    I love this - couldn't figure out drifting when I tried before. Maybe give the car a boost after drifting to make drifting feel more impactful?

  • @sustainedsixteenthmusic2689

    I downloaded this game, and I absolutely love it! The drifting physics are so satisfying. It would be cool if you somehow added a time attack mode. Maybe you could average and weight the time through each type of road tile to get a time score. That way, the game would reward finding the fastest drift through a tile. Also, the coin system was somewhat confusing at first. It took a few rounds to figure out that the coins were 5% of the total score, so maybe you could add a counter which displays the amount of coins during the round to make it clearer how to earn coins. Keep it up, I'm excited to see where the game goes!

    • @jonathonhowe
      @jonathonhowe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! I'm excited about revisiting the scoring system. I've got big plans and I like the idea of keeping track of the speed through different areas.
      Being more transparent about the coin conversion is definitely a good idea.

    Loved the video and Installed the game, I would love it if you add some collectable like mario kart on the roads that does something. Other idea is to add more places to do "trickshots", like in Indusso map there is 2 lamps where you can pass the car throught and the dopamine spike felt great hitting it. Keep up the great work :)

    • @jonathonhowe
      @jonathonhowe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you!
      I never thought of that. It’s a cool perspective for designing tracks.
      As for power-ups, I’ve thought about giving the play some sort of advantage when they do certain moves, like a reverse entry, big jump, or even another hard move like going between two lampposts.
      Unsure how I could give an advantage, simply speeding up the car makes it hard to control. Maybe a points bonus?
      Is that along the lines of what you’re thinking?

    • @paivaf19
      @paivaf19 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jonathonhowe Exactly that, I feel like the power ups like boosts and jumps would make it very difficult to play so I feel like it needs more systems to spice up the gameplay. Ater the system(s) I'm sure it will be more clear the path to "collectables" on the road. But that's for the future. Other thing is I felt like it was very difficult to gain enough coins to buy more cars, so to fix it you could add a box or something that when you bought you had the chance to buy cars with different rarities (common, ...), iI think that would add a lot to the gameplay. Just ideas but happy to help :))

    I'm guessing you aren't going to make the car physics open-source, however, can you point us to some resources that you used to develop them so far? Like, where to even start. What you have here looks very good so far, but the whole world of racing games is just mind blowing in terms of the physics and coding behind it. Would really appreciate a few pointers!

    What *I think* the features that this game needs:
    1) Some sort of chaining drifts system. Inertia drift seems impossible (although I'm new to the game, maybe you might achieve inertia with later cars)
    1,5) Score multiplier. If you chain drifts long enough you can multiply the scores you're gaining. And if you hard-stop your car or don't drift for some time you lose that multiplier.
    (+ you may gain more multipliers if you're close to either of the walls, kind of like carx)
    2) Night mode. I think it would make the game prettier and it can even have a function. Maybe only in night mode your score gets effected by multipliers, or vice versa.
    2,5) Initial D brake trails for night mode. Self explanatory.
    3)Alternative control schemes. Maybe a steering wheel one, or a two button one?
    3,5) Fixed steering line thing(?). The current steering line can't be fixed to one location. This may be relatively easy to implement to the game, but I think it would greatly improve the game.
    I really like this game and I want to see it grow. Wish you the best.

    • @jonathonhowe
      @jonathonhowe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is good stuff, here's my thoughts
      1) This is something I have been thinking about. Perhaps when drifting and steering hard in the opposite direction a boost is given - speed, points, or faster turn
      1.5) There is actually a hidden multiplier already, it slowly builds up while drifting and drops when not drifting. I would like to show it and make it smarter though. The idea is exactly what you've suggested.
      2) That would be cool. The challenge with night mode will be performance. Lighting calculations are expensive and the game is already slow.
      2.5) Of course
      3) Agreed
      3.5) This was intentional. In earlier versions of Drifto it was fixed to the centre. This would be somehow incorporated into alternate control schemes.
      Thank you so much for the suggestions! I hope I interepreted them right.

    Hello, I downloaded your game recently, and while I really enjoy it, I have come up with some QOL improvements that could be made. The friending system does not seem to be working on android phones. Also, the points-to-coins mechanic is a little confusing for newer players. Adding a little coins counter that upticks once every 20 points would make the app much more user-friendly. I also think adding some sort of collectible that gives you bonus points if you take the ideal drifting line would be cool. I saw a review on Google Play that mentioned maybe adding a minimap, but I don't think that is really needed. The player is given plenty of time to adjust the slide after each corner, and I personally feel that a minimap would make the game feel less realistic.

