It might not be working because of the filter sucking in all the crab larvae. A sponge filter might be better for keeping the larvae alive

zoea need a kreisel tanks to do well, so even a sponge wouldn't work

I believe the life cycle of fiddler crabs prevents breeding in a small environment. They are meant to drift out to sea when larvae and when they begin growing their shell they drift back inshore.

@Christopher Scott, Here are some theories about breeding fiddler crabs.
    Prerequisite:
    A) Wide and deep container
    B) Air-powered filter
    C) Undergravel filter
    D) Sump container
You need to create a flood-bed set-up. It will contain three parts; Bell siphon, Terrestrial, Water. Section off the Bell Siphon with a plastic barrier. Drill numerous holes at the bottom to let water flow through. The rest of the set-up shall be for the Crabs.
You want the water in the water section to be able to flow to the filter easily. First, drill a hole for a Uniseal or similar with a check-valve. Lay down an 'under gravel filter'. Use a plastic Duckboard/Drainage mat. Place the geotextile fabric from the plastic barrier and across the full set-up. To remove the chance of contaminants entering this section. This creates the base of the set-up for later on.
For the base layer of the terrestrial area. Use Clayballs, Perlite, Sand (50%) and Gravel. Mainly to save on the sand usage. Use barrier stones to build height to the water section. This layer will be till the bottom of the bell siphon. From here, you will change the mixture to Gravel, Sand and Perlite. Build a slope from the water section till you reach a height of around 5 inches above top height of the Bell Siphon. The important point is to create a moisture gradient level between dry and moist. That can support burrows.
For the water section, since it isn't nature. A thin layer of sand like you currently have. On the wall furthest away from the terrestrial section, add a slanted white mesh and stuff a lot of Salt Algae etc behind it. Light it up with blue/red LED strip during night hours. This should hopefully prevent the crabs from picking it clean.
The sump should ideally be the same size so you can stand the existing enclosure onto it. Using a small aquarium pump, it shall push water back into the set-up above, into this Under gravel filter section. Causing the water to rise slowly from below. Till the bell siphon kicks in and drains the enclosure quicker than the aquarium pump can re-fill it. A slow rise, a quick drain.
After that, a simple sponge filter of some sort. That will be the main filter.
Sure, it will be hard to break down once breeding activity happens. But I think, this is the only way to have any Chance of success. After that, it is just a waiting game since they need to build comfort with the set-up etc. But I think the only way to succeed with animals like fiddler crabs and similar animals that live on 'coastlines' is to have a Bell Siphon set-up to create a rise and fall of water level.

You say it's impossible... so how about replicating tide pool and or Brackish mud pools? Find a gigantic bin, fill the bin with brackish mud. Which you can find and or make and as long as there is atleast 10-15 inches of mud they should breed due to making burrows, but you can also try and find a pump that can replicate ocean water movements, I know they have made a few by a few aquarium companies, it's difficult but it'd be a better way to help them breed, you can transfer them between bins and see what happens.

It is very difficult to replicate the natural environment of these animals. Mainly in relation to moon phases, water salinity, and food. In nature they do not live very long, in aquariums, much less. Captive breeding is easy, the problem is keeping the larvae alive (There are techniques for this, but it's very complex to explain)

Hi Chris! So.. I want to keep some wild saltwater crabs as pets but I have some questions first,
1: I live right next the the ocean so can I use the ocean water for the tank? When I do a tank cleaning I can just walk down to get some clean water.
2: I'm no crab expert and I don't know any types of crab so I don't really know if I should provide all water or all land or half water and half land.
3: the crabs I'm planning on catching are small and I find them under rocks, do they need a filter or do they breath air or what?
    Please respond, thank you
