i think this is very great when your opponent is trying to do men kaishi dou. Its a perfect counter attack. Because the betterment you get at men kaishi dou the more you commit to it, and the more you open the dou

Gyaku dou is very useful in my opinion, its just hard to make it an ippon, you know?
like you can hit it do everything perfectly, but you missed 1 thing in an ippon and its not ippon.
Edit: i have a very useful advice, and its that you pull your left arm from right of above your head, to left of your hips.
And you may use your right hand for support, and accuracy. Its used for improvising for the height of the enemy/location of the dou.

Hey Andy, really enjoying your Waza study videos, really insightful and helpful during these strange times. I was wondering if you could do a Waza Study covering the 木刀による剣道基本技稽古法, I know you have touched on Debana Waza in multiple other videos but I was wondering if you could touch on some of the other waza as well.

Great suggestion! In the meantime, have you seen this video I did about the Bokuto Ni Yoru Kihon? th-cam.com/video/L-xS4f0iRMI/w-d-xo.html

@@TheKendoShow I have, actual of gone through that video quite a lot as well as this one as well th-cam.com/video/-AibfC5Gdns/w-d-xo.html I don't remember seeing if you had done one yet but I was wondering if you could specifically cover Suriage and Uchi Otoshi, similar to how you covered Debana Waza. My whole thing, and this might be in part because of being in quarantine, I've found its really tough to gauge how much movement is enough movement for the Suriage, I feel like I'm making the movement to large and in part because of that I feel like my timing feels rushed for the strike after if that makes any sense. Like wise for Uchi Otoshi, I can't tell if I'm putting in too much force when I strike down my 'opponents' strike (again due to this being self practice for being over a year in quarantine). My dojo did cover this earlier in the pandemic but that was non-recorded practice sessions and I had to miss those practices due to work.

@@Tikbalang5.0 for suriage, be sure to think about the strike you want to deliver first. The deflection is just a part of the attack, not a seperate entity. men suriage men is basically a small men cut with just a slight difference in the motion to make sure the opponent's shinai misses you. Never "wait" for the suriage to happen before making the cut. It is part of the cut.
I need to alter all waza a bit for each opponent. I usually decide in the first few seconds/minutes which waza I'll even consider setting up. If my enemy is a super explosive quick small guy, I won't even consider men nuki do for example. If the opportunity comes, I will surely try it, but my seme work would rather aim for kaeshi or suriage, depending on quickness and height of the opponent. Same with the power needed for each motion, I guess it varies... you can only get that understand via training it and actually trying it on unwilling opponents ;)

Is fumikomi necessary for striking gyaku do? And if not what other footwork are you supposed to do for corrct kikentaiichi?

    • @TheKendoShow
      @TheKendoShow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No, you do not need to do Fumikomi for Gyaku-Do ;)
Kikentai no Ittchi means that the sword, body, and spirit should work in unison to make the perfect strike. In the case of Gyaku-Do the 'Ki' is in the voice, and Zanshin, the 'Ken' is in correct and accurate cutting, and the 'Tai' is striking with the hips, with good posture ;) A stamp is not required.
      Hope that helps!

@@TheKendoShow Yes, very much. Thank you! I always thought the "Tai" part was represented by specific footwork (either Fumikomi or Suriashi). It's good to know that that's not necesarrily the case.

Good question! ...as for this waza the main difficulty lies in the different foodwork. Actually hitting do is easier compared with regular migi-do, I would say, because you don't need to cross your arms. Like with regular do-uchi fumikomi is rather uncommon and frankly hard to apply in time. Kikentai-ichi for gyaku-do is often done with the left foot, but as Andy explained there are a lot of variants of this particular waza. However, it is a basic tool for all competing kenshi that should not be missing in any tool box. Don't be shy to use practice it. Another reason why it won't be awared too much outside of Japan is that many shimpan (outside of Japan) never practiced it themselves and are unsure when to award it (It's not me saying that, but Japanese high ranking teachers that visit my country).

I don’t understand the ranks in kendo I feel like it’s a crap shoot, a guy with 30 boxing matches will usually destroy a semi high level kendo student after only a few weeks training

      No, they absolutely wouldn’t 😉
Kendo simply doesn’t work like that.

@@TheKendoShow I’ve seen it with my own eyes though, I’ve seen boxers kick boxes MMA guys, a few Filipino martial artist and even a kung fu guy it wasn’t really a high-level but he could fight, I just seen people in the sports walk into a kendo gym and be competitive, my whole point is I just don’t understand why there is rank, If it’s a combat sport it should work more like combat sports is all I’m saying.

@@roddangerson2046 as we don’t have ‘Kendo Gyms’, and judging someone’s ability to be ‘competitive’ in Kendo takes years of experience - Kendo is not a game of who can hit more times or faster than the other person. It’s not about who can win sword fights either.
Doesn’t matter either is someone can ‘fight’ or not. It’s not the criteria by how Kendo is judged.
At a legitimate Kendo club, most people are not allowed to wear any armor for the first 6months or more, never mind be allowed to ‘spar’ with anyone.
So I think what you have witnessed is not really representative of ‘Kendo’.

@@TheKendoShow That is quite possibly the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard anyone say on the Internet, I’m here watching this video because I was able to hit high-level people with this technique repeatedly almost at will, the “dojo” Allowed me to put armor on the first day I ever walked in because the owner knew I had 25 years of boxing experience, I’m so sorry it only took me about two days to learn the etiquette and attack techniques it’s not rocket science boxing is way harder also my footwork is better than almost anything I’ve seen at a “high level” kendo, if it was that difficult I wouldn’t be leaving people that are a high-level amazed at what I can do my first day in the gym sorry “dojo” 😂 . I watched this video because I was told this is one of the highest level techniques in Kendo, I was ready to complete the day I walked in, people like you are hurting the sport or you should just admit it’s not a sport. Don’t be surprised if an American version of this pops up and leaves traditional Kendo in the dust, Have fun with your Covid masks at least in the United States the sport is starting to take more of a gym atmosphere in some places which is good for the sport whether you like it or not the better athletes are going to be better than the nerds sorry dude
