So bittersweet - on one hand this is AWESOME, on the other, this kind of music has almost zero support in the US these days, and it’s very sad

Definitely a highpoint in creative artistry in those days. Always kept you guessing at the changes.

Jazz fusion peaked, as far as record deals and tour support being there for these artists, around 1986, and ran on fumes into the early 90s

Saw Robert Fripp play the Virgin Megastore in 1988 and met Mitch Mitchell doing a signing for his book in 1989

Same sort of thing going on in London at times . Remember my mum going to Tower Records and seeing Barry Manilow ! Another time Prince Harry bunked off from the Palace and mum saw him in Tower Records on Piccadilly. We were in the every week getting everything we could , Branford Marsalis or Eric Gale , Art Pepper things like Living Legend , Earth Wind and Fire early lps like Where have the flowers gone ? This Electric band is outstanding

I worked Tower Records @Lincoln Center location. Twice once around 1985 and again in 1996 ..
Met many cool musicians there ./ As Far as you can throw Scientology ( down the toilet hopefully.) Begs the Question ...how did Chick get roped into that Cult ? What drugs was he on just how desperate was he ? We may never know the answers .

How did Patitucci, a devout Catholic, manage to handle the pressure of Chick's proselytizing? The mind wonders. Dave Weckl? Lenny White? Did Chick only pick on guitarists? Btw, I remember when both Berne and Zorn worked at Tower downtown. At the time, I was not aware of how important each would become to the downtown scene. Two musicians I met in the 90s there - Duane Eubanks and Jorge Sylvester - were starting to make names for themselves.

I remember seeing Berne at Tower but didn't see Zorn there. Also used to see Melvin Gibbs.

I also saw a DiMeola interview where he said Chick broke up RTF because he was mad at Clarke for quitting scientology, so I guess it wasn't only guitarists. This talk about it reminds me of Zappa's hilarious spoof on Joe's Garage Pts. II and III of Appliantology led by L Ron Hoover. 😂

@@StephenBuckingham Zorn was the one who convinced Berne to work there with him.

@@StephenBuckingham LOL. Clarke left in the early 80s, so Di Meola must've been referencing the reunion. I've heard an interview with Di Meola where he said he left the first time around because of the pressure Chick was putting on him to take courses. Remember - Al was but a teenager back then. So Chick may have seen him as an easy mark. Clarke has since re-joined Sci-Fi-entology. That's why you saw the partnership between him and Chick pick up again in the 2000s. I know all this because I was part of Tony Ortega's anti-scientology cult for a time after seeing the HBO expose called Going Clear, which literally caused my jaw to drop.

I saw an interview with Scott recently where he said that when he was on the double bill tour with Chick' and Wayne Shorter,he hated being with Chick so much that he actually traveled on Wayne's bus where he could hang out with Wayne and Gary Willis.
