That’s great that you are interested in the topic and GrapheneOS. I’m was nervous at first but I’m almost 3 years into it using GOS and will probably never go back to iOS as long as GOS is still around. On stock Android, you can download fdroid, droidify, obtanium, etc., from your browser, install those app stores, then use those app stores to download apps without using the Play Store or being signed in to Google. Unfortunately, Google will still be running on the device, but you can still use privacy respecting apps!
Fantastic video -- i have a question or two for clarification. I can see you have the "Facebook family" of apps in one of the profiles. How do you go about installing those, and are notifications from those apps available to you regardless of what profile you're in? So for e.g., if you're in your main privacy focused profile, do you still get push notifications for, say, FB Messenger messages when it's installed in the "social" profile you set up? And I guess I would ask that same question of WhatsApp too (though I don't think you have that installed). If I want to ensure I get WhatsApp push notifications at all times, regardless of what profile I'm in, is it possible to do this? Or do I have to switch to the profile that the app is installed in?
Thanks!! There is a setting where you can get notifications from different profiles sent to the profile you are working in. However, I haven't tried it as I like to not have notifications personally. Rather than notifications getting pushed to me, I go in and check everything manually. Keeps me from getting distracted, but I know that might not work for everyone. Sorry I couldnt answer this one but hopefully someone else can chime in!
Is it true that there is no Adaptive Charging on GrapheneOS? Therefore the battery should be on 100% over hours during sleep, which would decrease battery health quicker than necessary. Oddly enough I only seem to be able to find scattershot evidence of others having the same problem. Not sure if it had to do with my model, if people are just fibbing, or what. Here’s a good interview for why GrapheneOS chooses Google Pixel devices. th-cam.com/video/WkQ_OCzuLNg/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared I trust GrapheneOS and if they chose pixel devices, then I’m okay with their judgement. As an average user, it’s way above my understanding and I have to trust these projects. It’s way better than using iPhone or Stock Android imo 😀
Keepass is completely offline, and I wanted to try to manage my own password database. I've been doing it for about 6 months now and have been enjoying the process. But that's about it, I absolutely love bitwarden and still trust it. I believe you can self host bitwarden too, but never tried it. Keepass is just very easy, so no need to try something else.
Is it possible to buy an unlocked google pixel phone and install graphene os myself, or is it better to buy one that comes all set-up? I mean, I know it's possible to install it myself, but will it work just as good as this one?
It’s always best to install it yourself imo. Having someone else or another company do it for you, you would be putting trust that they did not mess with the OS.
I think the Pixel 6 is a good value right now. You can find an unlocked refurb unit on Amazon for low $200s. I currently use a Pixel 5, but Security Updates/Support is ending October of this year.
Hi I wonder how to install GrapheneOS on Android phones like, Samsung, Xiaomi, etc? Is it compatible? I am very keen to install GrapheneOS onto my Xiaomi 11T pro! Thanks
those phones doesn't have various developer tools that pixel has. Mainly the ability to relock the boot loader. Pixel also gets faster security updates from Google. no privacy without security
It is a fork of the Andoid OS. Android is an open source project that is not run by Google. Google installs their particular version of Android which requires their google services background app to run many of their apps, but the phone hardware itself interfaces with the open source Android platform.
you are not in control of your data (passwords) if you write it down all in one place. just think a password generating technique unique to you based on the websites you use and youll never need a pass manager software ever again
Nice, kudos to you if your using that method! I tried and just couldn’t keep up with Special Character requirements each service. Like if one service doesn’t allow the special character combination that I normally use. Then I had to remember which sites needed different special characters. So didn’t work for me, but awesome if you’ve found a good method!
Why not combine a password manager and then always prepend a prefix that only you know and that is unique to the website? Or combine passwords from two different PW managers?
Pixel 5 security support will be ending soon. I'd recommend getting Pixel 6 to have security patches for next several years. Right now used ones are good value.
