I first watched Ted Hawkins on an Australian TV show hosted by Steve Vizard and was instantly captivated. Bought every album I could find. I was saddened by the news of his death. While there is an outlet for his music and people continue to enjoy his performances, he will live on. RIP Ted Hawkins. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
What an amazingly talented man, what a voice! Thx for sharing this vid. Im sorry I missed him. Enjoy Ur vacation Ted... we miss U! Thanks for all the joy U brought!
This is just how i remember Ted Hawkins when i was out at Venice beach back in 1990 when i was out there for 6 weeks. Just taking in the sights, heard this singing, approached and saw him sitting on a milk crate with his guitar case open, tapping his left foot as he sang. Man, people had the same reaction i did, stopped in their tracks and were hypnotized. I will never forget the experience, bought a cassette tape he had there, and have been a fan ever since. I had a VHS tape of him in which some notable people spoke highly of him, people like Harry Belafonte, Mavis Staples from the Staple Singers, and a few others. I was saddened to hear that he passed away in '95, on Christmas day i believe. You had to be there to really hear the purity of his voice. Rest In Paradise Ted.
Thecla Walta this probably was shot on promenade 3 Rd street , Santa Monica .ca I was there n saw him perform in the street on weekends ,,,very very sad he died of a heart attack after he got discovered by a big record company .
His voice and his songs were pure. He was a vagrant and loved the blues. This is one of those artists suffering for their art stories just like Basquiat or Bukowski. This man died to give us his art.
Theres a book coming on this great man! I hear his son tells some shocking interesting things! Ted was a privet person so i think it will be a good read.
I’m not sure but the title of the video might be referring to the Chicago Blues Fest. Here’s an image and story from a photographer who was there. There’s a photo of Hawkins in what looks to be the same striped shirt. There’s probably better evidence out there like an official concert lineup but I couldn’t immediately find it. www.briancadephoto.com/blog-2/2020/1/1/road-stories-my-first-paid-live-gig-pt-1-of-2
This was recorded in Grant Park in downtown Chicago. He wasn't on the lineup with the large acts on stage. He just opened up his guitar and a crowd gathered around.
