I can understand Tohru's predicament right here, she's afraid of that the town will suffer collateral damage if they were to go all out, plus she's also afraid that, if she were to lose Kobayashi, she would go berserk.
Even worse she feared her own lack of control. Just taking hits was frustrating her and she was about to nuke the town herself to settle it. A good reminder of how much control she needs on a daily basis.

It's a set of factors. Tohru doesn't want Kobayashi to get hurt but she doesn't want to risk destroying the city because it would restart the cycle of battles she hates so much.
Despite Tohru being from the chaos faction, she always hated these endless battles. That's another reason she likes our world so much, it's more peaceful than hers.
So if the city were destroyed, she would be blamed for starting a war in a place that has nothing to do with them and she would be dragged back into the incessant battles.

Funny as it is often enough characters do it because they're confident, because they like toying with people.

Next, many transformations happen in less than the blink of an eye.

The steam exhale after the fire breath was such an amazing detail. KyoAni is just at the top of their game
I’m pretty sure there was a show or book about how dragon bodies would work in reality, and it said that if fire breath was involved, the wings would have to be heat sinks to manage the body temperature. Can’t remember where I heard it from though.

@@coltonwilliams4153 The running science theory on them postulates that if dragons did breath fire it would likely be similar to the bombardier beetle's spray which is two separate fluids get sprayed out that combine on contact and ignite. It would be the least volatile and most practical way to do it. Likely the chemicals would be in two separate venom like chambers and expelled in a fashion similar to that of a spitting cobra only with a more immediately volatile reaction.

It's easy to forget how strong she is because of how lovable she is, but remember that the only reason Tohru almost died at the beginning of this series was because the humans had to bring a LITERAL GOD to smite Tohru. And even while injured, she had enough strength to open a portal to Earth when not many other dragons can even do that at 100% power.
You got to love that even with all the hits, she wasn't doing damage, she was just annoying her. The moment she didn't have to hold back, boy like someone hit alt-F4 on that B.

Try watching "Beyond the Boundary" or even "Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions" to understand KyoAni's action potential. They're honestly just an amazing animation studio.

@@deinonychus1948 to be fair... Power rangers kinda has a running gag where if you try to interrupt a megazord link up the rangers just outright troll you. Either with a force field, attacking back or making you fall off a cliff. Happens at least once per series.

you can really see how tohru and kobayashi's relationship has changed over time. kobayashi trusted tohru to protect the city, but when tohru got hurt, she begged elma to help her. now thats what i call character development.

Please. MAPPA does great work, no doubt, but they were never on par with KyoAni. There's no studio, except for maybe Ghibli, that puts as much love into every frame as Kyoto Animation.
KyoAni just dropped a new trailer for the project the studio was working on that was postponed back then in 2018. Every anime studio is probably screaming in fear right now lol.

When you think about it, a lot about this scene makes either sense or feels logical. Maybe I'm looking too much into it but I enjoy those small details.
- Tohru is really nice and always seems to goof around but she remains a dragon that could wipe everything if she ever wanted, in a blink of an eye. It is seen clear as day when she says she cannot go all out or she would wipe the city but also when she says she's about to explode and just go on a rampage so she doesn't have to take on Ilulu for longer. She's controlling herself so that kind of situation doesn't happen.
- She doesn't suffer from Goku Syndrome. As soon as the barrier is up, she doesn't try to say anything as final words or wait for Ilulu to turn into a dragon. She had enough with her and just went straight to blast her right away before she becomes an even bigger threat.
- Remember, Tohru is a Fire Dragon. Until now, all her flames have been red but this time, it's blue, meaning it's about twice as hot as she was doing before. She also condensed her blast for maximum effectiveness. It also prevents the chance for collateral damage (even though a barrier is up). It's clear as day that she was going full power.
- The heat dispersion. After blasting something that powerful, you would expect anything the need to cool off in some way. And she did, which is a small detail but it's appreciated since you'd imagine a dragon just breathing out a bit and be done. But no, she released a huge amount of heat to cool off.
Felt like watching dbz for a sec there. Very cool fight scene.

What happens when you mess with a dragon’s hoard? There are much less painful ways to commit suicide. Especially when that hoard includes people. If you’re lucky enough to steal a dragon’s gold, they may let you off with only eating your arm or leg so long as you return it and give them enough food to satisfy them. But if they lose a person, then that hoard will never be the same, and absolutely livid doesn’t even begin to describe the multi-ton lizard about to drop on you like a volcano.
