Thumbs up for Deborah and her scissor/sheers/hedge-trimmer skills. The ''before and after'': 6:34...then the edit at 6:42. She's taken 10 years off you.
My Disco' has been making some interesting noises in low-range for a year or so and I bought an LT230 from a scrappie but I want to rebuild it before fitting it so this series is going to be pure gold!
Also, every time Mike says "y'know" I find myself thinking of Fred Dibner, but I digress. :-P
I am up to 8 parts so far so you can easy reference sections
When I got to shimming the centre diff I gave up on the later book and went back to the early one as the newer one was demanding special tools for set up
Early Saturday morning viewing, coffee and tunnocks and marvellous Mike on the screen. Fantastic. ☺️
Another good use for baler twine !
This is so very helpful. Thank you Mike!
Glad it was helpful!
Another lesson learned here
Dont trust the label/writing on the shim bags :)
Nice tutorial, well done Mike.
And thanks once again for your explanations.

Good tip!
Mike’s my hero
Thanks!
Mike
Mike, the spring balance load measurements used by LandRover to set preload on that centre diff, differential pinion shafts, front axle swivels and taper roller wheel bearings all seem a little "abstract" to me, I've never liked the method and tend to use the "experienced feel" method. Never had a failure, but the "spring balance" method is, I guess, a good baseline standard if needed.
Wait until further episodes and I ditch the 'modern' WSM and revert back to the older version - what a frustrating week!
Extremely helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
The M10 bolts are to be torqued to 45Nm!
Hallo can you tell me how much is thre amount for the Parts? Thanks Best Regards Axel
The transfer box master rebuild kit is £130, but it does not include a shim kit or sealer
ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/product/lt230-master-rebuild-kit/
I've got a reconditioned box from Ashcroft's and noticed that the output shafts were notchy when turned; glad to learn this is normal. One question though' the box has been sat in my garage for at least 5 years as the vehicle I was going to fit it to got stolen. Will I need to do anything before I install in my current project?
I would plug all open holes and put oil in it and swish it about and turn the gears to circulate the oil - drain it off and then fit to the vehicle
Hope it has not been in a damp place and humidity has got into it
I don't suppose you need the retaining ring with the solid cross member do you?
Would you not get a different reading on the spring balance with the gears dry/ oiled?
I was thinking that heavy oil won't compress so it will likely have the effect of thickening the shim.
Possible - but you do not want dry gears
How thick is the retaining ring, and how will that affect the shims needed.
Can you give me a part number of the ring as I am not sure what you mean?
Mike. Would the forged cross-shaft give a false weight reading regards stiction ? Maybe a comparison with standard LR T/C double cross-shaft might be due ! V.
I would not think so as it is just a support for the gears
How accurate is the string mike
It is from Land Rover special tools, so bound to be off
@@BritannicaRestorations 😂
