A brief Bio for you: Tyler Joseph - singer, songwriter, keyboard, synth, programming, piano, guitar, bass, ukelele and production. Josh Dun - drums, trumpet, some backing vocals, drum engineering. They are from Columbus Ohio and are both self-taught musicians. twenty one pilots as a band was started by Tyler in 2009 and originally had 2 other members. They left the band in 2011 and Josh joined. First two albums were self-released/recorded etc and they built up a fanbase by constant touring and putting on a great show as shown in the Ode to Sleep video. They were signed to a record label in 2012 and released Vessel, in 2013, which the two songs you've now heard are from. Their breakthrough album was Blurryface in 2015. Subequent albums were Trench, Scaled and Icy and Clancy most recently in 2024. Common themes in their songs are mental health and faith, and they also incorporate an extensive 'Lore' and storytelling in their music. They are currently in the middle of a world tour, playing arenas. The fans are nicknamed 'the Clique' and we are a very loyal and dedicated bunch!

Mark Eshleman (better known as Reelbearmedia) is the videographer of this (and many other videos of them) He basically started filming every show and promos of Twenty one Pilots since day one. He started doing this as their friend, and now he's their full time videographer for all sort of things they do. Mark is somehow the third pilot.

Tyler playing Uke is most prominent in the Vessel and Blurryface albums, then kind of takes a back seat for Trench and Scaled And Icy, then makes a return as a baritone Uke for the Clancy album.

Pause as much as you want. First listens of TØP require pauses and replays to take everything in. 😂
Heavy topics with upbeat instrumental is the motto of TØP. 🤣
The drummer is Josh Dun. In the words of his wife, Debby Ryan, “his job is drum.” Also Tyler told him when they first started making music together to play harder and beat the about out of his drums.
Also, fun fact, Real Bear Media is their friend Mark who has documented them from the beginning and still does today. They’ve said he’s the third pilot.

Kudos for being one of the most active reactions I've seen for TOP. I'm loving it! Welcome to the Clique! With your enthusiasm off the bat, I recommend you keep in the album Vessel and continue through their discography in release order. (There is also the first album "Twenty-One Pilots" which does not have the drummer Josh since he was not part of the band yet). I think would really enjoy their progression and evolution in sound, while picking up on their themes and the story lore which starts in Blurryface.
The end of the music video can get me emotional. It's difficult to understand this song's messages upon first listen, but there is a lot of inferences that Tyler is talking to God and demons.
"I swear I heard demons yelling
Those crazy words they were spelling
They told me I was gone, they told me I was gone
But I'll tell 'em, "Why won't you let me go?
Do I threaten all your plans? I'm insignificant"
Please tell 'em, you have no plans for me
I will set my soul on fire, what have I become?
    I'll tell 'em"
So Tyler is telling the demons that he is insignificant, and he's can't do anything to interfere with their plans. He asks God "You don't have any plans for me, right?" Yet, at the end of this video, we have thousands of people singing his words at the top of their lungs. We know TOP's music has reached millions of people around the world, bringing hope to so many who have faced loneliness in their own struggles. He is certainly not insignificant, and the chance that the world could have existed without their music is a heartbreaking thought to consider. But the end of this video turns into a beautiful message of hope and victory over despair.

I used to go to sleep to this album, dropping into bed after turning it on. I’d get in at ‘up, up, up to the ceiling’, and it became this marker of my bedtime ritual. It kept me positive and calm. It’s been ages since I’ve needed such a long shut down, but this was the beginning of getting control over my nighttime anxiety. Now I listen to Clancy before bed, simply for the fun of it. As you get into more TØP and hear from fans, you’ll see just how much their music means to people.

Toci! Thanks so much! I think you have delivered one of the best ever reactions to Ode To Sleep! Please keep giving us long music videos like this! I know The Skelton Clique love to hear everything you think, evey pause is appreciated. I love that you are a musician and can share your knowledge, dreams, and aspirations. I am confident you will love this journey, and will love Twenty One Pilots!
Tyler and Josh are both self taught musicians. They didn't know there were rules when writing music. They just play what they want to hear. Tyler writes the lyrics and melodies, and the majority of production. Their first album under their label doesn't have Tyler in credits for production. But the producer Greg Wells later stated that Tyler brought in nearly complete songs and did ask for production credit, which he denied under advice of his agent. He admitted this was wrong. Tyler is a phenomenal talent. And so is Josh! He is an amazing drummer, and has grown so much as a musician with Tyler's encouragement.
I could go on for ever. They are very inspirational, always encouraging creativity from their fans, and advising us to follow our dreams. They are still humble, and down to earth. Their live shows are amazing! Actually, they just wrapped up the US leg of their world tour for the album they released earlier this year, and I confidently assert it's their best show ever! ❤

most oh their early sounds comes from the legacy sounds library from logic pro/garage band as he used a lot of the midi keyboard. During 2013 Tyler started to use a lot of presets from nexus 2 while live he played regular instruments. Nowadays its a mix of that and recorded instruments. Tyler its a very good producer and with Paul Meany (co-producer) make some incredible songs. One of my favourite albums its Trench, and the most recent one its Clancy.
    P.S.
The band formed in 2009 with Tyler Joseph and two more members (Chris and Nick). Then in 2011 Chris left the band offering Josh Dun (the actual drummer) as replacement. Some months after Nick also left the band and now they are only two: Tyler and Josh. The show you saw in ode to sleep was their first show outside Ohio.
Fun Fact! After remaining only two members, Tyler wrote and upload at their webpage a song called "Two" due to the insecurity of the band, because he thought they could not continue with only two

They use small stages and put them out in the audience, held up by the fans-huge statement of trust but their stans are like the Renegades.

