  • In Pt 1 of our new series on David and Goliath, Walking The Text founder Brad Gray explores one of the most well-known Bible stories of all time. But like all stories that stand the test of time, there’s more to it than we fully understand. A careful examination of the geography and where the story takes place on a map yields a whole host of fresh and unexpected insights.
But what can geography teach us about following God more closely? A whole lot it turns out. The Philistines are coming from the coastal plain along the Mediterranean Sea. It was an urban, wealthy, technologically advanced society. The Israelites were secluded in the hill country. A rural, rugged area largely cut off from the rest of the world. And the only thing standing between the Philistines and the Israelites was the shephelah, a 27-mile long, 10-mile-wide corridor with 6 valleys running West to East. If the Philistines could break through the Elah Valley, it was just a hop, skip, and a jump to the capital at Gilead.
In other words, David and Goliath isn’t just a casual battle. It’s a national crisis. If the Philistines break through the shephelah, it’s all over. The shephelah is a metaphor for life. It represents the battlegrounds where the faithfulness of God and the ways of the world duke it out for allegiance and influence in our lives. By the end of David and Goliath Pt 1: Guard Your Shephelah, you’ll have a new appreciation for the David and Goliath story and a new metaphor for guarding your heart and mind in our world today.

Thank you. There is so much truth and powerful messages in the pages of the Bible. I agree with what you are saying in regards to the Shephelah. I believe it's a perfect metaphor of clashing cultures today. Kingdom vs world. I also believe that we don't realize that our Shephelahs are too, also battlegrounds. As followers of Christ we tend to be very passive and think we need to stay out of matters of the world, i.e. politics or don't proselytize, even to our children. We are afraid to be told we are judging. But, there are many Shephelahs in this world that we should battle in, or the enemy will encroach and take our daughters and sons captive--as the world has already taken many. These battlegrounds aren't just our personal individual fights, they will also have an affect on many for generations to come.

Amazing revelation! Something I did learn from JUC, there is so much more we could truly understand in the story when we consider the geographical location. Love the map explanations! What a huge difference when we see & hear explanation of the locations mentioned in the bible and then see it in the maps and see what it represents.

      Yes!!!
Brad your teachings/interpretations are great but starting to get a little over board on the editing effects.
      Keep it simple