    • @jonathonhowe
      @jonathonhowe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the friend system seems to be broken completely, it's on the backlog of bugs. The point to coins conversion should be more transparent, not sure how I'm going to fix that yet, I'm hesistant on adding more UI in game that doesn't add the the run itself.
      Ideal drifting line bonus is a big yes. I've got a big list of things like this I'm calling gameplay spice.

    Here is my review and ideas to improve the game:
    Is a great game. Is fun and also challenging, but it has its flaws and possible improvements.
    The game needs a sun with smoother light and shadows being cast behind trees and buildings. The game would not also be fund, but looks sick mit a bit more refinement to visuals.
    The tracks are awesome and have many different parts, but they definitely needs more.
    Tho, if u try to make money and unlock cars there is no reason to play all tracks, after u receive the Highscore-Cash rewards.
    I would suggest something like a collectable Chashout-multiplier at score 250,500,750,1000,... ; They would respawn every 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1h after collected and would multiple the Cashout with 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x, 2x times. I would give the player a reason to play every map again and come back to the game.
    All these cars have a slightly different handling model and all look very sick🔥
    But some cars are just not as good than others.
    I'd be cool if there was some kind Mini-Quest per car, which upon completion will unlock new color or reward u with money.
    (Example: Reach Score 1500 on Rally to unlock ...)
    The more side ways u go the higher the score gets. Also for holding a longs Drift there is a multiplier.
    But u can't chain drifts if u change direction, without resetting the multiplayer.
    Also a feedback if u hold a long drift.
    If u want to add cosmetics or rewards, tire smoke and underglow, are good options.
    In the end, it is a really fun game and hope for more updates.

    • @jonathonhowe
      @jonathonhowe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are some amazing ideas!
      1. Yes the visuals need some love. Unfortunately they're going to get worse before they get better. There are some performance issues caused primarily by the effects used currently. They will get better, but not in the next few weeks.
      2. Yes, there does need to be some more incentive and I love that idea. The tricky part I feel will be communicating how such a system would work. I'd love to look into it more.
      3. The scoring is far too ambiguous. I'm planning on redoing this, including more feedback like you've suggested.
      4. I hadn't thought of those cosmetic options. I like
      Thank so much for the feedback!

    Although optimisation doesn't seem to be a main problem for you at the moment, it very much is. Even in low graphics, the game lags and sometimes even stop for a second or two on budget phones (for example my Mate 20 Lite). So I suggest you spend a bit more time on the optimization side of things. And the stater car is lacking on the acceleration department, I know it might be intentional but it makes starting the game a bit boring, considering in the beginning you crash a lot.

    • @jonathonhowe
      @jonathonhowe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My gamedev knowledge is all learnt through tutorials and trial and error.
      Before I started Unity I did have 5+ years programming and 2/3rds of a computer science degree which would've made it way easier.
      I think the best way to start development is to just make stuff. Come up with an idea, it doesn't have to be good, and build it. Watch tutorials, read docs, talk to others.
      The biggest challenge I've found is making the system well, that is, writing code such that the system is flexible and scalable.

    Just installed it. It's quite fun to pass some time. Music and sounds didn't work for me, not entirely sure if there are any yet (but there are settings for it).
    I definitely agree with some other comments that the base mechanics are there, but it needs some spice. Collectible coins as point boosters or something would be one idea.
    I also feel the game is missing some notion of progression that makes it harder the higher your score is. Think Subway Surfers where you keep going faster and faster. Power ups could also slow this progression, allowing you to keep going for longer.
    For new players there should be a bit more choice, too. Let them select one of three cars to start with (Pokemon style) or unlock a second car based on achievement of scoring 100 or something like that. It doesn't take terribly long as it is, but the first unlocking experience should come even sooner IMO.
    Personally I didn't quite understand how scoring works. At first I thought it's "drift time", but when I unlocked the city and went around the roundabout it became clear it's not the only factor. I also had trouble understanding the UI at first when it comes to points versus money earned.
    But all in a it's pretty fun already, great job and can't wait to see where it goes.

    • @jonathonhowe
      @jonathonhowe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for all the feedback!
      I agree with all of the suggestions. I have been thinking of how to implement more gameplay spice and making the scoring more transparent.
      Having multiple starter cars would also help with the start of the game feeling a little bland.

    Be careful with adding too many technical characteristics. I honestly like the simplified car properties because as a player I really don't know what torque or gear ratio mean in relation to how a car handles. For example in Forza there are so many different statistics that I don't even bother trying to understand them and even after finishing the game I have no clue what they do. Even if you have these "in the background" make sure to keep it simple enough so that casual players can easily understand the pros and cons of each car. Thats just my 2 cents... Looks great though!

    • @jonathonhowe
      @jonathonhowe  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah for sure.
      Most of the details are hidden from the player, they're mostly for me to tweak how the cars behave
