@@maxderrat I actually found James' acting especially successfull. I mean, it is quite alright. He speaks exactly like the confused and helpless guy he was, tring to sound "nice" like in the original. Especially with his interaction with Laura.
I am still very cautious about the remake, but it looks like it may turn out like a 7 or 8/10 from here.
Edit: I now lost all hope about this game and probably won't be touching it anyway, but I still think James' performance is pretty good. If we ever get a proper remake of SH2, I'd like to see this actor performing again.

Two things I DO NOT like…
    1. The flashlight being fixed to the camera rather than James’ body. Meaning looking round moves the flashlight even though James stands still.
    2. The HUD and any on-screen display, especially the red border when injured. I really hope they add an option to turn that off.

It looks like they're taking a lot of inspiration from The Last of Us series, with the player being able to break windows to gather items, how the melee combat works (like being able to instantly switch to melee and the general style of the animations, like how James lunges forward when the player attacks from a slight distance), the similar dodge mechanic and the flashlight thing you mentioned. All of those elements are also present in those games.

To add to the combat section of the positives at around 2:59 in the video, you can see that the nurse grabs the pipe that James is holding probably meaning that with some enemies you can't just mash attack to win, which I think is a good way to make combat just a bit more interesting.

The mocap for the facial animations is ASTOUDING, at least for James. When Laura talks about the "thing" she has to get in the Hospital, and James kinda rolls his eyes, does a "tsk" and says "What is it?", and the emotions on his face are so genuine I can almost hear him thinking "Oh my God this brat, ok fine..."

They went for where people were afraid to go to in their own minds. A "modern re-imagining" or "updated for modern audiences" is like telling me basically my soda will be flat by the time I get it. yeah, but to be fair even David Lynch lost it after making the first two seasons, at least the romantic warm aspect of it that I think you mean. It might be something that is just difficult to recreate when such somewhat isolated (more sincere?) small towns don't really exist anymore. I think they were swallowed up by the connectedness that comes with the internet some time ago.
I'm hoping they'll add enough that it makes up for what they inevitably lose, though. I'm hopeful. It seems they perhaps could manage that.

How James stands when he first see the lying figure is very real to modern world. He has never seen combat, so he can make mistakes. My biggest issue is that Bloober took "modernizing" the game as "remove the camera quality during gameplay."
SH1 had a third person camera, too. SH 2 had a third person centered-high camera. A third person camera doesn't 'modernize' a game. Good use of the camera to emphasize things the way the old games did was post-modern. A slight change to emphasize a door while it is safe won't hurt the player or be a detriment. James still goes forward while holding forward and backward while holding back it wouldn't matter if the camera moved to create suspense as long as it returned when needed.

This is the most coherent opinion I found about the game.
It looks great overall and after so many many years of crappy Silent Hill games or just nothing, we are going back to explore Silent Hill with an amazing ambientation and atmosphere.
People are losing their shit into details. Angela doesn't look great in some shots (I think she looks fine in others), but she looks now more like a teenager, her personality feels better than before and she looks more afraid of his father than before.
This is not going to be a game that everybody will love and that is totally fine.

Well said, among many other points raised by me and others in the comments I would add that maybe (reasonably in the favor of these people) the trailer reveal didn't do the game any favors. And allot of people really stuggle to change their minds on things. It's a human flaw. Some people find joy in admitting they changed their mind. But allot of people once they made their mind up. They will claw and reach for anything to validate that ad ifinitum.
So thats why first impressions are always so vital. Most people don't have it in them to change after the fact. It's to complicated and uncertain. Better to just find new bullshit reasons to keep the old opinion intact.
However as you said it looks much better now. It's getting to the point I'm interested in this game like with Alan Wake 2 and Resident Evil 4.

Some of it probably has to do with the evolution of technology for sure. There was much more hand animation then in combination with motion capture, and building of custom game assets and engines that with the complexity of newer games might be too big of a task. It's similar to how the animation in The Simpsons changed. Scenes became easier to animate, but much of the charm and exaggerations of the hand-drawn animation were lost.
That's probably one of the main reasons so many games seem so similar today. One can't reasonably expect someone to be able to build a game engine from the ground up that would have all the now standard features of Unity and Unreal Engine and also be idiosyncratic and unique to one game series, having also unique options to hand-animate something.

