Call Centre Scams - Wham! Bam! - That's a SCAM # 2

  • Probably one of the most common types of scam at the time of publishing this video, Call Centre scams are all about hustling the victim into parting with cash by presenting some urgent fiction.
    This video is intended to be a very condensed summary of what this scam is, and how you should react.
    I think probably the very best (and most fun!) resources for learning more about these scams are the TH-cam channels of:
    Jim Browning - / @jimbrowning
    Kitboga - / @kitbogashow
    Scammer Payback - / @scammerpayback
    If that's too much fun for you, here are some other starting points:

    *FAQs and afterthoughts will appear in this comment* (Huge thanks to everyone who contributed to this addendum)
    *This Short Format* - I'm not about to stop doing any of the longer scam-related content, so don't worry about that.
    *Verifying The Call* - If you're worried the call may be true, DO NOT call back on any number given to you by the caller (look up the contact details yourself) and DO NOT call back on the same line you received the call (in some cases, it may still be silently connected to the scammer)
    *What happens if you press 1 and mess with the scammer?* - I'm not sure about this, but I think there are circumstances in which this could incur a premium rate charge for that part of the call. Probably varies by country and telco.
    *Caller Display* - Don't trust the number you may see on caller display - this is very easy for the scammer to spoof. Scammers may try to argue their legitimacy by telling you to check the caller display number against your bank website etc. Caller display is not reliable.

    The "payment in gift cards" part should be the most obvious tell to everyone.

    • @Carson_Neiss
      @Carson_Neiss 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      This type of scam doesn't always ask for gift cards. Sometimes they have you mail the money or make you go into your bank to make a transfer. Gift cards are a red flag but so is mailing money. When you go to the bank they often tell you to not tell the teller who you are sending the money to, such as "don't tell them you are sending it to Microsoft."

    • @mookinbabysealfurmittens
      @mookinbabysealfurmittens 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Gift cards are a common and major red flag, though. As is the fact that *SOCIAL SECURITY, THE POLICE, THE IRS, ETC. WILL NEVER CALL YOU!* They send a letter. Mix-up with taxes? Arrest warrant? Social services being discontinued? (Note: a social security number cannot be "withheld" or "cancelled"; not a thing) Anyway, those are _actual examples_ of things that you will be notified of via a *LETTER IN THE POST,* NOT a phone call.
      And antivirus companies won't call nor demand a call either; If a popup from your antivirus software says something like, "Warning! A virus has been detected, but your payment is overdue and you will not be protected against this virus unless you call this phone number!" This is not how antivirus softwares work, but the scam often does.

    I got a random call from the "Social Security Administration", a month or so ago, saying my SSN had been compromised and was linked to drug trafficking and money laundering in Texas. The police were going to be knocking on my door any minute and my SSN and all of my bank accounts were going to be suspended in 15 minutes. Oh my! I usually just block calls from numbers I don't recognize, unless they leave a legit message, but I already knew about this scam, so I decided to try playing along. The guy on the phone, who had a very heavy accent, but definitely not one from Texas, said he needed to confirm my identity before we could continue. I gave him a fake name - Mike Hunt and he said that checked out. He asked for the last 4 of my social, again fake - 0666 and he said that checked out. Birthdate, 4/20/62, again fake, but again apparently checked out. Fake street address, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, etc. Everything checked out and this guy was not getting any of the references. He went on to tell me the call was being "federally recorded", whatever that is and gave me his whole line of nonsense about an abandoned car in Texas, filled with drugs and weapons and how it and about 20 bank accounts were linked to my name and SSN and I was in big trouble if I didn't cooperate with him. Also, for some reason, I was not allowed to interrupt him when he was speaking and I couldn't tell anyone about this, not even my wife, lest I drag her into it as well. Also, I definitely didn't want to contact a lawyer, this guy was going to handle everything for me, as long as I stayed on the line and did everything he said. I managed to keep him on the phone for about an hour, interrupting him frequently, before he figured out he was being baited, got very angry and called me all kinds of what I assume were bad things, but he was using his native language, so I can't be sure. After that, he hung up on me. I probably won't make a habit of it, but it was kind of fun and he just had me on the phone and I was giving him all kinds of fake info to see if he really knew anything about me, so I wasn't worried abut anything being compromised for real. All the time I was keeping him from threatening someone else, who may have been more open to being scammed, I couldn't help but hope I would be making Atomic Shrimp proud.

