Considering the amount of work it takes to set up shots, with camera positions, lighting, and placements of production crew and their equipment, I find this anecdote highly dubious.
@@Bisqwit they didn't change lighting for every shot, the set is set up with overhead lighting and such so that much of the set is well lit. Even then, he isnt as well lit over there, the pan isn't very smooth and rikers immediate reaction and camera stare seem to support the anecdote. The insert shot added in later.
That silence made the entire scene, but IIRC it was improvised. The script didn't call for him to take a walk to the plaque, but Stewart felt it added a lot to the scene so everyone played along.
I remember when this episode came out. It was in later 1989, I was 17 years old and a senior in high school. Amazing to me that 31 years have passed just like that.

@@hagamapama I would argue that the advocate overplayed his hand and went completely out of line. No real court or hearing would allow an advocate to just get going like that Vulcan judge did. In reality he would have been held in contempt.
I do not know... When that Farangi kidnapped Riker, Troi and her mom...... Picard did play a good badass time of "Give me my folks back or I will blow you up then gets to quote poems to Troi's mom.... I found it even more funny with how Picard would find some reason to lock him self away when Troi's mom came to visit like when the crew wanted him to take a brake and go to Rissa, then Deana like "oh by the way my mom will be here...."

These are the moments where Worf joyfully (and thus most effectively) learns new skills, tactics, strategies for various types of combat and gains further respect for Picard.
See now I see the Klingons forming 2 castes the physical caste which specialize in armed combat and space warfare and the administrative caste who wage war with bureaucracy, regulations, and sassy passive aggressiveness. Each caste unsurpassed in their respective forms of combat.
@@kyubbiman2255 The key theme is using your enemy's weapons against them. It is like the analogue in diplomacy (this case) where you have to speak the other party's language in order to be understood, i.e. opening to different ways, opening the mind, nourishes interactive skills. Hardened fronts bashing against each other is the dumbest beginner stuff and won't accomplish any benefit long-term.
No lens flares. No phaser gunfights. No giant space battles. No giant cut-and-paste CGI fleets. No insubordination by a random lieutenant who thinks she knows better than Picard and is willing to pull a phaser to prove it. Just acting, tight plotting, and a sense of humour which allows everyone not to take themselves too seriously.
one day star trek will be back. it may be 10 years from now or it could be 20 but it will be back. just have to wait for some quality writers and a license holder who realises not everyone has the intellectual capacity of an apricot

His most badass moment was in 'Defector', in his dialogue with Tomalok: Tomalok: "...consider the men and women you would lead into a lost cause." Picard: "If the cause is just and honorable, they are prepared to give their lives. Are you prepared to die today, Tomalok?" Tomalok: "Pff. I expected more from you than an idle threat, Picard." Picard: "Then you shall have it. Mr. Worf..." Worf: "Aye, sir." /Activates communications signal /Klingon battle cruisers decloak around Romulan vessels. Worf: "Klingon battle cruisers, armed and ready, sir." /Tomalok look of surprise and desperation Picard: "What will it be, Tomalok?" Tomalok: "You will still not survive our assault!" Picard: "And you will not survive ours. Shall we die together?" /Klingons, monitoring the communications channels, laughing their collective rears off in delightful anticipation of glorious battle, probably Tomalok, nodding respectfully: "I look forward to our next meeting, Captain." Romulan warbirds power down weapons, cloak and leave... /Klingons ROFL again at Romulan cowardice, probably...
My all time funniest ST:TNG scenes is the Robin Hood inspired episode and Worf saying, "I protest. I'm not a merry man!" That will always, always crack me up until the end of time 😂.
When Picard is doing his 'inspection tour', I love how Troi looks concerned, but Riker is loving it. (Although...Troi should have an even bigger smile because she can sense the Captain's amusement).
Amusement? Doubtful, that would cone with retrospect. He is likely feeling annoyance, frustration, determination, and possibly a bit of doubt. At the hail, he would be feeling intense satisfaction coupled with a bit of (deservedly) petty vindictiveness.
@@wstavis3135 Incorrect IMHO, Picard knows he's won when he is making them wait. So he is feeling amusement, satisfaction, a sense of 'don't *uck with me' attitude. And Riker knows it (Troi should too....she should be smiling like Riker).
Funny how so serious a moment can be so amusing. That subtle smirk on Picard's face when he was walking towards the viewscreen, that sort of thing you only get out of a great actor that knows what's going through the layers of his character's mind. For Sir Patrick, the moment was doing a take from a script, which in of itself is dry and serious, but he was portraying a character that was experiencing a moment of victory _while_ portraying an air of authority that was dry and serious. For stuff like that, I imagine an actor just discards real life and lives the moment.