No, we just want to maintain the integrity of the story and characters and the vision of the creators. It was the creators’ work, imagination, blood, sweat and tears that got us to be fans in the first place.
If viewers who hadn’t played the game truly liked the movie, they would like it even more if the movie kept elements from the game intact.
Keep Harry as the main protagonist for starters. The loss of his wife makes his predicament in Silent Hill more desperate and agonizing since Heather was the only family he had left. Not only that, but Heather was the last connection to his late wife.
That’s way better than an irresponsible mom who runs away from a cop and her husband so she can take her daughter to Silent Hill.
But what about female roles, some may say. Cybil and Lisa were significant characters in the story. And since Heather had to grow up partially without a mother, Cybil or Lisa had potential to be strong mother figures. But of course, that wasn’t as impactful in the movie because of obvious reasons.

I actually think the best thing they could do is not just narrow her head more, but also make her sweater puffier, it's WAY too form fitting and makes her look too thin for her head. I also think it would go a long way to making Angela feel more like her previous counterpart, a woman who has a LONG history of abuse like Angela and who has dealt with her trauma in the way Angela has wouldn't wear a sweater so formfitting. Angela is the type of traumatized person who doesn't want anyone to touch her and so, personally, I'd have her wearing a big, chunky sweater that almost feels like she's hiding in it, something that obscures her body underneath and make her feel safe. Having a sweater be so close to her body is just doing her no favours on a number of levels.

I remember back when the first movie was in production the guy was crazy excited to be in charge bc he's a huge fan of the series. then why he ended up not coming back for revelations was bc most of the problems with the first were studio interferences and he was mad and didn't wanna deal with that again. but i can't find any of the articles i remember reading now since that was so long ago ugh.
assuming im remembering correctly, these lil sneaks and snippets we're being given looks like he may finally be given his way and the studio may be backing off this time. im tentatively optimistic. i always wanna trust fans to do a franchise justice when they get behind the wheel and the past several years have had really good adaptations with the help of having fans behind the scenes making this stuff. 😭

Being a fan of Silent Hill is like being a fan of Star Wars: we always return to the franchise, and each return feels like a punch in the gut. There's always a mix of disaster and disappointment, and even if there's a possibility of finding some new quality material, it will always remain in the shadow of the original trilogy.
The SH2 Remake feels just like that to me-merely a shadow. In fact, I'll go further and say that it feels more like a homunculus.

Its perfectly fine to be cautious, I have to remind myself to be such as well, but something that has cemented for me that they Are going to do this game justice is a little detail on the Nurses: They have the red squares over their mouths.
Such a small detail could have been easily overlooked or deemed unnecessary, plenty of remakes are guilty of not adding small but important details, but Bloober seems to know that this is important, and if they know that, I have faith that nothing's been left out.
The only thing that I'm not a huge fan of is that the nurses shriek when they see you, which I don't think should happen, but it's a minor gripe.

Stuff I didn’t like in the gameplay:
1-real time interactions from james, like suddenly taking out his notebook and writing stuff down. He isn’t a detective, what is this?
2-Healing items showing up on HUD. I’d wish it was like in the RE:remake. Just drink it from the inventory menu. Because minor details like this push the game into survival aspect of the genre more instead of psychological.
3-Angela: dialogues are exactly the same. Also her delivery of her lines is much worse than the original. James is not holding up to it either but angela is so bad.
4-animations: walking animation is good but there is something wrong with running. Also that garden door needs to be heavier it feels like paper when he pushes it. Also I wish they added animations like in the outlast instead of just pushing the doors with your body. Like press x to open the door in normal speed, hold x to open slowly. Press x while running to open the door fast. That woulda been so good.
5- make another ost with modern drone sounds like in the resident evil and leave it up to us to pick in between.
Well these are all that come to my mind. Other than these I’m absolutely fine with the remake.

Thank you for the shout-out, Max! I completely agree on everything you said about what feels unnatural about Angela's looks and animation. I do wonder if it's intentional as a way to make us feel uneasy, if that's the case, then it kinda backfires. I do hope they can tweak that and the melee ground finishers as well as some other animations, like the way James interacts with doors. Also, let's expect the game will have some gamma/brightness levels to play with, since by doing some experimentation on the gameplay trailer footage during the hospital section and some HDR playback magic on an OLED screen, I can say that black levels are raised and blown out like hell, which could be fixed by October or remedied with some good in-game settings, or even some Reshade.
    ___
And, to elaborate on the fact why some people would undersandably disagree about the change with the radio section in the other video (and it is valid to be against change just for the sake of change), I still stand by it. I can understand the argument of like how surreal and dream-like the original introduction to the "lying figure" was; how it's supposed to "not make sense" for the player and not have James shit the bed right there because of this underlying symbolism and dismisal of its consciousness for wanting to find answers in dead-end places, sticking your hand through a hole, not caring about your survival, etc... still doesn't make the finding the radio any less "videogamey". Sure, the game is designed to make you feel uncomfortable, but it's still a videogame, so many of the decisions they made when designing the original game came down to getting you to buy what they are trying to communicate, and that entails having to make decisions that just serve the "gameplay" aspect of it and don't have any real deep meaning behind whatsover, and which have the possibility of taking you out of the immersion in some cases, like putting a radio in a cutscene in a random closed-off tunel with a visible monster to signify that monsters make the radio go off (SH1 set up still is the best in this regard), or that the dead bodies you see everywhere have James' model because developers just found it easier to do that, so they used it again for Harry's dead body in SH3 with slight modifications, or that James encounters abstract daddy monsters in Lakeview hotel because "it's a videogame lulz" according to Masahiro Ito on Twitter.
So, yeah. This section in the trailer is videogamey as well, but at least makes more sense in a game where you as a player are encouraged to make sense of the world. That's my two cents. Rant over lol

