  • To celebrate the 45th anniversary of our Romulan cousins appearing for the first time, I thought we should take a look at some important clips from the Star Trek episode "Balance of Terror."

    Mark Lenard's acting is poignantly Shakespearean. That, along with the storyline's tension and action, makes *Balance of Terror* one of the best Star Trek TOS episodes, bar none.

      Mark Lenard and Leonard Nimoy made Vulcans (and Romulans) in to believable species, but they defined it so much that pretty much anybody else just looks like an actor with pointy ears compared to them. Very similar to John Colicos defining what a Klingon is and nobody quite pulls it off quite like he did.

    "Must it always be so?! How many comrades have we lost in this way?" Mark Lenard did an excellent job with the Commander. He truly was an honorable man, not in search of glory for himself, but only to fulfill his duty. Kirk was more independent and willing to go against his leaders, but there was clearly a cultural difference as well. The Commander clearly preferred to protect his crew, but he was a dutiful soldier at the last.

      As for this story it is a rewriting of "The Enemy Below" (1957), another great movie. Instead of a destroyer, there is a starship. In place of a U-boat, there is a ship with a cloaking devise. Both commanders are shown as "humans" doing there duty with no malice to the other. The biggest difference is that the both captains survived to meet at the end in "TEB".

      Maybe if Humans and Romulans had met in a different time. Before they became creatures of conquest driven by glory and passion. Romulans seem to get a kick out of creatures that can match wits and intrigue with them so maybe that's the true key to peace with them in the distant future.

    • @danbasta3677
      @danbasta3677 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ryan macdonald OK. Heres the facts. As you've heard Mr. Spock explain that if the Romulans are an offshoot of my Vulcan blood, and i think this likely, than attack becomes more imparative. In ancent Vulcan, the Vulcans were cruel, warlike and treacherous in their actions, until Surik began teaching the ways of peace and of logic as well as surpressing violent emotions. The Vulcan people began adaptating those teachings and became a civilized society, HOWEVER, there were other Vulcans who NEVER adapted the ways of peace, and continued on the ways of their forefathers. In the third season episode, The Paradise Syndrome, You've heard Mr. Spock explain the group called, The Preservers. The Peservers are responsoble for reseeding different humans and humoids throughout various parts of the galaxy in order to preserve what they thought a race of beings that will eventually adapt the ways of peace and civilization. These violent Vulcans who never adapted peace and logic as well as surpressing violent emotions, were transfered to the Romulus Remus section of the galaxy, therefore, now called Romulans, an offshoot if the Vulcans, and in the third season episode, The Enterprise Incident, you heard the female Romulan Commander say, We can appreciate the Vulcans, our distsnt brother. Its sad though that the Original Star Trek Series couldn't continue onward, and what's even more sadder is the fact that the Romulans still remain somewhat of a mystery as to their society and their civilization. We know very little about their society, and Mr. Spock does know more, however keeps it all under cover as to the type of civilation the Romulans live in.

      They did alot with these sets which were all built from scratch for the new series in 66. You can't repurpose old props for a new science fiction show. Everything had to be designed uniquely. Props to the props dept

      @Paul Kryder It's not the noise... it's the power signature. When Spock mistakenly clicked on the science station, the Bird of Prey detected the energy reading. Not the noise.

    • @rcslyman8929
      @rcslyman8929 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Paul Kryder Theoretically, it's possible. While true that sound wouldn't carry through space the way it does through water, you aren't talking about an empty vacuum, either. Reverberations against the hull, even as light as sound waves, might be detectable through sensor readings.
      However, this is the part that really doesn't make sense. Sound reverb would be a minor thing. But that ship's a massive heat signature in the cold vacuum of space that any sensor would detect long before an errant sneeze.
      But then, that would also negate the Romulan cloaking device...

    • @JohnRodriguesPhotographer
      @JohnRodriguesPhotographer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rcslyman8929 actually if you look at American stealth aircraft they go to Great Lengths to mask the infrared signature of those aircraft. I would think that the technology to mask infrared signatures would be much greater in the time frame that Star Trek takes place.

Surprisingly robot monster (everyone knows the one were the creature wears a diving bell and ape suit) gave the creature some doubt and emotion. It was better than I thought!!!!!!

      Since the Romulans are "the sundered" the ones who left Vulcan rather than bow to the philosophy of Surak, I think families were split in the disagreement. Even great houses and major families like Sarek's must have split so who knows? This commander could be of the part of the family that left.

    As much as I am not a big fan of New Trek, I would love to see the Romulan Commander character return in a future movie. In the Kelvin timeline, this offensive never happened. The Romulan Commander never died. In a new movie, Kirk and crew are forced into cooperation with the Commander and his crew to defeat a threat to both the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire.
    In the end with the enemy defeated Kirk and the Commander meet and share a drink. At some point the Commander says, "Kirk my friend, in another reality I might have called you enemy". I know that is corny, but it is still better than Spock shouting, "KAAAAAAAHN!"

  • @Russell_Huston

    I liked the idea the show writers had (obvious given the name and titles they used), of Romulans as a kind of Neo-Roman race, with the basic belief in the idea of the universe being governed by the predatory principle. That made them survivors in a frequently hostile galaxy, with an extreme devotion to duty. Like the Romans, you could imagine them as sophisticated, artistic, cultured, even poetic, all while having to be strong, fierce and cunning.
    I like to imagine that the corner of the galaxy where the Romulans went to, after the Vulcan split, was a particularly tough stellar neighborhood.
    There were two Romulan commanders in the original series, both great characters, but we never know their names.
    Klingons were more popular, but I thought Romulans could be more interesting. And way more good looking!
    And Mark Lenard has great presence.
    If Spock was a legend, Sarek was the Father the legend looked up to.
