I saw these guys recently. The singer was nearly 70 years old and has NOT slowed down. Was not expecting them to be that good at that age but it was better than when I saw them nearly 20 years earlier. ❤
The song is called "Stand In Line" from the album "Head Injuries" the concert was called Oils On The Water. Midnight Oil are unsurpassed as a live band but also excellent song writers and musicians. Such diversity across their albums from frenetic punk-prog to alternative pop-rock.
First saw them 79 I think tripping off my nut 17 in a surf club on the northern beaches of Sydney and all I remember is watching the screws slowly shake out of a sign saying max capacity 200 people as 1000 plus of us shook the f### out of that building
Yep, that is was music is supposed to do, make you feel it. One of Australia's most important bands to emerge from the pub scene of the 70's. Starting from the northern beaches of Sydney playing hotels such as The Royal Antler and The Manly Vale on a Friday night to rocking stadiums across the land, a band that is hard to define. Coming out of a surf culture to later challenge the thoughts and feelings of a continent. A band that called for cultural change, challenged a nation to consider the indigenous people who had been displayed by the arrival of the white man into Australia. This band is important and powerful in it's message. Personally I get off on their early albums when I want to cut loose, but the messages cut deep in the later albums, changed how I look at the world and gave me respect for more important issues.
Just need a Time Machine. 1985. The best concert ever. They did a raffle and only a few hundred fans got to go. Location was secret. One of the holy grails of oils gigs. Retired now. Pete just turned 70. The last gig was 4 hours and the energy was on the same level. They don’t make them like that anymore. Ooooiiiillllssssss
This was the 16th song of the gig. It was filmed on Goat Island which is a small island in Sydney Harbour. It was a radio promotion event and was by invite only. The energy of Midnight Oil is equal to AC/DC. This concert is in Oz rock folk lore. They simply nailed it.
If you wanna learn all about them there's a new 100 minute doko on them coming out soon (Midnight Oil: The Hardest Line) - just premiered at the Sydney FIlm Festival - in fact the opening movie of the whole festival! Trailers on TH-cam already :)
When the drummer smashes all those drumsticks at the end, he always in the pubs in the early days they would fly into the crowd so some people in the audience would take a prize home, i never was never lucky enough to get one, but the oils as we call them in Australia always blew the roof off when ya saw m play.
We used to call his dance the stomp in the 60s surf music craze but Peter takes it to whole new level . I would have liked to have seen him at official parliamentary do's when he was the minister for the environment .
Remember hearing Rob Hirst the drummer speaking of seeing a Johnny O'Keefe concert, and realised how to match the energy of that band, was the only way to make it
Oils on Water is the name of their concert series from 1985. This is not a song. There is no song called Oils on Water from the catalogue. I think they are performing the song Stand In Line live
Great Reaction. You should watch this whole concert, it's performed on an island in Sydney Harbour with The Bridge and Opera House as a backdrop. They start playing in the late afternoon and into the night. It's the best concert ever performed in Australia, well I reckon anyway.
Oils gigs were like nothing else. Anything could happen & usually did. In general, top class Australian bands of the era were brilliant live, because you had to be. Constant touring, constant gigging and the only way to build the following who bought your records was to be amazing live. This whole concert film is available on You Tube, the concert is called "Oils On Water."
If you ever had the privilege ,to see midnight oil at their peek ,you would see them play with this energy for up to 2.5 hours . To me they are the best band in the world. Oh the concert is called "oils on the water" the song is "stand in line"❤
That concert was on Goat island in the middle of Sydney Harbor it was an invite only, if you want to know Midnight Oil watch the Documentary "1984" Peter Garrett is the singer and one of Australias best politicians
Agree with comment below... To get the full jist of this , please guys! watch the entire concert. I was lucky enough to see them that same year in Melbourne. They blow you away.
