I bought it to convert to regular 40 channel am mode to get the extra channels on upper and lower sideband where my Troup spends most of its days. Don't care much about 10 meters but to occasionally listen. Not interested in getting a ticket. So this radio is ideal.
I see this at about $145 by Christmas, maybe less at times. Export radios are a fun niche, and at times have been hugely popular. 10/11M Radios are far and away the most popular HF radios in America, estimates go into the millions.
This radio (the ARES II) is a fantastic performer. It has some really great and very unique features in that radio. It's not your dad's old CB!! Don't forget you can also program 2m RX and VHF police / fire / ambulance / marine frequencies (it's a basic scanner too!) 73

I really like the novelty of that radio's retro look and feel. It would be a lot of fun for me. Would be more fun if it was 20 or 40 meters instead of 10 meters, personally. I'm interested enough to most likely buy this or Anytone ARES 2 (yes, internet, I'm aware they are the same radio) in a year or two. But it this thing was 40 meters only, I'd be all over they pre-order right now. Great stuff as always TO!

When I look at the specifications for these radios they almost always list the input power as 13.8 volts. Most vehicles have a 12 volt system. Why aren't these radios designed to expect a 12 volt power supply instead of 13.8 volts?
That's a good question, I think it starts from being battery operated in the days before electricity, then cars that had a "12v" system, but had a ">12v" charging system because batteries need more voltage in to charge up... if you look at the manuals, most radios take a range of voltage and have internal regulators. But "in the main" 12v is easier to say.
In MOST radio/electronics gear stating a "12 volt" operating voltage is REALLY meaning the 13.8 volt specification as a cars "12 volt radio" actually sees 13 to 14.4 volts in actual operation from the cars charging system. IF a cars charging system only output 12 volts, the battery would NEVER fully charge.... AND, as this and similar power transceivers typically draw ~ 6 to 8 amps when transmitting, an internal battery would be the size of ANOTHER radio in total volume = NOT PRACTICAL....
I think it’s made by Anytone and priced appropriately. I would have like to see them take advantage of the board and make the radio not as long/deep. I paid $200 back in 85 for a 148GTL all setup, it had a Malaysian board in it.
Funny. Compare the picture of this thing with the Cobra 146GTL SSB C.B. radio and they 'look' almost identical. Same knobs & switches and meter and screen

I prefer using freq readout for selection, makes no sense to have channel mode except for illegal cb user unless im missing something i like my anytone 5555 N 2 for 10 meters
For those of you using this fro FT8, how are you handling PTT? I have a DigiRig cable for an old Yaesu FT757gx. It just has 1/4" audio at 8 pin Yaesu PTT. I was thinking of making an adapter cable with 4 pin on one end 8 on the other. Thoughts? Thanks.
I wanted to do FT8 on this radio. I was thinking about using VOX or making a simple breakout box that would use the RTS or DTR signalling and assert dominance over the mic cable's PTT line

The three IRF520's seems a little odd. This transistor is rated at 60w dissipation so seems like maybe class C could do 45 W maybe? (I am a little rusty at this) but definitely 12 W Class A (AM). Could it be they are using one of the transistors for Class A operations and the others for Class C? Just a thought.

No thanks. Looks like a cobra CB. They could have done some really cool things with a dedicated 10m radio….but they didn’t. Why not come out with a decent screen with waterfall. VFO tuning, no stupid looking chrome finish. Reminds me of the “burnt turd” line in anchorman.
I agree - they could have. It seems like nobody is making what we would call a "great" 10m radio. I wonder how close the cost of a 10m "great" radio would be compared to a G90 - that's the real problem.

Cb band is many times much more fun and the people are friendlier. I've met many nice folks from south Africa to Australia too eastern Europe and into the us
In my opinion this is just a hacked up CB. Not really something a "ham" is gonna buy. You can bet there is a super easy conversion from 10 meter to CB and the free band channels between cb and the beginning of 10 meter.
11 meters pirates buy ham rtx for doing dx. But now it's time for revenge. We will buy a CB radio without vfo, frequency meter, split etc. for local chatting on 10 meters. 😀😀😀

I had a Cobra AM CB back in the 70s , and early 80s this looks very similar but 10X the power . Even got a PA switch happy days !

I rather have a VFO selection instead of channelized selection. To have to refer to reference card to see what frequency you are on is kind of klunky.

I think it has 400+ memories (and you can even overwrite the WX memories and listen to 2m stuff/10m stuff if you wanted)
