  • In Jesus in Galilee Pt 2: Herodians of Tiberias, Walking The Text Content Director Brad Nelson examines the background and origin of the city of Tiberias. Built on the shores of the Sea of Galilee to honor Emperor Tiberius, the city looms large over the life and ministry of Jesus because of the powerful group of Jews it represented: The Herodians.
These supporters of the Herodian regime sought to preserve their wealth and power by staying on good terms with the Romans. Racially Arab, ethnically Edomite, religiously Jewish (sort of), culturally Greek, and politically Roman, the Herodian dynasty was masterful at exploiting its complex identity in order to pursue its ambitions. Like the Herods, the Herodians were more than happy to compromise their religious convictions to preserve the status quo.
And that’s exactly why they saw Jesus as a threat. Any talk about a kingdom other than the kingdom of Rome could lead to trouble. So, in order to protect their interests, the Herodians tried to entrap Jesus with a question about paying taxes. By the end of Jesus in Galilee Pt 2: Herodians of Tiberias, you’ll be inspired to follow Jesus’s example of integrity and vulnerability in a world of self-interest.

This is an amazing introduction to this very complicated subject. Given the actions of the Herodians, from Herod the Great on down, the presentation is very objective and great history. Thank you very much for this professional production.