There's some other bits in there where the writers are clearly giving a nod to the keen-eyed as a "yeah yeah, we knew you trekkies would get up close like this, here's your medal" if you look close at the parts which don't get highlighted.
This is kind of like the rubber ducky room and the porsch on the MSD. When the show was made, there is no way the audience would have been able to make out those details. Of course 30 years of progress means that everybody can look at each frame in minute detail and can pick out all those Easter eggs.
This sums up an important part of what makes for a great starship captain in the UFP Starfleet. A well-rounded knowledge base that can be drawn upon to deal with almost any situation. You never know when any bit of trivia might come in handy. The Grizzellas' sleep cycle, the story of Gilgamesh, Shakespeare, alien nesting dolls, etc. Nothing ever learned is ever wasted.
It's one of those useful words which wraps up several meanings and a long explanation into a single, short utterance. 😄 All at the same time, it says "this agreement is no longer in effect and we could soon be in a shooting war if that's really what you want, but there's a chance to reinstate the agreement if you'll only be sensible." The Sheliak decided to be sensible, although with bad grace. 😆
Pause and read the blue text, its quite entertaining, and you might just learn something. TNG, in my opinion, was just the best of the iterations of the franchise. Thank you Gene Roddenberry for igniting my imagination so many years ago when Star Trek first aired on television.
Pretty sure this is my favorite scene in all of TNG. Just owning them on their own method of besting them over the head with the treaty and then the power move of making them wait to take their call. Just, *chef's kiss* mwah beautiful. "You enjoyed that." "YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT!" Good stuff there.
I love at 1:00 you can see Riker smiling in the background as he's already figured out what Picard is doing and can't contain his glee. He's just like, "Oh Picard....you got em!" Little details like this that made the show great.
Picard: "Then I declare this treaty in abeyance" _(cuts off communication)_ Shelliac Captain: _(furiously pouring over treaty text)_ "There has to be something here.... damn. Hail them back." Shelliac communication officer: "They aren't responding, sir" Shelliac Captain: _(wincing and facepalming)_ "Just, keep hailing..."

Just noticed that during Stewart's little improv maneuver, Michael Dorn was doing his level best to not break out laughing. He kept it down to a smirk and a mild waver in the "Sir?!" line. Whether this is real or imagined, I blame exposure to bloopers. xD

I once worked with a professional futurist who pointed out that a prediction of 10 years is over-optimistic and 50 years is over-pessimistic. I'd like to think that by this time, they'd reached at least an algorithm that works even if nobody knows why (like inc software multiplying how long you think it _should_ take by pi).

I'd like to think that if Picard chose Q to act as a third-party arbitrator that the entity would appear at once on either one of their bridges in his judge garb.

He probably wasn't one of the listed arbitrators. Besides, if he ruled in Picard's favour and made the Sheliak disappear with a snap of his fingers, then Picard would have owed him one, and Picard would never accept that. He wouldn't ask Q for favours. Good thing too, otherwise the series would have become a bit predictable...
Bit of an easter egg in this episode, if you pause at the text analysis you might notice that text of the document is actually a random assortment of paragraphs. Within that jumble of not-legalese, there's: A paragraph noting how ridiculous this document actually is. Multiple references to anime. A paragraph noting how ridiculous this document actually is. More anime references. Multiple anime title drops. An official-looking paragraph that outlines face-to-face negotiation procedures. This paragraph is actually written somewhat casually, using terms such as "screwy".

brilliant, brilliant scene from a very underrated episode. i remember seeing this on first-run and laughing out loud, how picard was totally f'ing with the sheliak, checking for dust on the dedication plaque, etc. "you're damn right." one of the best S3 episodes IMO.
I love Riker failing to keep a straight face one he realises what Picard is up to. The longer the scene goes on, the harder it is for him to keep a straight face.

