    Man, I’ve been hoping someone would react to this film. You’ve got to be the first! Another fantastic (and very underrated) Clooney film is ‘Out of Sight,’ directed by Steven Soderberg, starring Clooney, Vingh Rhames & very young Jennifer López..

    Great video as always sir! One person I want to highlight is Saïd Taghmaoui, who plays the captain who interrogates Barlow. I think that 1999 is the most loaded year for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar of my life, maybe ever. The award went to Michael Caine for "Cider House Rules," defeating:
    * Tom Cruise, "Magnolia"
    * Michael Clarke Duncan, "Green Mile"
    * Jude Law, "Talented Mr. Ripley"
    * Haley Joel Osment, "Sixth Sense"
    That's an incredible quintet, and I would not have even nominated any of them. My list would have been:
    WINNER: Chris Cooper in "American Beauty"
    * Laurence Fishburne, "The Matrix"
    * John Malkovich, "Being John Malkovich"
    * Brad Pitt, "Fight Club"
    And the aforementioned Saïd Taghmaoui. In an absolutely loaded year for supporting performances by both men (women too), Taghmaoui is to me one of the best five supporting performances of that year.

      Two other notes on supporting roles in this movie:
      * Cliff Curtis is a legendary chameleon. He played the Iraqi father in this, but two years later he played Smiley in "Training Day," the guy who almost kills Ethan Hawke in the bathtub.
      * Spike Jonze does not act much, but he is an Oscar-winning screenwriter who has a great directing career, including 1999's "Being John Malkovich."

    I've always seen this film as a modern update to Clint Eastwood's "Kelly's Heroes" (a WWII behind-the-lines-heist). Someday you should watch that one, too. I don't know if it deserves a reaction but it's a favorite war movie of mine. You deliver good stuff, J.

    At the start when you said it's a war movie I responded "It's an end of the war movie." When things are wrapping up people will just grab onto any valuables they can find, it's a transitionary period rarely shown in film

    One of my favorite George Clooney movies! I saw this with my parents and we loved it!
    However, it wasn't with controversy as Clooney and director David I Russell got into a fistfight during filming, where it involves the ending to the film as Russell was accused of shoving an extra several times on to get a rise out of him. Having had enough, Clooney punched Russell upside the head, they ended up wrestling each other to the ground till Ice Cube, Mark Wahlberg and the entire cast broke up the fight.
    Clooney and Russell finished the scene, and vowed they never work with each other again

    Based on my dad's descriptions of being in war the theme/tone switching seems accurate. The seriousness of death is there and its terrifying. At the same time, a bunch of 19-22 year olds will find ways to have fun. Throw in a ton of weapons and ammo and you get things like putting C4 on nerf footballs. There are also a lot of "Conrad types" doing random wtf kind of things all the time.

  • @ADiaDeLosGiganteZ

    Its awesome that you reacted to this film! One of my favourites and a very personal special movie to me. I still say it's some kind of masterpiece, completely forgotten by the majority of people. Modern day war movies don't even come close. I love the tonal shifts, the experimental style, the strange editing... Hell, even Marky Mark is good in it! Please do more movies like this, forgotten gems and cult classics. I love the fact that you, unlike a lot of reactors on youtube, will just give these movies a chance even though you've never heard of them or even know what they're about. Great way to discover new stuff! ✌

  • @jasoncar1469
    @jasoncar1469 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Pretty sure the tonal shift is representative of the chaos in war. I am sure you've seen other movies where one moment the soldiers are walking along and chatting it up having fun and suddenly someone gets killed out of nowhere.
    This film gives that chaos a more constant feeling. Which is probably more accurate depiction. At least I would think.

    I love this movie It is most definitely a hidden gem. No two actors play the same kind of role just like living in the United States. The plot is solid the music is great....including Chicago - If you leave me now.

  • @darrenh5418
    @darrenh5418 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The tonal shifts was definitely a Tarantino influence and sort of the style back then. Filmmakers were a little more experimental with dark and light tones. This one had a political message throw in too to make it feel more chaotic. It's good to see a reaction to this with fresh eyes because few movies are made like this now. Everything's so damn polished.

    Such an under rated film. I don't mind the tone shift but I can understand your view in your breakdown of it. It's really an interesting film given all of it's themes and major points about the US involvement in the region given that it came out after the Gulf War just a few years before the US would be back there again.

  • @thedragonlee76

    The best part of this movie is when George Clooney got into a fight with the director and put him into a headlock.No joke,the director was a complete A-Hole and there's footage of the fight.The director would yell and yell on the set and belittle everyone and Clooney had enough and they fought.

    When the soldier murders the woman in the village, the tone of the movie just completely changes. You talked about how it was difficult for you to nail down what tone this movie had as it went from comedy to somewhat serious. But in that scene, it just goes completely dark. Not just that, but the kid snipping at the Iraqui soldies and then getting killed himself. This whole scene is so gritty, dark, and shows the horrific things that happen in war.