Honestly, the new gameplay has reignited my excitement for the remake. I enjoyed what I saw and didn't have any issues with the combat animations as you did. However, I do feel that James' interactions with the environment, like placing his hand on gates or walls as he passes, are missing. These subtle details enhance his presence in the world, but I understand that implementing such animations can be challenging for a small team. It's a minor gripe and certainly not something that would ruin my experience with the remake.
That said, I do have two concerns that could impact the game experience. Firstly, as you mentioned, the combat becoming too dynamic, reducing the fear factor. The dodging mechanic already worried me when the remake was first revealed, and now, seeing the quick action heal feature in the new gameplay adds to my concern. The original game's combat was terrifying not just because it was clunky but also because the healing process made the player vulnerable. The anxiety of healing while an enemy was nearby with the menu open added to the tension, and I fear this might be lost with the new mechanics.
My second concern is about the new UI. Specifically the addition of a bullet counter and location announcement. The bullet counter removes the tension of unexpectedly running out of ammo, which can reduce the game's fear factor. Similarly, announcing locations undermines the sense of disorientation and being lost, which is crucial for the atmosphere. The city’s unpredictable layout and the need to frequently consult the map contributed to the horror and vulnerability. Providing location names can diminish that feeling and remove the uncertainty about whether you're in the right place, which detracts from the experience. I hope there will be at least an option to disable the UI.
Also, I’m not a fan of the red vignette health indicator. It feels too contrasting and unnecessary since James' posture already serves as an excellent health indicator. But this is just a personal aesthetic preference.
Overall, I was pretty happy with the new gameplay. At least now I know that the remake is not going to be horrible as the last trailer made it seem like it would be. It probably won't be perfect (it's impossible to be perfect for everyone after all), but it will definitely be a great game!

Haven't been feeling it since the very start. The alchemy between the "extreme" and the "subtle" that eastern developers had in their vision is gone, impossible to imitate or replicate.
Would be laughable to even think of re-capturing that same (literal) work of alchemy.
I think it simply has to do with something rooted in culture and times. (No, I don't fetishize Japanese devs. It's just the way it is in this case.)
The vision, sensitivity and artistic intuition of the original team in that particular moment of their lives are aspects that can't be artificially replicated for any sum of money in this world.
What can I say: it looks modern in every possible way. Modern, with all its negative and positive connotations. A modern game for modern audiences, in looks, presentation and feel. Characters look, react and feel like modern TV standards.
I hope that people enjoy it, but I can say it's definitely not for me. Never expected nor ever even wanted a remake to be fair.

I have sympathy for this argument. That's one of my primary concerns that is going to last all the way up until I play the game. @@maxderrat I'm sure it can be a worthwhile experience if you give it the opportunity.
Maybe SH is not the right thing to modernize, that's all.
The problem I have is that this whole series is one of the most cannibalized, misunderstood and trampled-over intellectual properties I've ever witnessed in 40 years.
It bears such a great power that everyone wants to fight for its appropriation or the validity of their interpretation.
Nobody does that for Resident Evil.
Imagine if somebody from Hollywood in 2030 decided to film a remake of Eraserhead. Promising they're going to "stay true to the original" but bring it "to modern audiences".

      Choice of haircuts, costumes.
That's why at some point you went "Mmmmhh... Ewww" when the original tracks were playing as the new James explored the environment (It was probably just an edit for the sake of the trailer, I assume, but still...).

