So, I noticed there was a lack of "human or vocaloid" quizzes on TH-cam and I wanted to create a video for anyone out there who wanted to test their friends to try to get them to like Vocaloid. I also wanted to promote songs which I believed sounded very human like but do not have as much views as other videos on this site.
I do encourage you to listen to the songs used in the quiz, cover or not. These are some of my favorite songs!

So I was in Tokyo the other day and my host sister (who also likes Vocaloid) told me that for someone who speaks Japanese, Japanese Vocaloids sound pretty realistic! Hopefully we get better English Vocaloids then :)

With vocaloid voices, there's always that weird waver or some strange spacing of words and letters. I did struggle with a few, but humans ALWAYS sound more powerful and dynamic, something vocaloid still lacks in vocals no matter which language.

I disagree. Although i agree that there is a disticnt difference between the sounds, i find some vocaloid are more powerful and dynamic than human singers, even though they are more limited. Its not so much about the range, but how they use that range, to create a powerful sound.

KInd of agree in general, but there are exceptions. It depends on how much expression the human puts in and how well the Vocaloid is tuned. I struggled with some songs in the quiz, and sometimes I could only tell because I recognized the voice rather than how well they were enunciating.
For me it’s like trying to spot a singer using auto tone look for unrealistic pitch shift
Toki wo Kizamu Uta by IA (in this video) was very realistic, I was nearly fooled, and the only reason I wasn't was because I recognise IA's voice.
With Vocaloid 5 now, the vocals have become more human. If you check out the cover of 1, 2, Fanclub! by Meika Hime and Mikoto, you can see what I mean.
Another famous producer is Mitchie M, who is known to be capable of making vocaloids sound like humans. You can check out his songs, Birthday Song for Miku, Ai Dee, Ohedo Julia Night, Seraphim On The Ring, etc.

It's kind of easy because there's certain noises humans make easily while when a vocaloid makes that same noise it sounds drastically different. Maybe that's just me since I do listen to a lot of vocaloid music.

Well it's a lot harder when you're listening to songs in another language. If it's your own language it's easier to tell.
Not really tho, I mean if you're use to listening to this kind of music. You can hear breathing patterns in the songs or the tone of the voices, tbh most of the songs sounded black and white to me. Maybe 2-3 of them I was uncertain on.

I don't speak it either, but you can easily tell if an utau or vocaloid is made really well by the amount of static in their voice bank or how well the syllables flow together. And the hint of breathing in the song (slow one in this case) would of been something recorded separately or was already implemented into the voice bank. VY1V4 was really smooth until the music broke into the louder scream, which is impressive.

Its impossible for me to mistake vocaloid for human and the other way around by now, but Mitchie M's song (the Birthday song) may have fooled me if I didnt know his tuning.
I guess I should consider myself a vocaloid pro. I guessed right on all of them

You could distinguish the songs easily since you can hear the stops and robotic like sounds with the long vowels or how the short words go in together like it somehow make a unnatural sound that's inhumane

I listen to some of these songs religiously, that's one thing.
And with a discerning ear, the difference between vocal synth and human is in pronunciation and dynamics.

Fun fact! The reason they sound so much more real in Japanese is because Japanese has genuine 'phonemes' that match up with the syllables-- ka, ki, ku, ke, ko, sa, shi, su, se, so... So imagine the word 'kagerou'-- it's literally typed as it's spelled! 'ka-ge-ro-u'; every sound is naturally separate in human speech as well as VOCALOID.
On the other hand, imagine the word 'heat'-- you can't do the same thing at all! I'm not even sure how it'd be done in the program, though I assume they have a barrel of 'end sounds' (like the 't' in 'heat'); the point is that _non-accented humans don't have any stops between these sounds, while VOCALOIDS can't do that kind of blending._
That said, you can almost always tell when they try to hold a note. Songs like #2 just sound like those notes have been programmed.
I got 19/21 at 7:06 I got confused by Cyber SongMan voice it sounds so human and at 8:21 I knew it it has to be Zola Project

Dude, it's my first time listening to Cyber Songman and Bruno, and like hell was I able to say they were Vocaloid, I was shooketh! Specially with Bruno since Spanish is my first language, he sounds so so so so damn good! I couldn't believe it!

