I just discovered your channel on TH-cam when I was searching how to videos for working on my boat. I’m local to Foley and really enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge with us.
This is a terrific series, on tooling Joe, and-like all your other videos-these are VERY well done. Two suggestions: 1. It would help if you identify which grit you choose for sanding at each stage of the build-both when you're using the blocks and long board, and when you are power-sanding with the disc sander or orbital. I know this is something you don't have to think about because of your years of experience, but most of us could use some guidance. 2. When you talk about PPE-and use it while you work-HEARING protection doesn't seem to be on the list. But, speaking from experience, the cumulative damage caused by power tools is no joke. Testing shows that I've lost 30 percent of my high-frequency hearing because nobody talked about the problem or protected against it 30 years ago.. I find that today's lightweight, slim ELECTRONIC ear muffs and in-ear devices are quite comfortable, and they allow normal conversation to get through. Keep up the great work, Chris (founding editor of Professional BoatBuilder magazine)

Hi from the UK, I'll be making a lift up top for my Mercedes Vito next year, I work with GRP regularly but this video and the series will help loads, thank you for your efforts. Brian
It's obvious you like to educate and you doing well! Lot of informations but no unnecessary chatter, perfect. We can name Plug or Master the piece creating the shape of the final piece. Concerning the laminating process I prefer to start from the center to the outside to help possible bubbles to be removed. The roller save lot of time and help too to avoid to trap air between the piece and the fiberglass and facilitate the work with the nylon "bubble breaker" (sorry I'm french and not sure it is the correct word). I just discover today your channel, I work composites and I really appreciate your work, it's satisfying to see top of the notch laminating process.

Just found your channel and I'm building a boat in my garage. I've always wanted to know how to make a mold for a hard top on my offshore boat. Thanks.
What a great project! This is something I'd be interested in tackling so am curious to see how you attach the fiberglass top to the t-top or whatever you plan on building. I have a Robalo R200 with an aluminum t-top with a fairly nice canvas top that's laced into position, but a hard top would be so much nicer. I've watched most of the Buskens 2900 build episodes and it's awesome seeing how you build such a quality boat. I will say that my boat has lost a bit of its shine after seeing all that you've done, but it's all good. 🤣 Thanks so much for all your hard work and for sharing your extensive knowledge.
This is my first time watching one of your videos and I enjoyed watching it. Your info is outstanding. One boat I personally would like to see you build is a bass boat of your own design.
Loving this series. You're right about how some of these skills are common across different types of work. I do some amateur woodworking and tipping is also used there to smooth out stain and clearcoat.
Glad it was helpful! Yes, most mat here in the US works best with polyester or vinyl Ester resins. There is mat available with a powder binder that works well with mat, but it isn't readily available here in the states. Seems to be pretty common in Europe though. Thanks for watching!
Another great video. You mentioned what else to build, I see on many boats very swish custom grill/bbq cabinets matched into the grp of the boat with lids and doors etc. But I haven’t seen anyone build one on TH-cam. Perhaps there’s complications needing to mimic cabinetry with hinges etc , and also the heat considerations. Maybe you can put it on the list of ideas for a video any way .
Love the videos you do fine work. I have worked in and around boat building for a big portion of my life I am now a professional captain on car ferrys and no longer do fiberglass work for my paycheck. That being said I am currently rebuilding a 24’ flat bottom skiff ( I wish I had the time and ability to put it on TH-cam) I have been truly surprised at how little boat rebuilding videos from start to finish their are on here and would love to see someone like you who seems to have the knowledge and ability to explain that knowledge do a flat bottom rebuild from bare hull new stringers all the way up
Uncle Joe, used your links to grab some resin for my BlazerBay refit project. Thanks fo the info the other day over the phone about the gelcoat. After my test pieces dried overnight with the basic white it seems to be a closer match that previous thought. But once the Alexseal is on the console I'll know more. BUT.... while watching..... you remind me of BOB ROSS! Loving your teaching style!
Excellent work and explanation Joe. Keep up the great work. I want to build a hardtop for our 36' Albin trawler's upper deck. I'm looking forward to your future episodes.
I would love to see you build a 16 or 17 ft about a 50 to 60 in bottom boat I think that'd be cool Love the videos dude learn a lot from you keep up the good work.
Do you mind advising what foam type you used, I’ve replayed 1 and 2 and can’t see it mentioned. Loving this series and now more vids posted on the next project, very much appreciated
It is a 2 pound density insulation type foam that I picked up from my local fiberglass distributor. They also call it fish box foam. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
When it comes to teaching, you CRUSH IT! I love your videos. Gonna try to make something similar with my son this fall for his 18 ft CC. All in, what's the approximate cost for all materials? Don't need itemized breakdown, just ballpark.
