The biggest takeaway here, is that there is no "best answer" that works in every case, or sometimes even in more than one case. You just have to keep trying and developing tricks to speed things up. I heard the phrase a long time ago, and have always lived by it when trying new things; First you get good, then you get fast.
That's amazingly a lot like writing a complex computer program. You can have an idea of how to do it, start it, realize you need to start over, do it two or three times, and then you have an idea of even the vaguest idea of how to organize the program.