The best way to tell is to Listen to the beginnings and ends of words. The vocaloids have this subtle bite to them that gives it away
For anyone whose a bit unfamiliar with VY1V4 she sounds so realistic in fairytale it hurts
For humans you can hear the rawness in the voice and vocaloids have more of a perfect tone range flawlessly and during some phrases the system can’t handle it that well so they either have to speed up or slow down the vocaloid’s speed in singing or rapping
I missed a few waow these are some realistic sounding vocaloids/utauloids who need more recognition
Humans have a smoother-sounding pitch shifting. Vocaloids doing. Also vocaloids can’t mimic ‘rumble’ very well.
some vocaloids can growl if they are tuned well on a modern software like v5
but honestly, some vocal synths that can't growl can do it with good enough tuning nowadays

Cyber song man nearly messed me up. I don't often listen to songs with his voice so I was confused - but luckily I know vocaloid. The shortness of sentences/lyrics, the slightly synth/robotic sound, the pronunciation _(eng voice banks)_ , and the general shakiness _(the V4/V5 vocaloids have less shake in their voice but its still noticeable)_ . Which to most people (outside of the vocaloid community) aren't all that noticeable or recognized.
I dived into the community when the pachelbel's canon acapella vocaloid video came out (2011? 2012?) - so noticing these things and telling the difference between human and vocaloid is second nature for me.
Side note: Steel - when they sing in songs with their own voice - they synthify it. They've said it themselves.

Mitchie m always makes his songs sound so realistic
it was probably easier for me since i'm slight vocaloid weeb, but vocaloids seem to always have this computery quality in their voices that make them very distinctive from human voices, which are more rounded and dynamic. that's probably why this felt more simple.
(ps, major kudos to the producer who made that Zola cover of Paradichlorobenzene. it was very human-like) (psx2, 18 got me. the effect on the voice made it hard lol)

The most noticeable difference between a vocaloid voice and a human voice is the way syllables flow between each other. Some can be tweaked enough that its super subtle, but you can still hear the clean break between sounds. It depends on the consonant (or lack thereof) that starts the syllable; with human voices, we can't always start a second note in a phrase as accurately as if we had started singing on that syllable at the start of our breath. There's an audible transition between sounds that is very hard for vocaloids to replicate, especially if the syllable begins on a vowel (humans would blend vowel sounds as they transition and sometimes use a vocal break to switch notes without sliding). Vocaloids don't have to rely on breath to make sounds so a long string of syllables can sound really choppy, like someone had edited off the last couple milliseconds of the sound before playing the next.
When you've listened to many vocaloid songs you know some of these songs already so you can tell and the voices and accent of the vocaloids lol

Kaito Wow but it still sounds "off" a good majority of time, and that's just because of limitations on the recordings. It will improve with time. Compare Leon to Cyber songman.
Aubreygirl1115 Aubreygirl1115 There's times where Vocaloids dont sound too off, but a lot of English songs have some sort of accent or they arent that clear with pronunciation. So yeah, they aren't perfect, but it still depends on what producers you listen to!! I do agree that it takes time for improvement to happen though ✨

Vocaloid are bad when they sing in english. Their accent sound... Hu. Huuu. Listen to Luka. She is the worst, really. And Luka is my favorite. But her english accent is clearly trash. The best one might be Gumi. Tho Meiko sounds good too.
They are still good at singing, it's just that their accent is so bad that you know that it's not a human for sure.
Pearl - Tsukye i'm pretty sure a lot more Vocaloids are better at Gumi in English. Maybe the Native English Vocaloids? They do exist, you know