Awesome! Thank you! I will try to do a materials and costs breakdown for you all as we get to the end of the project. I really appreciate you watching and commenting!
thank you your very interesting inspiring and informative to watch ,im restoring a trident 24 yacht at the moment and a traditional style british open 16ft fishing boat your channel is vital
Logan slings that camera like an absolute pro! You guys are a great team Cap. I was waiting for this hard top build. I can't wait to see how you finish the plug. It obviously has to be as smooth as a baby's butt because the mold is like a mirror and if the mold is built from the plug.... well, you know where I'm going with this.
@@FishBumpTV I know you want to grow the channel (excellent, quality stuff), but to adapt to the crazy TH-cam universe, look at 'MotorCity Boat Werks' and 'Gaslighting?? TH-cam vs My Boat Building (Ep. 54)' for some hard learned experience from a great guy. Cheers.
CPT. Joe thank you for all your knowledge. I am going to build a hardtop like this for my boat and would like to know what type of foam your using. Don’t want to use a foam that the resin will melt. Thanks
Wow, thanks! The foam is a 2 pound density insulation foam that is compatible with polyester and vinyl Ester resins. I buy it at our local fiberglass distributor. The company is called Advanced Plastics. I think they have several locations in the southeast. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Hey captain Joe! Absolutely loving the videos on mold building! This might be a stupid question but when is comes to making molds theoretically could you build the frame or pattern out of plywood, do the glass work, fair it and shape it, gel coat it, wet sand, buff and polish? I know its not going to be that simple but i was just curious. Thanks for all you do im learning alot keep up the good work!!
Thanks! Glad you are enjoying the videos! Yes, in some cases you can skip building the plug, and just go straight to building the mold. It is much easier to work a outside corner than a inside corner, so sometimes it's still easier to build a plug and then a mold. Of course there is always the option to build a one off part if you only ever plan on building one piece of whatever it is you are building. I will be talking about one off part building in some upcoming videos, so stay tuned!
@FishBumpTV Thanks for the advice cap! I work in a production setting so time is always of the essence and longevity of the mold is very important so I was just kind of trying to find a middle ground for both I guess. Keep up the good work I can't wait to see what you have in store for us!
Thanks for putting this together Joe this is awesome information. Is that Polyisocyanurate foam that you used? I understand that certain foams will not work well with polyester resin.
Joe, thank you for sharing all your knowledge. I’m thinking about building my own 13ft “dingy” to carry on my 58”. I’m thinking a design like a center console. Have you thought of any designs yet? Would fiberglass over plywood be the right way to go ? TY in advance.
Another great video! What type of foam board can we use when working with Polyester resin? Thanks in advance. I’m planning to build a hard top for my Cobalt ski boat wake tower. I plan to just build one of them so I’m planning to make it with foam core and coat top and bottom with fiberglass and resin. Any encouraging thoughts?
There are lots of different marine grade foam cores out there that could possibly work. One good foam core I have used in the past is Divinicell, I also use a lot of coosa board. I will be buying the foam core very soon for my hardtop build, so I will try to discuss foam core selection in that video. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Hey Captain Joe I’m in deep with my boat. I’ve got the boat running new canvas top and cleaned up. The boat is a 1995 Pro-Line 25’ WA. I’ve run into a soft deck, head liner pulled loose and glue that needs cleaning off. Maybe once cleaned just paint with gel coat ??? I need help !!! Any suggestions ! Love your TH-cam channel !!! Bobby
Love these videos Capt. and as always great job my the camera man. When using laminating or tooling resin does cure hard enough to sand without gumming up the paper? I thought the purpose of laminating resin was to be able to add additional layers without the need to sand?
Glad you are enjoying the videos and the camera work! You can sand laminating resin, but yes it will gum up your paper. Just wanted to show different resins in use and that many resins are compatible with one another. The dcpd ortho blend cures with very low tack, and could work good if you knew that you will be sanding it. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
I bought it at our local fiberglass distributor. Their company name is Advanced Plastics. I would imagine most fiberglass distributors should have some. It is a 2 pound density, non structural, marine grade insulation type foam. It is pretty delicate when handling it, so that could be a reason why some suppliers might not be able to ship it. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Thank you! It is a 2 pound density, marine foam. They keep it at our local fiberglass distributor. It is used alot for insulated fish boxes and such. It is not very strong by itself, not what I would call a structural foam, but good for what we are doing here. I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Once again, another great video. About the poly over epoxy issue, for stressed structural repairs, I always use epoxy. Then scrub with soap and water and scotchbrite, then sand and scrub again. Then, it's my experience that gelcoat is OK over this. In any case, epoxy sticks better than polyester with a mechanical bond, for example repairing an old hull (which is all that I can ever afford). Plus, I'm waiting on your skiff build...