The Oils were regarded at this era by luminaries like Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend and others as the best live act on the planet. Check out their first three albums and can I point to the last track on their first album (self-titled) named Nothing Lost/Nothing Gained. This highlights their prog rock origins before seeing The Saints and Radio Birdman at the Funhouse in1977 and realised that if they didn't increase their BPM's for every song they'd be left in the dust. Moginie and Rotsey formed one of the greatest dual guitar attacks ever, along side Malcolm and Angus Young. First four albums are corkers.
Oils on Water was a concert held on Goat Island in the middle of Sydney for the end of a Sydney radio station 3RRR. Only a limited few were able to be on the island for the concert and tickets were won on the radio station. I think it was then televised. The Best Full on concert. 🎸🎸
Lived in oz during 1985, saw oils in Rockhampton QLD, and at Sydney entertainment centre during that year, I had triple J oils on water front shirt and still listen to that awesome gig here in UK
Speaking of Eminem's Lose Yourself Kasey Chambers an Australian country folk singer does an awesome version of this song it'll blow your mind, you'll absolutely love it
How cool is Australia, the lead singer Peter Garrett ended up being a member of parliament in our government. Best rock band, always hard, fast, tight and Peter Garrett being 6ft 4 dancing and running amok on stage just brilliant. Australia has had some brilliant rock bands.
Drummer Rob Hirst said there is not a band on the planet that intimidates them. After seeing them live many times back in the day I'd have to agree with him.
This was from a concert the band did on Goat Island in Sydney Harbour on January 13, 1985 - the event was called "Oils on Water". This song is called "Stand In Line" and was released in 1979 on their second album, Head Injuries. Midnight Oil gained a cult-like following in Australia through the late 70s, 80s, and 90s, and became known for their ridiculously energetic live performances, relationship with their fans, and their unique type of songwriting which was famous for integrating strong and fierce political messages into killer grooves. This song was about not following what everyone else does, and making fun of those who "stand in line" and wait for things to come to them. Their most famous song, 1987's Beds Are Burning, is about handing land back over to the Aboriginal people, who inhabited Australia for 60,000 years prior to European contact. The Oils split up in 2002 but regrouped in 2016, released a few more albums, and played their final tour in 2022. Check out what they did at the 2000 Sydney Olympics Closing Ceremonies!
One of the best South African record Producers was Robert John Mutt Lange he worked with ACDC, Foreigner, Def Leppard and others please play Heartbeat City by the Cars 1984 was a Synth classic.
The Oils are absolutely epic - Love your reaction and I agree with the passion. A couple of things the name of this song is 'Stand in Line' and the concert was called Oils on the Water - recorded on Sydney Harbour. Next thing your next reaction needs to be Kasey Chambers - 'Lose Yourself' (cover) This is an ABSOLUTE MUST SEE TRACK.......What happens when COUNTRY meets RAP. Kasey Chambers (she is an Australian Country superstar) doing a live cover of Eminem's 'Lose Yourself'. Completely unique take - definitely something for both of you. - AMAZING. th-cam.com/video/S70xek3x4ro/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=kaseychamberstv
I feel sorry for people who did not grow up with early Midnight Oil in their lives. (or INXS, Cold Chisel, and The Angels) In the States, the Oils are regarded as a one-hit wonder for Beds are Burning, which is quite boring in comparison to their earlier stuff. Head Injuries, Place Without a Postcard, and 10, 9, 8, .... are still three albums I listen to ,40 years later, mostly while driving, but at other times, too. While already mentioned in the comments, I'll reiterate a few things. Band Name: Midnight Oil Song: Stand in Line Concert: Oils on Water (as pointed out, the concert is on Sydney Harbour, with the Harbour Bridge as a backdrop) Dance: Peter Garret's six foot plus and lanky and he that lanky, jerky, awkward dance was trade-mark of the band. Audience: In the earlier years, they would allow audience members on stage and they would dance along with Peter. Unfortunately, times changed and they stopped allowing that. (saw a vid where security nails a guy for jumping up on stage and Peter immediately, mid-song, had strong words with the security guy for the way he handled it) Energy: Was it raining? No. Sweat. On cold days you could see the steam rising from Peter's head. When they used to do smaller, poor ventilated, indoor venues, Peter had oxygen off-stage so that he could get his breath back.
