I absolutely despise the way popular music has gone the last x-number of years. The move to fix everything and have everything perfect takes the humanity out of the music. Human musicians are not machines... even the best will have imperfections in the work. It is what it should be.

Of course we do, and we love her for it because it’s human; she is not a robot. Even if her songs are just so damn sad we cry, they still feed us emotionally. They feed us something we hunger for- a real emotional human experience That’s connected to somebody else. I don’t care if she is off pitch in some places, as was Judy Garland especially in her latter years, it’s much better her than some perfect AI bitch. Oh, agreed. Every time I listen to this song, I hear the flaws (they're much more apparent to me in this song than any of her previous chart-toppers). Her pitch isn't always right on, and there's a...a threadiness, a kind of buzz, in her high notes, and on a very picky level, that bothers me because she is such an excellent singer in general. BUT. I love it that the emotion and expression in her voice show through the flaws. On top of that, the lyrics of this song are about making it through difficulties, and the imperfections in her vocal delivery underscore the meaning of the song.

Nobody has a greater capacity to teach that there is fundamentally OBJECTIVE merit in that which others would dismiss as merely SUBJECTIVE--that there are "just (appropriate) sentiments" toward things.
Rick is the type of teacher lauded by C.S. Lewis in The Abolition of Man: "Aristotle says that the aim of education is to make the pupil like and dislike what he OUGHT.”..... “Until quite modern times all teachers […] believed the universe to be such that certain emotional reactions on our part could be either congruous or incongruous to it-believed, in fact, that objects did not merely receive, but could MERIT, our approval or disapproval, our reverence or our contempt.”.... “The man who called the waterfall sublime was not intending simply to describe his own emotions about it: he was also claiming that the object was one which merited those emotions.”

i so enjoyed your discussion of this song and I can see the angst in your eyes as you said, "She reminds us of the way singers used to sing". It is truly sad, today's state of music! Sonic landscapes are all but disappearing as well as true emotions. Thank you for all that you discuss, it's sooooo rewarding to watch you. I will be honest, I find myself wanting more of a beat, a nice natural kit, like a Vinnie Colaiuta, honest drum sound, Seven Days(10 Sumoners Tales) type beat but alas..... you are right. There is nothing else needed in this song. It is honest and raw and amazing....

This review helped me hear the instruments and arrangement, instead of blowing the whole thing off.

I really appreciate how you point out that there are imperfections in her vocal performance. Obviously you did not mean that negatively. In a time where everything is autotuned and quantized to death, a real musical performance with slight imperfections is a breath a fresh air. This reminds me of someone pouring out their soul and just letting everything out. That’s so powerful and relatable. The overly quantized/autotuned music today doesn’t hold a candle to this.

When my 87 year old grandmother, 61 year old mother, me at 39 and my kids 7-14 can all agreed that she's an incredible singer...that means she has true prefect talent! And I've seen her live twice and it's always either the same as the recorded version or better! Usually better because depending on how she's feeling the song, the crowd, her emotions she sings it that way by adding words or changing words or the emotions hit at different parts of the song that's not hit on in the recorded version. It's magical actually. And the reason her songs sound the way they do is because she sings and records each of her songs just once. For the demo, start to finish and that's the song that's released, period. She said at one of her concerts that the song we hear recorded is the first time it was all put together, it was all of her raw emotions she was feeling while writing the song being put together for the first time. And if she can't do that in one take then the song doesn't make the cut. She goes so long between albums because her songs are hers and based off her real life at the moment she wrote it, she can't sing songs that she didn't write and make a album based off someone else's feelings that she had no part in. So she has to live a life to make a record. And it's magical! I hope I'm 80 years old and able to hear Adele's 60 record 😂