Nobody wants to tread on that mine field that is SH1 and the cult. Nobody likes the cult.
The fire, the soul split in two. It's too complicated for the western developer to understand even though it is SO rich in western esoteric symbolism... Despite being under our nose, we never understand it, and we need the Japanese to reinterpret, re-package and sell it to us before we shout "oh wow! it's a masterpiece"!
      Miyazaki-Souls situation right here.
Nobody will remake SH3 without a remake of SH1. Nobody cares about that poor weird guy Henry Townshend.
All the sequels beyond 4 are an outright (distorted, misinterpreted) copy of SH2.
This speaks volumes about the power of this game. The story is a simple trope of amnesia. Literally the most overutilized thing in media.

Having an actual combat system (including dodging) but making it a bit janky is the best way to translate the awful controls of the original into modern gaming. As such, I think it succeeds in getting the right balance between rewarding some skill but still letting you feel relatively vulnerable. A smooth melee combat system means that it would be easy to get good at it and thus make you feel powerful.

@Luis-rp2lm ... I take it you never played 2. The nurses look like that because they're a representation of James' pent-up sexuality. Just saying you know the meaning doesn't mean you realize why the original design was brilliant. It is for this reason I'm gonna press X to doubt.
The contrast between extreme body horror and appeal is what makes them interesting. When you're designing a monster or character you need to understand the concept (or personality if a character) behind what you're creating first. The idea with the nurse is going from that quick shift of lust to revulsion. It also signifies that perhaps James never cared about women for who they are, only their bodies, since they lack faces. This game is barely passable in presenting that.
It stinks of the same poor design that hit the Fool's Idol in Demon's Souls remake, where they took a figure that was supposed to be serene and welcoming so she can trick her victims, and had her immediately snear and seem malicious in the Remake. The intent behind the design is the most important thing to convey.

Other than that it looks good. But they should not call this a faithful remake. Nothing wrong with making changes as long as it tells the same story. But it's definitely not faithful to the source. Max, I'm not gonna lie, while I won't knock EVERY positive you mentioned about the game because I can agree on things like Laura's face or some of the visuals, this largely reads as you trying too hard to be optimistic.
Angela's face is a huge red flag like everything that came before it, a signal of bad things to come. It looks bad, sure. However, how can you completely fail to mention Maria? They kept everyone else's classic designs but redesigned her to be distinctly less provocative which is horrible considering IT WAS THE ENTIRE POINT OF HER CHARACTER. She was a visually perfect version of how James wished Mary still was. They toned her down and made her look like a middle aged mom just returning from the grocery store. That is a HUGE red flag when it comes to potential compromises on the game's narrative and themes.
    Think that's worrying over nothing?
I think you forgot that the game is being published by Sony who are whole hog on DEI and ESG, is running on Unreal 5 who literally set parameters around what games could be made on their software that revolve around DEI and ESG, and Konami straight up came out and said this game was for "modern audiences".
Then stack on top of that the lack of fixed camera angles because they are just trying to follow the tracks of the RE remakes and are scared to just do an analog controlled fixed shot game (which still work, games like those are STILL coming out in the indie market and doing perfectly fine, let's stop pretending like it is a death sentence). The original camera system allowed the game to center shots on important objects, monsters, cinematic angles meant to evoke certain feelings, and now they are gutted entirely just because of the stigma against them which shows a lack of balls in that regard. But as a result of this change, they now need contextual prompts to appear on screen that show you where items and interactables are. Let's also not forget that this camera style tends to shoot straight up your character's --- the moment you back into a wall and SH2 is FULL of tight corridors. Yada yada, you get the point.
There is a general lack of integrity here.
Everything you are praising is SURFACE LEVEL.
Remain skeptical until proven wrong. It's not like there weren't 8 Konami managed Silent Hill IP's before this that proved shallow and vapid or anything. It's not like Bloober have a history of plagiarizing other companies (check out "Bloober Team Bites" by Bobvids for more on that) or anything. You have EVERY reason to think this is going to suck and the illness is on them to prove us wrong. And if we are proven wrong, GOOD. I would love that. But we currently have no reason to think they will.

