Most soda is very corrosive and you can dissolve the outside of a can by putting it into a container with the soda (so the soda is touching the outside). It is unlikely that a can would last long enough to be shipped to a store, let alone make it to your fridge before the can dissolves enough to leak soda everywhere. The lack of metallic taste is just a great side effect.
yup it always does i even do it on purpose to prank my friends, it is the first time ever i see s.o tapping on the top haha, they should tap it all around the side, just about 6 7 flicks to release all the bubbles trapped on the surface of the sides.
Yes, the carbonation actually rests on the sides rather than the top. Which is why tapping the sides releases the carbonation, and the top does not work.
Yea I was thinking the same thing - tapping the top doesn't do diddly as the rim absorbs the energy. You gotta tap the side to create a resonant vibration to release the carbonation.
I think it was the pressure of the carbonation that held the shape in the original video. You can probably bend the tab up slightly without breaking the seal.
Right; the tapping is to break the ubbbles at the top so you can crack it slowly without the bubbles leaking out the air vent. If you just brute force the pressure release there' no difference... but without bubbles, you can crack it and let the pressure out slowly without it spurting.
Mountain Dew has a lighter carbonation than most sodas. Try root beer. Much more dense carbonation. The tap test can make a difference, but you should tap the side of the can, not the tab.
Can you do stuff with “hot hands” (the hand warmers that warm up when you shake them) 1. Cut them open 2. Try to make your own 3. Put it in a microwave 4. Get it wet
Mythbusters did the soda tapping experiment and their result was that tapping the side releases much more carbonation than tapping the top and actually works as opposed to tapping the top of the can
Maybe, but what really makes the tapping work is the time you're taking to do the tapping just gives the CO2 time to settle. So yeah, you don't really need to do the tapping. You just need to not be so impatient to guzzle your can of diabetes. The impromptu test they do in this video shows it.
Hey Nate whenever I have a shaken soda, I flick the sides and it works perfectly. It’s because it gets all the bubbles off the sides and at the top of the can instead of just tapping the top
I know! I have the three Fanta cans, one Diet Coke, one diet root beer, and the Fanta can I am currently drinking all on my head board. Those are all from the past 48 hours....
For the tap test, you are supposed to tap the sides and the top, to release the air bubbles from the sides of the can, creating a much bigger difference. If you want to try this, take a soda can, shake it up a little, then tap the sides and the top to get the results they were hoping for :) Hope this helped!

If you hit the can on the side or the top the soda will get shaken up a bit, which can lead to a higher risk of the soda erupting if you are not careful.
When you shake the soda, what happens is that the carbonation within the liquid loosens up, and the rapid depressurization of the soda can causes a chain reaction which you observe it as a eruption. When you tap the top of the soda can it causes the loose carbonation to surface and prevents the chain reaction from occuring in the first place. The test as shown in the video wasnt very scientific

Yep. People usually tap the top (and I honestly think that doesn't do a thing) but I've always flicked the sides going around the whole can. I think I read it somewhere.
Incorrect also. Just tried it then with a pepsi can. Shook it like mad and then gave it a few hard taps (15-20) on the metal tab where you drink from. Then opened a bit slowly and didn't make a mess :P
you're not supposed to sand it that much, it's only to remove the logo since it's printed with a specific material that prevents it from dissolving. hydrochloric acid 5% m/m works way better than pipe cleaner.
cans have plastic linings? huh. today i learned... oh yeah the tapping is supposed to be on the sides, but try to keep the bottle/can still, or else u shake it up while tapping it which would be counterproductive.
The best way to do the "tapping" on the soda can is to tap the sides. What you're trying to do is release the bubbles attached to the side of the walls, because when those bubbles rush to the top they pull soda up with it. If you get the bubbles to the top they will just expand and pop harmlessly. Tapping the sides all around the can will make them release and float. Steve Spangler did a video on this showing the science and the effectiveness.

But that's from my experience
You flick the sides of the can, not the top. The carbonation bubbles stick to the sides
Apparently with the tapping thing, your supposed to tap the sides as the carbonation bubbles stick to the side, tapping the sides of the can relieve them and helps it be less explosive XD
