It's always a treat to hear Elektric Band live concerts from the early years especially the ones featuring the lineup of Corea, Weckl, Patitucci and Henderson who sound absolutely on fire. What an amazing group of fantastic players. RIP Chick
Henderson was the 3rd and final guitarist that Chick lost because of his odd devotion to L Ron. Given all that we know about the destructive cult today, I have a hard time reconciling my absolute love of Corea as one of the most important bridges (the others being Jarrett, Hancock and Tyner) from Evans to contemporary piano with his turning a blind eye to the irrevocable damage caused to thousands of people in part because of his financial support. Same for Clarke and Sheehan. Dig deep into why Sheehan's band was called Niacin, or why Chick's was called Return To Forever, producing tunes whose titles align with the old wacko's nonsensical space themes in relation to concepts of reincarnation. Even Chick's wife's activities amount to nothing more than "cult-jumping" (same as a certain Supreme Court Justice's wife). She went from the Sri Chinmoy cult while hooking up with Johnny Mac to scientology when she got together with Chick. This may sound like judgement of people who have severe mental illness, but I simply can't overlook the extent of the damage caused to other people.
As far as I know, Stanley Clarke already left the church after RTF disbanded fully in 79 (or perhaps that's what caused them to not have a followup to Musicmagic). If you extend your logic than basically nothing on this earth is permissable given that in one way or the other, you will always fund misery to some degree by means of existing, consumption, and paying taxes. You just turn a blind eye to it or are ignorant about it. The question is: what did Chick actually know? It is obvious he enjoyed privileges from Scientology. But what did he for example know about Sea org? The ship? etc. Was there a point where he maybe got "trapped" and couldn't really get out even if he wanted to? It is unsure to what extend Chick believed all the science fiction in Scientology and how much of it he considered to be metaphorical instead of literal to demonstrate philosophical concepts. His attitudes towards music and playing changed. Arguably he got something out of it and it helped him become the musician he was. There is a lot that's just unknown and probably will never come to surface. I find it fascinating, but I would not go as far as holding him personally accountable and responsible without knowing more details about his actions (apart from a general notion that he promoted scientology and obviously spend a lot of money on it). In a more direct sphere of influence, he also kick-started the careers of many great players including Di Meola, Weckl, Patitucci, Gambale, Marienthal, and others whom he took under his wing. He inspired many people to play, and nothing but positivity from many many many musicians after his passing.

If you read my initial post, you'll notice that I said that Chick lost 3 guitarists. What I didn't say directly was that he put varying pressure on each to join "The Church". If you watch the video of the mighty midget celebrating scamming the IRS to win tax exemption, you'll notice Chick jumping down and celebrating the "victory". Taxation is a zero sum game. If one doesn't pay taxes, the others make up for the loss in order to properly fund that which needs to be done. "Basically nothing on earth is permissable [sic]" because richy riches funding a destructive cult's existence is only as bad as a normal, law-abiding citizen paying his taxes (which, btw, he is required to do)? LMFAO. Please. Equating living, buying things and paying taxes to "funding misery" that cults cause is so ignorant, I don't even know where to begin. You can couch this any way you wish, but based on MY knowledge and fairly deep understanding of Scientology and how it operates, I feel I am totally justified in holding Chick and other celebrities (eg., Cruise, Travolta, Alley, et. al.) personally accountable for the thousands of lives ruined in that twisted and brainwashing fantasyland. Lastly, the only thing trapping Corea was the prison of his mind.
Ive always wondered what role scientology actually played in these musicians lives speculating that maybe it was the hip thing to do because the other cats were doing it.