If you're confused about The Basement, it's a section of a venue here in their hometown of Columbus, OH. The venue is currently called Kemba Live (name changes based on who their highest sponsor is, during the time this music video was filmed it was probably called PromoWest Pavillion or Communities Pavillion) which has 4 stages: a bar, The Basement, an indoor stage, and an outdoor stage :)
I also believe the second performance in the music video is also at kemba but outside? i could be wrong on that

Good morning kind sir.. loved your reaction to car radio of theirs and ode to sleep is another masterpiece. First song off their “vessel” album which deals primarily with mental health issues(car radio is also on that album). In this music video is hard to pick up on some of the lyrics.. for lead singer Tyler who has dealt with Mental health issues, morning time is good for him, and evening time is when all the bad negative thoughts would come into play.. opening lyric is “I wake up fine and dandy”. So at night is when he’s trying to kick out all those voices, he hears in his head. And that doesn’t happen until he goes to sleep and wakes up, hence ode to sleep. If you want to learn more about the duo and their music, I would continue going down the vessel album. “Holding onto you” or “migraine” would be my choices. Can’t wait for your next reaction. Keep up the good word

If you want to stay in vessel, fake you out, trees, and migraine are amazing, but if you want to hear other albums, Johnny boy, addict with a pen, and trapdoor, are my favorites from self titled, heavydirtysoul, fairly local, and polarize from blurry face, morph, my blood, and the hype from trench, good day, the outside, and no chances, from scaled and icy, routines in the night, navigating, and ATROFD (acronym), from Clancy, level of concern is my favorite of their singles.

Ok! I've watched a couple of your reactions now and I'm down for another journey through the TOP library. I started with Joe E Sparks going from the same naive start as you, to now being a full blown clique member and lifelong fan. His background is videography and offers some great insight to their videos. I can't wait to watch your journey as a musician do the same for us with the music. Start slow, take it all in. You're going to learn a lot, and just wait until you get into the lore! Just another level on top of levels. Let's go!

Tyler did NOT play the uke on this song, the white and black scenes are from other songs, and the colour ones are from ode to sleep. The song of the footage was Screen.
Some uke songs (i'll skip acoustic sessions and covers):
    Isle of flightless birds (LIVE!!!!)
    House Of Gold
    Screen
    Lane Boy (LIVE!!!!)
    The Judge
We Don't Believe What's on TV
    The Hype
    Nico And The Niners
    Legend
    Formidable
    Bounce Man
Next Semester (yes... they are ukes with pedals not electric guitars hahaha)
    The Craving (both versions)
    Oldies Station
    Paladin Strait
Honorable mention: Vessel's 10th anniversary livestream
Ok so Tyler is producer, singer, lyricst bassist, pianist, guitarist (thanks to Jack White he started to play the guitar because he gave them some as a gift), plays ukulele (soprano and baritone), keyboardist , and he did the studio drums before Josh came in.
Josh does the drums (very fundamental part for a two piece band), and now he does some chorus and plays some synths/pads.
Both of them participate on the songwriting and I'd like to say that if it wasnt for Josh, Tyler would have quite the band so its a very important person

Love your enthusiasm! We don't mind you pausing. I think its a necessity with them if you want to digest everything happening! Juxtaposing dark lyrics with upbeat instrumentals is a staple throughout their discography.
Holding on to You (original video and Live at Fox Theater as a double feauture??) would be awesome next!

First show outside Ohio, not the first one of their career (they had a lot of shows in Ohio before this). Tyler used a lot of backing tracks because there was just two of them. Locig Pro. Of course he has also real synths.

the rap verse where you said "won't tell you who i'm singing towards"? - it's a really deep verse but it goes so fast and it's a live recording so impossible to pick up on one listen - it's basically him talking about how he denies his religious beliefs in his music and how he battles with that

  • @zoator1910

The second verse is biblical as both Josh and Tyler are Christians. He talks about 3 time MVPing the crime of denying, as Judas did to Jesus. He then says hes afraid to tell you who he adores and won't tell us who he's singing towards, and that metaphorically he's a whore and that's denial number 4.
Since this was on his first album after getting signed to a label, I feel this lyric is an expression of guilt for having to tone down the overt Christian themes that are present in his earlier work in an attempt to reach mainstream success.

First off, love your reactions to their music, their artistry is top notch, but there is another side you haven't witnessed yet. the story/lore they tell.
i recommend going through just about all songs from them, but if you want a real trip watch these in this order.
I am Clancy (not a song, but worth the listen as it outlines the story, can be watched first or last)
    Heavy Dirty Soul
    Jumpsuit
    Nico and The Niners
    Levitate
    Shy Away
    Saturday
    The Outside
    Overcompensate
    Navigating
    Paladin Strait
here is a playlist made that has them in order, worth your time to watch 100%
