For me counts the following: Open the RAW file in Lightroom and correct White Balance and lens correction, also contrast, brightness and sharpening, means everything to correct the sensor data. Then open in Photoshop and do the rest.

After using LR for years I finally adopted the same process. Finding Brian's vids is perfect for me as I use PS on all my photos. I only do concert work. Finally I can remove rigging cables effortlessly and fix drastic concert lighting. Like Brian said looking back 10 years all my photos looked the same. I am very happy with the LR-PS combo. PEACE

Hey Brian, no question PS is the most powerful creative tool. LR & PS are partners not either or for professional photographers. At one point in history, every photo I had was taken from start to finish in PS. Over the years LR has taken on more of the tasks and does so with the RAW file. Once in PS, the processing is done at the pixel level. I would do all that is possible in LR and then take the creative stuff to PS. One tool that should be the first for new PS users is to use Smart Objects and then do PS edits from there as it maintains the RAW connection. A good test is to take a photo into PS and make it smaller and then make it original size again. You will see the photo falls apart as you are shrinking and enlarging pixels. Then take the same photo into PS as a Smart Object, make it smaller then resize back to the original. You will see the photo is back to its original state without degrading because the Smart Object goes back to the RAW file for the data instead of stretching pixels. PS is a pixel editor and LR never changes a single pixel, rather it uses a small text file to apply adjustment on top of the original file. Keep up the great work I like the direction you are heading right now with your tutorials. R😎🤙

Hey Brian, just stumbled across your video and just wanted to let you know that I really like your delivery.
If I may give you my opinion as someone that uses both Lightroom and Photoshop professionally, I believe they actually work the best when used in conjunction with each other. Lightroom is an extremely powerful tool for tweaking photos to look their best sort of "as shot", and Photoshop is incredible when it comes to taking those photos and completely manipulating them. Together, they are such a powerful tool it's really just mind boggling.
Also, I just quickly wanted to let you know that the spot healing brush is by no means the best way to remove a subject from the photo in Photoshop anymore. Use the lasso selector to select what you would like to remove then go to "edit>content aware fill". It'll change your life!
    Keep up the great videos!

Wow, I just found your channel and so fortunate as I'm new to LR. I just finished their trial week and so much to learn. Your demeanor and voice, along with obvious knowledge, just sets you apart from other You Tube videos. So I subscribed and will follow along your tutorials. I just watched your "S curve" video in LR and I have a much better understanding now, rather than just use the sliders. Thanks a lot, Ted

Its pretty ironic that a true Classic application like Photoshop is 10 times better than Lightroom Classic on this area. . Its not just better in results, its also better in performance. Confirms the terrible state of Lightroom Development.

Been using PS since 1991 (PS 2.0 if I recall), it was and still is a MONSTER! I have a love/hate affair with PS, as I have become more of an LR user since 2008. As most of my workflow is very simple and basic and rarely have any needs for Layering my work, LR fits the bill. That said, you are spot on with regards to the Spot/Clone tools in PS vs LR. Any serious removal work, it is off to PS I go. Basic sensor dust/spot removal, LR does the job nicely, however as I mentioned earlier, PS for anything heavier. Ditto for cropping and altering the image with regards to horizons and the like. That Warp tool has saved my bacon on more than a few occasions where LR has let me down. I am hoping that the upcoming release of the FULL PS for the iPad has these features built in. As I do a lot of my editing on the road with the iPad Pro 12.9 (2017), this could be a lifesaver. Frankly, PS Express/Fix and Mix are not cutting it.

100% on the same page regarding PS for the iPad Pro. A lot of people are eager to see how functional it is and I suspect it’ll be quite powerful. It’s going to be a very interesting year.

Now then, I have just watched this video and I have to say you have really opened up the doors to Photoshop. I have been so impressed with your delivery on both videos as you have put the content into everyday English which I can and no doubt thousands others understand I have hit the subscribe button. Hi Brian. Good video. I've been using Lr since public beta when I abandoned Ps 7 for the Library module. This past year I've started using Ps for more than the clone/content aware functions and find myself using it more often in my workflow. That being said, most of my editing corrections can be handled nicely in Lr. Thanks for sharing!

Brian, a very good afternoon. Your video was uncannily timely. I have, like you been a LR user for many years and feel exceedingly comfortable within the environment and well recognize its limitations. PS has always been lurking there for me but frankly I find it intimidating. Nonetheless, I have decided that in 2019 I am going to become adept in its use. Additionally, I am doing considerable introspection to better understand where I want to take my photography. So thank you for this two part series.

For me, it's not either/or. Lr has features Ps does not, that are important to my workflow, such as all the file management tools. So while you can use ACR in Ps to do image editing you'd do in Lr, you don't get storage and file management, catalogs, collections, etc. So the question we thankfully don't have to answer is "if you had to choose just one?". If we did, my answer would be Lr.

I think if I could get 'selective color' controls within LR, my 'need' to switch to PS would diminish drastically - then it'd basically be a "remove stuff" and/or "transform stuff" tool, instead of an integral part of my fine art editing workflow.

    • @brianmatiash
      @brianmatiash  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I do wonder whether Adobe has drawn a line in terms of the features that it’d migrate from PS to LR. I don’t think they worry about cannibalization, because both products are offered in their bundle, but there is a possibility of bloating LR with too much stuff.

I have used Lightroom since the very beginning when it was for cataloguing with very basic edits then into Photoshop for main editing. Lightroom has got too heavy and has gone way beyond its original purpose and just now the ACR conversion is not great as they (adobe) are trying to please too many people. IMHO ;-) great vlog

What the heck! Photoshop and Lightroom are partners. You do the solid base adjustment in Lightroom working with your huge raw files so you can make big luminosity and color adjustments without compromising image quality. After that if you have a winning image meriting further work you move to Photoshop to add the final tiny changes that bring final polish to the image bringing it to a new level. Giving hypothetical percentages your final winning images should be 80% Lightroom and 20% Photoshop. In the end the final portfolio quality image is the combination of your best work in Lightroom raw then finishing with your best work in pixel-base Photoshop.

  • @pianandrill

As informative this video is there is no point comparing those tools. LR is more like adjustment tool and PS is creative modifier and bender. If You took bad photo You have to use PS. You don't need it for enhancing well done picture.

Neo's corruption is probably More to do with Micrasofts updates messing up computers again. on the other hand long talkes with the company they had no idea how to fix my problem... says it all.. so now with lightroom and photoshop and feeling the same.

I don’t agree with that at all. I know many pros, myself included, who use Lightroom for “serious editing”. And when I need to do something that I can’t do in Lightroom, I’ll send it to Photoshop but it’s not one or the other.

Although i got the Adobe subscription for photographers, i never ever have used Photoshop. There is no need for me. I shoot in RAW and only want to develop my photos. I don't make any composings or hard manipulations with my photos. To me Photoshop seems to be much more complicated than Lightroom. With Lightroom i can do all i need. Sometimes i make some final touches with Luminar or the NikCollection. Photoshop? No, not for me, although i have to pay for it. I wish i could only subscribe to Lightroom.

Totally disagree with you. PS for publishing retouchers and editors, while LR is for photographers. You need to consider pro photographers normally check before shooting, they are able to do things correctly during shooting sessions and they seldom need to do big changes in post. There is less efficiency of using PS compared with LR. I don't think you are a pro photographer, just a retoucher sitting in front of screens all day. I see in the examples you were using PS to strengthen the weakness in shooting.