Thanks for your thoughts, and support of the channel! Vinyl Ester is another option for folks that want a very good bond and compatability with gelcoat. The skiff build idea has gotten a lot of interest, so we will see!

Haha, good deal man!! I will take that as a compliment for sure! Glad to help
Just found your channel! Great info and outstanding presentation! Keep up the great work!
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Excellent work and explanation Joe. Keep up the great work. I want to build a hardtop for our 36' Albin trawler's upper deck. I'm looking forward to your future episodes.
Thanks, glad you are enjoying the videos! I have always liked the trawler style boats, and a hardtop would be a nice addition!
That was super interesting, full of detail and fun to watch!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Another epic episode!!! ❤
Wow, thanks!
Joe that looks great keep the vids coming
Thanks, will do!
J.
As always fantastic content.
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and experience with us the viewers.
Please continue doing and sharing.

Your comment is much appreciated! Thank you very much for your support of the channel!
Excellent tutorial as per usual. Thanks.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I would love to see a microship build, would be awseome or the build of a complete console. Keep up the awesome job. Greetings from the Netherlands
Thanks for the suggestion, and I appreciate you watching all of the way from the Netherlands 🇳🇱!
I would love to see you build a 16 or 17 ft about a 50 to 60 in bottom boat I think that'd be cool Love the videos dude learn a lot from you keep up the good work.
I appreciate the suggestion! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
thank you very informative, I will be making a mold later this year.
Glad to help! Best of luck with your mold building!
Good video.
Thanks!
Wow, thanks so much! Glad the channel is helpful, and I wish you the best with your project boats!
I really enjoy your videos Thanks !!!!
Glad to hear it! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Haha, I agree! I am very proud of Him and his camera work! As always, thank you for your support of the channel!
Excillent job 👍
Thank you very much!
Love the content...
Thank you very much!
I would follow a skiff build for sure!
Very cool! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Well done sir.
Thank you very much!
Love it.
Thanks! I appreciate you watching!
Cheers.
Thanks! I will check it out.
CPT. Joe thank you for all your knowledge. I am going to build a hardtop like this for my boat and would like to know what type of foam your using. Don’t want to use a foam that the resin will melt. Thanks
Watching from Finland, getting the ground work to tackle fibreglassing an RV body with my Sons. Great tips and good speed
Very cool! Thanks for watching all the way from Finland 🇫🇮!
Good content.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Awesome Video! Super informative! Perfect pace. Where do you get your foam core? Do you have any recommendations on the type? All the best, Chuck
Thank you
You're welcome! I appreciate you watching!
@@Averageyoutuber81 Glad to help!
Thanks for putting this together Joe this is awesome information. Is that Polyisocyanurate foam that you used? I understand that certain foams will not work well with polyester resin.
This was a very interesting video. I beleave you said you were using a 2 oz. foam. Is that a close cell foam?
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! It is a 2 pound density insulation foam, but I am not sure if it is closed Cell or not.
Joe, great video series! Can I use the DCPD/Ortho blend over the laminating resin?? Thanks!
Thanks! Yes you can. Just remember that the dcpd has to be sanded after a day or so as it cures very hard and slick.
Joe, thank you for sharing all your knowledge. I’m thinking about building my own 13ft “dingy” to carry on my 58”. I’m thinking a design like a center console. Have you thought of any designs yet? Would fiberglass over plywood be the right way to go ? TY in advance.
What Foam Board did you use? And where did you source it?
Bobby
I see all youre videos for the hard top mold that you did...Very good job...what kind of foam you use?
Thanks for watching! It is a fiberglass compatible 2 pound density insulation foam. I bought it from our local fiberglass supplier.
You mean polyester resin(steyrene)-compatible -friendly.....keep the good job up my friend..
@@purifiermaximus7131 yep, styrene compatible.
I would love to see a micro skiff build.
Thanks for the suggestion and for watching!
Awesome job I found the epoxy csm on Amazon I use it
Thanks, glad to help!
Joe, Just finished part 2. Where can you buy the foam sheets? Not having any luck on internet search.
Joe, I’ve been eating up your content! Haha
Very cool!! Glad you are enjoying it!
Great content! What kind of foam is that?
Hi Joe , it was good to meet you at the Home Depot the other day. Can you pm me some information about doing a fishing charter?
Hey Troy, it was nice meeting you too! Just check out our charter website at islandmarinecharters.com . It should have all the info you are looking for. Thanks for watching!