    I get these kinds of calls very often about bank loans and mortgages that I have neither of. If someone is immediately trying to convince you that what they're talking about is SUPER URGENT, then they're probably trying to take advantage of that sudden sense of urgency and scam you.

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, I think the false sense of urgency has been a favourite psychological trick of scammers pretty much forever - even IRL scams like the guy who tries to sell you speakers from a white van, or the scams where someone asks you for change in the street.
      Learning that something isn't urgent just because someone else says so is a fundamental life skill, IMO; the trouble is, we kind of teach our children the opposite, with respect to instructions we are giving them.

    I was also thinking while I'm writing this to mention that I find your voice is very calming and I'm not sure if that is just for me or if others might feel the same. But I wonder if you might ever consider maybe like a three-part series where you either read something of your choice or talk about a topic of interest or something, because personally for me the topic wouldn't even matter it's more you being calm and just reading or chatting and setting the vibe to be relaxing. But then you could just do it into three sections so it's not like a super long video that way the general audience can still tap into and enjoy. Which in my case, I think it'd be awesome if you were just reading a book or heck I don't even know anything really is enough where I'm able to calm down and kind of tap into what you're talking about and calm my mind enough to sleep. okay maybe I'm a little tired and I'm babbling. but just was thinking about that. I get them all the time about BT.
      I live in Hull, the only place in the UK that BT doesn't have lines. They're not very bright aren't scammers, you'd think after countless calls to Hullensians they'd have realised that the 01482 prefix is a total no-no when trying to scam people with the BT phone bill scam.
      I admit, I get quite a kick out of leading them on for ages and getting them excited about me being an easy mark. It's crazy how angry they get when they click on it's them that's being played 😂 you wanna hear what they say about my sister when they start kicking off.
      Luckily, I don't have sister, much like I don't have BT.

    I commented on a previous video about those robocalls threatening mysterious legal action... but something else just came to mind:
    I live in an apartment, and sometimes someone will buzz, asking to be let into the building. They may say they've lost or don't have a key, or trying to make a delivery, or something. I don't let those people in, if it's someone I don't know, because they may, or may not, be telling the truth.
    If they're making a delivery - they should call or buzz the person or apartment they're delivering to, not some random apartment, claiming they "can't contact so-and-so." If the person doesn't answer, wait a few minutes and try again; if they still don't answer, maybe they're not home: leave a message asking them to call back to arrange a delivery time.
    If they lost or forgot their key - they should be calling someone they know, or live with; no answer? Wait a few minutes, try again - then call the landlord or rental company to come and let them in.
    If you don't know the person calling, or buzzing your apartment, don't just let them in the building, because you don't know if they're telling the truth, or lying to get in for some dishonest or illegal reasons. A building I used to live in had office break-ins and laundry thefts more than once.

    I actually had one of these for the first time recently, a voice message left on my home phone with the "you'll be arrested" line.
    Now luckily, I'm young enough and savvy enough to be aware of scams so I'd never be caught out by such nonsense - but, there's clearly a lot of people who aren't or they'd not be so prevalent.
    This video will only help those who see it, and I hope some do. What really needs to happen is some kind of letterbox drop from the government, aimed primarily at the generation and demographic these slimeballs go after. A simple A4 sheet with what to look out for could save countless people I'm sure - or run adverts during popular TV shows. I don't feel enough is being done to get the message out there to the people who fall for these scams. As helpful as this video would be to my Grandad for instance, he wouldn't even know how to go on TH-cam.
    And therein lies the problem, he'd be the age that'd be scared by voice messages threatening prison, and most likely to call numbers back. Fortunately for him, our family has spoken at length with him over scamming, and we've told him if anyone ever asks for money, to call us first.
    Unfortunately for others, not everyone has someone around to guide them sadly.
    It really is about time the powers that be took all this more seriously. I don't ever recall seeing any literature advising me on these issues, I recall loads about being broken into, and how to protect against burglars and door to door scammers, but never ever anything about cold calling or text scams.
    Maybe you, Shrimp, could set up some kind of petition or movement we can all join, try and get governments to take this malarkey more seriously. I'm not being ageist here, but the targets and victims are usually of an older vintage - it's them we need to be getting the information out to, and they're the ones who'll be less inclined to use the Internet, which is where the valuable info usually is.