And then Garrett went on, as Minister of the Environment, to green light a timber mill in Tasmania to log one of the last remaining strands of cool temperate rainforest left on the planet….
The Style of dancing is Aussie Pub Flail. Males of the Aussie race cannot dance, so just stand and flail and hope it attracts the attention of the sheilas. The Garret variation is particularly energetic and guaranteed to clear a spot around you, until a rival Garreter moves into the space and then confusion, collision and mayhem occurs.
Weird how you’ll get a flood of reaction videos to the same thing. It’s not like this song, from this concert is a world known iconic thing (even if it should be). So how is it it’s chosen by these channels? Considering how many performances and songs are in this live performance that would melt faces.
Na that's just how Peter Garrett dances 😂 his dancing is actually an Australian national treasure ❤
Im 57 years old, Listen to the Album head injuries. Superb as a 15 year old it rocked !
The Oils are the greatest live band of all time. No gimmicks or pyrotechnics, just raw talent and energy. End of story.
There is only one man in the world who dances like that. His name is Peter Garrett
I saw these guys recently. The singer was nearly 70 years old and has NOT slowed down. Was not expecting them to be that good at that age but it was better than when I saw them nearly 20 years earlier. ❤

Seeing them live is UNBELIEVABLE!
I was lucky enough to get to a few Oils gigs back in the day, you are right.
Yep. Same. Met them a couple of times at Uni refectory gigs. @@Darryl_Frost
No better show on the planet hands down. Aussie treasures.
First saw them 79 I think tripping off my nut 17 in a surf club on the northern beaches of Sydney and all I remember is watching the screws slowly shake out of a sign saying max capacity 200 people as 1000 plus of us shook the f### out of that building

It was a Triple J gig

Such a tight band.
Electric as always.
A thing of beauty.
~250 people won a radio competition to a secret concert. Just happened to be Midnight Oil on Goat island in Sydney harbor.
Used to listen to triple J back in the day, I moved up to Queensland at end of 1983 so I missed that gig, but saw oils twice in 1985 Australia 🇦🇺
The entire concert is incredible.
Australian musician John Butler said that The Oils go on stage like they’re going to war.
I saw them on this tour, fucking life changing. They set the bar very very high…
If you wanna learn all about them there's a new 100 minute doko on them coming out soon (Midnight Oil: The Hardest Line) - just premiered at the Sydney FIlm Festival - in fact the opening movie of the whole festival! Trailers on TH-cam already :)
Their album 10 to 1 is the best example of short form progressive rock you will ever hear. The perfect album
When the drummer smashes all those drumsticks at the end, he always in the pubs in the early days they would fly into the crowd so some people in the audience would take a prize home, i never was never lucky enough to get one, but the oils as we call them in Australia always blew the roof off when ya saw m play.
The dancing style and Pete Garrett’, who is also affectionately known as, is known as THE DANCING EGG🤘🇦🇺🤘🇦🇺🤘
Seriously, just watch the whole concert! “Oils on the Water” is one of the best concert videos of any genre (and I’m a metalhead too).
fucking right !
The Wanda Beach show too.
Goat Island.
Jools Holland.
There should be a box set of their greatest live shows.
We used to call his dance the stomp in the 60s surf music craze but Peter takes it to whole new level . I would have liked to have seen him at official parliamentary do's when he was the minister for the environment .
3am can't sleep...now there's no hope..blood circulating too fast now!!
Great band, awesome performance!!

"That is Legit!"... totally agree😍
I was at that concert. Escaped from boarding school to go. It was on Goat Island in the middle of Sydney Harbour, more than worth the suspension.
Funny you mentioned "Lose yourself". There is a live cover done by Casey Chambers a country artist. It's extraordinary.
I was at this one and I was at the Wanda Beach one in 1982. There was a vibe.
Agree with comment below... To get the full jist of this , please guys! watch the entire concert. I was lucky enough to see them that same year in Melbourne. They blow you away.
