    Just so everybody knows, Filmic Pro app now cost $2.99 per week, yes I said week. That is $156 per year subscription. In four years that is $624 for a frinkin phone App. I don't care how good this app is, it isn't worth that.

    Mavis seems to be the most polished in the way of feeling like a cinema camera, thought the menus are certainly clunky. It sure does have great frame/bitrate options and exposure tools.

    I've been using Mavis for a few years now. One of the features it has that others don't, like FiLMiC and BeastCam, is that you can lock your shutter and leave the ISO on auto. I find this great for when I'm out with the kids at the park or doing something like a vlog. I can set my shutter and then let the ISO bounce around if I happen to walk into a shadow for a moment.

    • @Agui86
      @Agui86 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have issues locking the shutter that I want. If I move the shutter to lets say 1/50 it will move me to either 30 or 40 automatically, even though I'm in M. Or even trying to lock in 1/48 it won't let me. If that part was fully manual without the app moving iso and shutter together then I would love this app more.

    • @LaithGraham
      @LaithGraham ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Agui86 If I understand correctly I had that issue with an older version on the iPhone 6 Plus. The current version on my iPhone 11 Pro Max is great.

    Amazing review! It's great that you jump into each app, and provide their pros and cons, without the fluff. I've been using Filmic Pro and the Moment app for about a half a year now, so I appreciate the comparisons in your video if I ever want to jump ship.

    Thoughts on the new subscription model for Filmic? It also appears Movie Pro is still the only alternative for an app with remote control. That's the deal breaker for me.

    Thanks for the great info. Subscribed and looking forward to your other videos. One additional thing I was hoping to see in your comparison was information about HDR capture. There is some variance among those apps. For example Filmic Pro only seems to support HDR at 4K up to 30FPS while others like ProCam 8 support HDR at 4K up to 60FPS.

  • @dexstrumental

    One major flaw you missed here. The Mavis app is the only one out of all of them that you can Bluetooth timecode with the UltraSync Blue. Wish that wasn’t the case but it seems to be in January 2022. That’s why I purchased the Mavis app so I can be synced to the Blue with my Zoom F6 audio recorder and other Bluetooth timecode devices. It’s a big deal if you happen to be a musician or plan on using it in multi cam setups.

    Thanks a lot for those reviews, it helps a lot!
    However, I find myself using Mavis and Filmic Pro, and Mavis even more than Filmic Pro. But this is just personal preference, I am just used to it.
    Let me just point out that Mavis is the only one of those apps that has timecode syncing support with Ultrasync Blue. Occasionally I set up my audio recorder with some mics and while recording with the iPhone, video and audio are recorded in sync. Sure, this is a special setup, but worth a mention.
    I guess I will try another app based on your review, so thanks a lot.

I’ve tried (poorly) to do some of the same with my science videos for my students. Are you filming in front of just a green screen (I think it looks like that) or are you using your normal garage teal wood background and keying that out? I’ve love to see a behind the scenes video of this videos, and others.

    Hey Stewart, amazing video, have you encountered fps issues with beastcam?
    Also, I'm needing to choose one app to purchase for some serious filming and beastcam ticks all the boxes. I never tried Filmic pro but I feel I would value locking settings and level in the ui, which Filmic pro seems to fail at. Lastly I'm on the fence regarding the log curve features in Filmic pro, that I would miss in Beastcam. Please note i'd like to do some minimal coloring in Resolve in order to loose the video look and gain the less contrasty filmic look.
    Pls let me know, thanks! Luca

    Hey! Great comp video, and handy chart as well! One thing I noticed as a chart omission: no comparison of which apps allow for "vertical shooting" - or the ability of the interface to flip vertically if shooting for IG/FB stories or Reels/IG-TV? I know that Filmic Pro does ( you demo that in this video). Also, do you know if any of these apps allow overlays while shooting vertically? such as 4:3 and such? Thanks for all the time spent on this info either way!

    • @anchoragedj
      @anchoragedj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m wondering the same. I enjoyed your video but with no ‘final product’ comparison, I feel like you left the most important piece out!!
      I understand functionality, ease of use and value but I’d also argue that once used to ANY app, ease of use and value are out the window. And the reason one becomes so familiar is because it includes or is available in post to rectify functionality.
      Just my $.02 but Mavis with a 19? Ouch, and as you so often mention, it’s the One app that shows the shooter everything at a glance.
      From ISO - shutter, frame rates to resolution to audio levels, even scopes! All there at a glance.
      Don’t get me wrong - Filmic Pro’s an excellent app and one of the most used in my arsenal as well but I lean on Mavis and have taken to ProTake as well
      …which kind of confused me when you wrap up you mentioned that ProMovie may be a good choice for the beginner, and nothing about ProTake - which you seemingly enjoyed per your review. Yet ProMovie didn’t seem as well received during your intro of the app(s)
      …sorry Bill, didn’t mean to write a novel here but TL/DR
      I agree with Bill - maybe when you do 2022, add to your reviews the ‘video quality’ as one of your comparisons. Maybe audio capture as well, as we all know how important audio is to video.
      Video quality and Audio quality please?!?
      You’re awesome!!

For a while now it's been possible to artificially simulate the blurry background in smartphone photography but it's a relatively new development in video modes. It's not perfect yet but as and when it gets better smartphones will continue to erode the reasons for many to pay up for a traditional camera.

    Android has the advantage now by the way, the app mcpro24fps completely eliminated oversharpening, introduced some really useful log modes like HLG, raised the bitrate up to 500 MBytes per sec (as a matter of fact it is a little bit of a cheating, because if the system has reached its maximum, it won't go further, but, fortunately, the app indicates it by turning the bitrate icon to red). But, still, you can make 6K video with 240 Mbytes per sec using a Xiaomi Mi10T Pro, which is around 250 USD used. Oh, and last but not least: Motion Cam wiped the floor with Apple Prores, because it can shoot RAW DNG video. And IT WORKS.
    So Android is the winner now, but I have to admit, I have NEVER EVER shot footage which looked like completely identical to what I have seen with my own eyes until I tried the iPhone 13 series, and I have used GH5, Sony A7III etc. iPhone rocks 13. Still blows my mind. And you can buy the cheapest, It will be as good as the most advanced Pro Max. I tried 13 Pro Max, 13 and Mini. I even find the regular 13 main sensor less noisy.

    Thanks for the effort you put into it. It might have been mentioned before, there is another promising app called "mcpro24fps".

    Hi if I shoot 30p or 60p in the UK with my DSLR to match my phones 30p Im reading that I should still set my DSLR camera to either 50 or 100 frames per second to mitigate potential artificial light flickering. Does this make sense to you.

      Yes it does make sense...
      50fps is the Pal system(UK, Europe, Africa)
      60fps is the NTSC system (us)
      It matches the power frequency used. Which in the states is 60hz.
      In UK is 50hz.

      @@vincentodero3143 Ive since found that final cut has a frames reframer that takes 30fps files and matches to a 25fps timeline. It works great I get smooth playback of my 30fps phone clips on my 25fps timelines.

    Great video! Tons of information. Do you know if any of your tops picks (FilmicPro, MoviePro, BeastCam, ProMovie or Protake) can do a 4:5 aspect ratio (1080 x 1350) for Instagram videos?