      "Diversity. Equity. Inclusion."
It is the policy that you cannot craft a piece of fiction without representing very particular parties, usually targeting specific races, the female gender and any number of bizarre representations of trans or otherwise dysmorphia addled individuals. If that sounds ridiculous that's because it is, but it is very real. You may have also heard the phrase "ESG", and that is the scoring system major corporations like Sony, Microsoft, Warner Bros, Blizzard and so on all grade their content and the content of companies under them by.
Why are they so obsessed with this? Because they literally get bank kickbacks for participating in this behavior and it has been encouraged by Blackrock. It's why characters get routinely blackwashed nowadays, or turned into trans characters, or suddenly become gay, and so on so forth. It's why Disney literally can't release a single project without it eventually becoming a woman empowerment story and often at the expense of suspension of disbelief or whatever worldbuilding previously existed.
It's why Kathleen Kennedy keeps getting jobs, why the Sweet Baby Inc issue was such a big deal and why everything seems so insufferably focused on identity politics while having all rough edges smoothed out to fit a certain agenda.
This makes it a VERY scary prospect when talking about the Silent Hill 2 Remake as Konami and Bloober both dip their toes into this, but more importantly, Unreal Engine literally released a document disclosing all of these guidelines recently (which you are free to look up) which outlines what people using their engine have to abide by and it is literally everything I just described.
Given the content of Silent Hill 2, this means LARGE PORTIONS OF THE STORY will either have to be gutted or changed dramatically to fit other people's sensibilities. Hence why I say they are "compromised". Pleasing fans is not the objective here.

    • @Impalingthorn
      @Impalingthorn 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

And before anyone starts expressing doubt, yes, all of these things are verifiable and you can find these guidelines on any search engine. In fact, most of them are using the same guidelines and you can probably find some variation of them just by looking them up in Google images. Look up "Disney DEI guidelines" just as an example.

It was an overall mixed bag for me. It still feels heavily that Konami is still searching for a success formula of the format. They are currently focusing on the past and not really looking forward. Two big projects based on a legendary videogame that was created over 20 years ago. There is much work needed to bring the Silent Hill IP back in style. Also, the refusal to release any of the older games in good quality is baffling, but this is something, you can also blame Capcom for. Speaking of Capcom, just yesterday I saw a short, weird but cool triphop reel of Resident Evil 2 Remake Cutscenes and man, this game is over 5 years old and with every effects intact, the game looks still criminally good, surpassing, in my opinion at least, everything the Silent Hill 2 Remake currently has to offer. I won't say that the Remake looks bad, I think they nailed it in terms of the design of the town and enviroroments and I also do think voice acting and the melancholy atmosphere is great from what they've shown. But there is so much other stuff that still looks weird or not properly worked on. The animations are a complete mixed bag and in some scenes, every character has some unintentional uncanny valley vibes surrounding them. There seems to be no proper inventory or HUD and when James is hurt, you have this horrible red bar around the border of the screen. Some designs looks like they came straight from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 era. The Remake is still lacking serious production values and I can only hope, they will still use feedback to give the game the polish it needs. If they can do that, I think this game can be the first new Silent Hill project worthy of the name. The Short Message was, and I still think that, an interesting project and could be way better if it would handle the themes presented in the game more subtle.

My only major gripe with the new 'finding the radio' moment is that the monster attacks you. In the original it's terrifying, but technically harmless. In my opinion the fact that James is reacting in self-defense in the remake is a mistake.

This Transmission renewed my confidence in the Remake. Bloober has proven they can nail the environment, ambience, and performances from the actors. Now I just need to see them refine the combat (make it preferable to avoid combat, but still satisfying to engage in) and storytelling (showing, not telling). If they can do that, then I would be confident in giving them my money and saying that they’ve succeeded in a quality remake. I can tell they’re pouring a LOT of love into this, they just need to continue doing what they’re doing and refine it!

What is this art style you are talking about?? Is the art style in the room with us??

    • @BrianOblivionB
      @BrianOblivionB 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Art styles describe the way the artwork looks. Style is basically the manner in which the artist portrays his or her subject matter and how the artist expresses his or her vision.
Style is determined by the characteristics that describe the artwork, such as the way the artist employs form, color, and composition, to name just a few. Another important factor in determining the style of an artwork is to examine the way the artist handles the medium, taking into account the method or technique that the artist uses. An additional aspect of art styles is the philosophy or driving force behind the artwork. All of these stylistic elements are defined by the choices artists make as they compose their artwork.

I would love to see the fixed camera perspective, it adds so much to the gameplay, I wish that the devs would add a setting where you can choose which camera mode you’d like. There could even be areas of the town where there isn’t fixed cameras as I understand it can be clunky for a newer looking game. I would understand having follow cameras outside silent hill and in the open areas of the town like in the fog, that way when the fixed cameras are on like in narrow corridors or spaces like that it really adds to the intensity of the fear of the unknown and creates a further feeling of entrapment. Idk how they’re gonna do the butterfly room in the apartments after u see pyramid head as that room is primarily scary because of the fixed cameras, there’s a red light emanating from somewhere in the room similar to pyramid heads light and you can’t just turn around and see there’s nothing there you are stuck waiting that’s what’s terrifying about it.