Push notifications does not work for me. You have to use the “pull” method where you open the app whenever you want to fetch new mail. I have learned to live with this and actually prefer it now since I’m not bombarded and distracted by each notification. However, this might be a deal breaker for some. Even with GSF, notifications does not work for me.
I JUST LOST A YEAR OF IMPORTANT PHOTOS!!! BACKUP FIRST!!! I guess I only have myself to blame really; but I watched 5+ long videos about GrapheneOS and installation walkthroughs, and I guess I still somehow just missed the memo to make sure your phone is COMPLETELY BACKED UP (PHOTOS, files, anything that you would lose if you could push one “wipe phone” button on your phone). Do not do a single step of installing GrapheneOS, before making sure you haven’t forgotten to backup EVERYTHING. RIP Dad, RIP Lily, RIP Patches; a year of saving things through pictures and screenshots gone, a year of a lot of photos of myself that now, I just won’t have a year of my life to be able to reference or look back at; just a year that I’ll pretend I was blackout drunk literally every day, because I literally have no other way of verifying that that year even happened tbh. Poof. RIP me
Sorry to hear that. Unlocking the bootloader erases user data on the device. Something that the GrapheneOS documentation is thorough about, and any respectable 3rd party installation walkthrough.
There’s no logging in twice on this OS 😀. Phone does not have any telemetry sent to Google from what I have seen by monitoring all requests using NextDNS. Anyone can look at the code and build this OS by themselves if they wanted to, so for me I feel very safe using this OS. However, to each their own, there are other ROMs to choose from! Even if I wanted to use Google services, I would still use GrapheneOS with Google Play Services installed and use the phone that way. The Google apps will not have privileged access like on stock OS, and you can use the many privacy/security enhancements of GrapheneOS.

what is the name of the foundation?
Bromite is dead and actually vulnerable now. I switched to "mull" (on f droid)
Can you share the vulnerability details and maybe a link to a report? I do see that the app was not updated since Dec 2022, so I'm truly interested to learn more. Thanks!!
Ah, yes I see that now. Thanks for the heads up!
Good content a lot of information, keep up the work. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Unless we can create private apps and get the whole world to switch platforms i dont understand whats the point? you basically have a super private calls, txts, and email, i guess internet too but might as well just use a nokia brick or older phones that dont have the trackable hardware or use burners and disconnects everything manually? And then graphene only runs on google devices which i find odd, like u dont think google built in backdoors to their stuff idk it is all a bit above my head so im trying to learn more. Just seems to me in this day and age if a govn. LVl type agency wants to find and get into your stuff...they can.
I would Love to have a Graphene OS for desktop, like windows or linux based, or even android as long as it works well with desktop like a chromebook
Do you play any games on your phone?
I don't think he does💀
Mr. Privacy, can u tell me, why would GrapheneOS Trust the HARDWARE of google? do u know for a fact, that the hardware is not "tracking/spying" on u?
long ago i saw even the cpu chip makers put some "backdoors" into their chips..
i dno man, feels littlebit strange..
Here’s a good interview for why GrapheneOS chooses Google Pixel devices. th-cam.com/video/WkQ_OCzuLNg/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
I trust GrapheneOS and if they chose pixel devices, then I’m okay with their judgement. As an average user, it’s way above my understanding and I have to trust these projects. It’s way better than using iPhone or Stock Android imo 😀
Love Graphene, faster, and supposedly the sandbox prevents google services from sending their tracking info to their urls, or maybe I misread.
I have a Pixel 7 w/GrapheneOS installed. Is there a tracker such as Samsung Smart tag that is compatable ?
why do you want samsung to track you if you care about privacy
lmaoo
Theft recovery
Have u noticed a decrease in the amount of schooling you do on social media since switching ?
I am on social media way less....but to be honest, now spend more time on NewPipe. At least I'm learning haha :)
i have two samsung 2/16 phones from 2016 - can i put it there?
are you still using your graphene OS?
Yup, been on GrapheneOS for 2 years now! Still using it as my primary device.
