I love sabers, they're some of my favorite types of swords especially the thick and heavy ones like the polish saber in the video! I have always wanted to know how a duel between someone armed with a norman broadsword and someone with a saber like the one in the video would look. The ways one fought using these swords were fairly different and I'd really like to see a comparison and duel some day
This polish saber is known as hussar/mount saber. Longest which was used, and mostly was used on horseback. Notmal dueling sabers was a little bit shorter. The most known dueling saber in poland was karabela.
Fun fact the name saber is come from its hungarian name Szabja meaning to Cut. The first Hungarian sabers has less curve and had an axe head wich means the tip of the blade was heavier the drag the sword forward and for higher impact and also had a short edge on the top back of the saber. Sabers in poland comes along with the Hussars wich was the hungarian chivalry units implemented in polish army under the personal union of Poland and Hungary. The very first Sabers date back in th 8th century with the Avars and at that time it had almost no curve.
I personally prefer the curve in a saber as long as it's not too crazy, but there are some VERY effective straight blade sabers too that will make every bit as devastating a cut as the curved blades will.
And you and I actually got to fence this matchup at Schnegel! I was completely unfamiliar with dueling sabers before our fight and quickly figured out why they're referred to as such lol. I definitely enjoy the Polish saber style but it was really difficult to cover the distance and speed the dueling sabers had against me, honestly it felt more akin to facing a rapier. Great fights though and looking forward to more!
Okay! I couldn't tell from the other comment which match this was, but now I totally remember! I was a really fun match, and I love your Sigi saber! I think yours is somewhere in between two dueling saber in a cavalry Sabre. The dueling saver is quick, but it can get beat around if you let it. So got to go fast 😂

My favorite curved sword would have to be the pulwar, which is similar to that Polish saber, but longer and with a much more exaggerated curve. Deadly weapon on horseback

That's why they were often used for cavalry. They're a really good well rounded weapon. I also like cutlasses which are pretty much just a short variant of the saber.
im a big fan of mid 19th century military saber. i just really like the mix of cut abd thrust work in it, and the (infantry at least) sabers have this great median feeling to them. heafty enough to cut more then decently and take a beating in a bind, but also often with a nice spear tip with a false edge, minimal curve, and a nice weight distribution for nice pointwork. its my Goldilocks choice. not too x, not too y, but just right.

However, putting it as "just a copy" is ignorant. The characteristics of that specific type of saber deviated in other directions because of the context in which it was used and personal-regional preferences. For example, the preference for a thumb ring, or a straight pommel. That also goes for the fencing style. Rounding up: yes, they are variants of the same saber type, but far from considering those differences unimportant, I take them as crucial and very interesting testaments of history and culture. Trying to decided which country is more sabery is out of topic.

Ive been told by certain hema practitioners that there is no such thing as 'polish sabre' per se, as there are no surviving sources of it having been a unique or existing style of its own, and that what is currently practiced under the term of polish sabre is really just a modern theoretical interpretation of what mightve been.

What you are holding in your right hand is not a duelling sabre, this is a common misconception steming from Hutton and other contemporary Brits being idiots and knowing very little about Italian sabre, usually talking about "continental sabre", whereas sabres in Europe were wildly varied at the time. That is an Italian (Radaelli style) fencing sabre, Italians were well known for using lighter practise sabres than anyone else in Europe, their dueling sabres (sciabola da terreno) were actually rather heavy at about 800g and their military swords were not particularly heavier or lighter than other counterparts Also Polish sabres like that were well spread from 16th to 18th century tbh and were both a cavalry and infantry weapon since there is no really standardisation of sabres to speak of at that time Cheers :)
Just to broaden view on polish sabers: yes, they were used on foot and from horseback and there was no standardisation of sabers at that time but lighter ones were used on foot and heavier ones mostly from horseback.

As someone new to sabers, and hema in general, (im a FMA Practitioner) what are some great historical dueling manuscripts you can suggest? And to me, this kind of seems like a dumb question, but what is the practical application difference between a saber, whether Polish or Italian, and a cutlass?😅

Why didn't they make better hand protection for polish sabers ? Is it because of the weight ? Or because it would reduce the maniability of the saber ?
It's fencing style. High mobility in the wrist and avoiding bind to slide actions (from tip to hand) in favour of deflections. Also it's much more convenient to carry than basket type hilts. And it's also cultural, Slavs and Turks and Mongols have long history together. But there is a big elephant in the room, we don't really know much about polish fencing style as there are little to no written sources on how exactly saber was used but I'm inclined to speculate it was mainly a slashing and chopping for both offence and defence, paired with many options for offhand. Meaning whatever suits your purpose: grab with bare hands, bonk with a mace, stab with a knife, don't use off hand at all (especially in duels when you want to show off your swordsmanship), anything goes. I base it on knowledge Poland had a lot of Asian influence but also was interested in Western styles, especially Italian. Also, knucklebow is easy and cheap to make while it gives you a lot of protection when used properly. And last but not least, you can punch with it pretty hard.
I am no expert but it looks like an early Polish-Hungarian saber, on the model of which hussar saber was later created. I have been training Polish-Hungarian saber style for some time and it is really fun!

But thanks for pointing that out, you are absolutely right :) After all, the Hungarian saber was the first, it was us who 'borrowed' the design. I'll make sure to properly name this weapon in the future :D

My Personal favorite type of swords are the scimitar espacially the persian shamshir, which i grew up with learning to use for martial art duels
