Thank you for the lesson in book binding. My leather (?) binding on my bible has separated, and I needed some instruction on how to fix. Great to hear your child in the background. Trust me, treasure your family everyday, cause we grow old too fast and the children of our youth grow right along too. Edited comment - I just watched this again after over a year and after making my own book repairs. I see now that he is saving the hollow space between the text block and the cover and is just glueing the spine reinforcement back to the text block. So I had to edit my comment. There are many ways to repair this to be stronger though. Sad I didn't see if he replaced the map endpaper.

I needed this I took two Bibles from my grandpa‘s room since he passed away and he told me to pray. From there some thing has been telling me to read the Bible so I started with John. But boy, let me tell you, the second book he has with all the books is heavy!😂😂🤣🤣 I needed to fix thatI think it’s even older than me
I put a piece of double sided masking tape on the back of the text block to hold the cover on. Added scotch tape on the pages that sroarated. After a couple of years it still works. Not fancy but functional. Ok for cheap bookd.

My book is about twice the thickness but broken into about 6 segments so I assume i'll need to add some material like a gause type fabric that will keep each segmented block together before glueing that to the spine cover

He has World apparently he purchased at a promise Keepers meeting years ago and he loves it but it's getting kind of raggedy I just came across one so I'm going to make him a hardback copy. Covered with leather ribbons in it and so on. But I want to want to Gild the edges. I would like to find some heat transfer gilding to do the job with I however do not know who that you would and was wondering if you could give me a suggestion. I don't want to join use the glue on stuff so any help that you can give as to where I can buy with sperm would be greatly appreciated.
No. You need an acid free glue that will dry clear. PVA glue will dry flexible, which is what you want. Elmers glue will crack and won’t hold the book at all. It will also damage the paper
The ribbons are used as bookmarks. I have many bibles and all of them have between 1-3 ribbons for each bible. It’s pretty standard for bibles today to have these ribbons. However, in theory, if you were going to perform this book repair on a normal book you could probably add ribbons to it to use as bookmarks. Just a thought.
Definitely a PVA glue because it is a "cold-flex" glue. You could use white Elmer's glue, which is a common PVA glue and not necessarily have to buy "bookbinding glue" specifically. Tacky Glue or Super Glue will harden and it will also become brittle. I would not use it on a binding

Please do not glue the text block to the cover as it will ruin your book. The hollow is an important part of the binding structure.

Then why are some books made that way.Some heay boots fail in support from weaks side " hinge" pages
Using rubberbands on the outside will help the book binding glue to adhere better.

This is not the way you should not glue the whole book of text to the book cover... Do not do this...you will not be able to turn the pages.

I've used Elmer's glue for this type of repair. It is a pva glue. My oldest project was 6 years ago, no problems with the Elmer's glue holding up

You should not glue the spine. You should use end sheets and cheese cloth for the binding.