    I got a call from 'my bank' saying that my account might have been compromised and three payments for motor insurance taken that day. They then started asking me 'security questions' to prove who I was. Naturally I refused as I couldn't be sure who they were. I called the number on the back of my bank card (from another phone) and found out that it *was* my bank and that their security section seemed to have no clue about security. They gave me my money back but I still lodged a complaint about their procedures.

    Love your new series. A scam running here in the US is called the grandparent scam. A scammer may use your Facebook page to learn your name and age and your grandchildrens' ages. You get a call from an "attorney" urgently stating that your grandson "Mike" has been involved in a car wreck and you need to send money or gift cards to this "attorney" or he'll have to stay in this out-of- state jail. Of course you are pressured to do everything RIGHT NOW!!! Scammers play on your emotions of being genuinely alarmed for your family and the secrecy and embarrassment of it all so it's not published in the newspaper. Please STOP, THINK, BREATH. Like Atomic says it's more than likely a SCAM!

One thing about the advice to hang up and call your bank - on some landlines, the call isn’t terminated until the calling party hangs up. My mum had a scam call and ended it (to call me, not her bank as she told the caller) and the scammer pretended to be the bank, using a fake IVR. Really creepy. So wait for the call to clear or use another phone if possible.

    Side note on this. Whenever even legitimate businesses ask for your personal information (address/email/phone) , tell them you prefer not to divulge that information if you don't have to. Businesses can gather data and sell it and it can become compromised, thus decreasing chances of getting spam calls/mail. You'd be surprised how many transactions and business interactions you can make without giving out personal info.

Usually, say something like "there was an issue with your tax this year", ask you to do something involving your data and money, often they sign off with something like "if you don't do this a warrant will be issued for you today"...

    Before anyone goes on about "hanging up if the caller on the other end is Indian", keep in mind that just because a significant majority of scam call-centers are Indian doesn't actually mean all scam calls are from India. That's just lazy and bad advice, and risks getting caught out when the nice-sounding fella on the other end doesn't have an Indian accent.
    Not to mention, a good number of businesses actually DO outsource calls to India, so it's not entirely unusual to find yourself talking to an Indian if you're, say, calling after a tech problem.

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, I mean, it's true that most of these call centre scams originate there (and the story behind that in a nutshell is that lots of organisations outsourced to India, then later brought their call centres back in house, creating a big surplus of unused call centre resource in India, ripe for criminals to exploit as a cheap workforce), but yeah, people should assess these scams based on the facts of what they are claiming, not what the speaker sounds like.

    Sometimes caller shows as international, nothing is said and then disconnects, I'm guessing it's because they want you to do call back.

    I've got to the stage of telling my older and less savvy friends and family that its time to 'whitelist' calls.
    Store a few essential contacts: close friends, parents, children, as contacts.
    Enable voicemail, let an inbound call ring and go to VM, check your messages.
    If its from an organisation you deal with (docs, dentist, bank), get their number from their website or some correspondence. Be careful googling.
    Then, and only then, make an outbound call.
    If its from an organisation you don't deal with, either make a judgement call, find their number and ring them, or call a sensible friend to see what they would do.
    Basically, break that feeling of immediate pressure.

      Then if it is a scam call, I just keep telling them in Slovak that I don't understand a word and just keep talking. They go completely quiet because their script doesn't tell them what to do in such a situation. And then I hang up.