I have at&t prepaid. Would I be okay if I installed this or does it even matter?
hey) what case you use in this vid? thx
Does GrapheneOS vanadium or lineageOS only works with certain phone models, or any models including Samsung S23 ultra?
GrapheneOS is only supported on Google Pixel phones. I'm not sure about lineageOS.
why did you drop bitwarden?
Keepass is completely offline, and I wanted to try to manage my own password database. I've been doing it for about 6 months now and have been enjoying the process. But that's about it, I absolutely love bitwarden and still trust it. I believe you can self host bitwarden too, but never tried it. Keepass is just very easy, so no need to try something else.
how can change font in graphenos ?
Is it possible to buy an unlocked google pixel phone and install graphene os myself, or is it better to buy one that comes all set-up?
I mean, I know it's possible to install it myself, but will it work just as good as this one?
It’s always best to install it yourself imo. Having someone else or another company do it for you, you would be putting trust that they did not mess with the OS.
What version of pixel would you recommend and say is the the best for grapheneOS?
I think the Pixel 6 is a good value right now. You can find an unlocked refurb unit on Amazon for low $200s. I currently use a Pixel 5, but Security Updates/Support is ending October of this year.
@@ThePrivacyWayfinder yea Im probably go with 6a cus the updates and support will last up till 2027.. Thanks for a quick reply mate
What apps does it come with for texting?
Can I use crypto ledger app in this OS ?
I hope you have the keys to that wallet. If not, it’s pure cringe.
Do you trust proton? if yes why?
Hi
I wonder how to install GrapheneOS on Android phones like, Samsung, Xiaomi, etc? Is it compatible?
I am very keen to install GrapheneOS onto my Xiaomi 11T pro!
Thanks
those phones doesn't have various developer tools that pixel has. Mainly the ability to relock the boot loader. Pixel also gets faster security updates from Google.
no privacy without security
Does organic maps need a SIM card to work? It doesn't seem to find me with Wifi only (Airplane mode on)
you may have turned off network permissions too early, you need to download maps first then feel free to turn them off
May I ask, is it possible to run Kali Linux kernel with grapheme os?
No, maybe if you can dual boot somehow
this does not sit on top of the pixel android os does it? this is a true os replacement.?
It is a fork of the Andoid OS.
Android is an open source project that is not run by Google.
Google installs their particular version of Android which requires their google services background app to run many of their apps, but the phone hardware itself interfaces with the open source Android platform.
@@dialecticalmonist3405 Thank you!
Ya may wanna reconsider Proton apps...
Why?
brother i have a question can i install it on my redme note 9 pro devices
No, just on Google Pixel devices.
google is sandboxed i use whatever, you control permissions
you are not in control of your data (passwords) if you write it down all in one place.
just think a password generating technique unique to you based on the websites you use and youll never need a pass manager software ever again
@@bryce-bryce good idea
You drive a Tesla, your phone doesn't spy on you but your car does.
But you don't carry your car everywhere with you
Do you still recommend getting the Pixel 5 for Graphene OS?
Pixel 5 security support will be ending soon. I'd recommend getting Pixel 6 to have security patches for next several years. Right now used ones are good value.
@@ThePrivacyWayfinder Aha, thanks for ur response!
Anyone know if Grapheneos on Pixel 6a will work with Metro by Tmobile?
service company doesn't matter
Good Video
curious but does your protonmail's notification work since you do not have gsf installed?
Push notifications does not work for me. You have to use the “pull” method where you open the app whenever you want to fetch new mail. I have learned to live with this and actually prefer it now since I’m not bombarded and distracted by each notification. However, this might be a deal breaker for some. Even with GSF, notifications does not work for me.
@@ThePrivacyWayfinder configured it and it works with play store downloaded!
*can use whatsapp or TH-cam?*
Phone starts with Google logo and you have to log in twice. To me that's concerning.
@@ThePrivacyWayfinder Thanks for the feedback, but why does the SIM pin need to be entered twice c. 1min on the video.. I am seriously looking to install GrapheneOS. The spyware is getting overwhelming.