Who says it was as improv? The cameraman seem to fully expect it and didn't lose Picard from center frame at all.

See now I see the Klingons forming 2 castes the physical caste which specialize in armed combat and space warfare and the administrative caste who wage war with bureaucracy, regulations, and sassy passive aggressiveness. Each caste unsurpassed in their respective forms of combat.

It is like the analogue in diplomacy (this case) where you have to speak the other party's language in order to be understood, i.e. opening to different ways, opening the mind, nourishes interactive skills. Hardened fronts bashing against each other is the dumbest beginner stuff and won't accomplish any benefit long-term.

They did it better: they joined Federation and started to use Humans and Vulcans for this.
No lens flares. No phaser gunfights. No giant space battles. No giant cut-and-paste CGI fleets. No insubordination by a random lieutenant who thinks she knows better than Picard and is willing to pull a phaser to prove it. Just acting, tight plotting, and a sense of humour which allows everyone not to take themselves too seriously.

When Picard is doing his 'inspection tour', I love how Troi looks concerned, but Riker is loving it. (Although...Troi should have an even bigger smile because she can sense the Captain's amusement).
Amusement? Doubtful, that would cone with retrospect. He is likely feeling annoyance, frustration, determination, and possibly a bit of doubt. At the hail, he would be feeling intense satisfaction coupled with a bit of (deservedly) petty vindictiveness.
@@wstavis3135 Incorrect IMHO, Picard knows he's won when he is making them wait. So he is feeling amusement, satisfaction, a sense of 'don't *uck with me' attitude. And Riker knows it (Troi should too....she should be smiling like Riker).
Both are more cause the improvisation of Picard.

Funny how so serious a moment can be so amusing. That subtle smirk on Picard's face when he was walking towards the viewscreen, that sort of thing you only get out of a great actor that knows what's going through the layers of his character's mind. For Sir Patrick, the moment was doing a take from a script, which in of itself is dry and serious, but he was portraying a character that was experiencing a moment of victory _while_ portraying an air of authority that was dry and serious. For stuff like that, I imagine an actor just discards real life and lives the moment.

There's some other bits in there where the writers are clearly giving a nod to the keen-eyed as a "yeah yeah, we knew you trekkies would get up close like this, here's your medal" if you look close at the parts which don't get highlighted.
This is kind of like the rubber ducky room and the porsch on the MSD. When the show was made, there is no way the audience would have been able to make out those details. Of course 30 years of progress means that everybody can look at each frame in minute detail and can pick out all those Easter eggs.

It's one of those useful words which wraps up several meanings and a long explanation into a single, short utterance. 😄 All at the same time, it says "this agreement is no longer in effect and we could soon be in a shooting war if that's really what you want, but there's a chance to reinstate the agreement if you'll only be sensible." The Sheliak decided to be sensible, although with bad grace. 😆

Pause and read the blue text, its quite entertaining, and you might just learn something. TNG, in my opinion, was just the best of the iterations of the franchise. Thank you Gene Roddenberry for igniting my imagination so many years ago when Star Trek first aired on television.

Pretty sure this is my favorite scene in all of TNG. Just owning them on their own method of besting them over the head with the treaty and then the power move of making them wait to take their call. Just, *chef's kiss* mwah beautiful. "You enjoyed that." "YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT!" Good stuff there.
I love at 1:00 you can see Riker smiling in the background as he's already figured out what Picard is doing and can't contain his glee. He's just like, "Oh Picard....you got em!" Little details like this that made the show great.
Not to mention Troi’s own amused smile at the same moment.

It is not the only time he gives this signal to mean "interrupt or stop". I guess the first Academy class is about not mistaking this signal for "shoot to kill the enemy".

brilliant, brilliant scene from a very underrated episode. i remember seeing this on first-run and laughing out loud, how picard was totally f'ing with the sheliak, checking for dust on the dedication plaque, etc. "you're damn right." one of the best S3 episodes IMO.
I love Riker failing to keep a straight face one he realises what Picard is up to. The longer the scene goes on, the harder it is for him to keep a straight face.
Just rewatched this and this was just one great part of a great episode.
