Saw these and was waiting for your review. I mainly play shooters so I was originally thinking of the open back version. Ordered the closed back in white instead so I can't wait to get them.
I bought the AIR open back version. Light, comfortable. The ear cups are about a 2/3 the size of AT M50s. The cloth felt good. I hated the sound on the first day, so I played pink noise through the motherboard for about 20 hours straight. Then that sounded a lot better. Neutral sound for gameplay. Nothing too crazy. Boring for music. The plastic is so thin, you can hear it from any head movements. If the ear cups were bigger and the plastic was thicker, I’d main them. But I returned them. Maybe next time Audio Technica…
@@jcap8391 Correct. Specs wise it shouldn’t have. I returned them after a week. I moved on to Epos for a gaming headset. If you’re using a phone for music playback, try a cheap usb dac/amp dongle. It’ll help give headphones more volume and punch. But if you had them plugged in a motherboard, that’s probably as good as they’d be.
I personally don't like the "gamery" aesthetic that most headphones have, which is why I have the pc37x, but they are showing some wear since I've used them almost every day for the last 5 years. These are a top contender for my next set which I plan on getting very soon. Its between these, pc38x, or another pair of pc37x
Just a recommendation personally I think the hd560s are just a better pc38x for gaming and music etc is doesn’t need a amp or sac but does benefit from one just a suggestion though
I main the 560s but I also had the 58x jubilee which are better than the 560s and pc38x in everything besides gaming it’s not bad the other 2 are just better again just a suggestion they’re all around the same price if I’m not mistaken
Video suggestion: sound leak with open headphones - there are *some* videos, but they are really old and subsequently not featuring newer headsets. I've recently bought the H6 Pro Closed after I've had the HyperX Cloud 2 for years. Because they - the Cloud 2 - were closed-back, I bought the H6 pro closed not realizing how big of a difference the ear pads make. I used to be able to hear myself perfectly fine but I just felt crammed & cancelled from the outside world, while both headsets were closed. Apparently the velour ear pads on my HyperX already gave enough air to be able to hear myself (instead of the leather on the H6 Pro - switching velour > leather on the cloud 2 indeed isolated my ears)... ultimately I decided to return it and get the open version hoping I can at least hear myself better now. I feel like this point gets overlooked massively, and potentially was also missing in your open/closed video - I'm kind off worried that I wont get *good enough* sound anymore for games since I do love to get into those FPS games from time to time and, like I said, that I will have massive sound leak but we'll see...
Nice to hear someone else bothered by the cable rubbing the shoulder! My hyper x alpha does this when I lean back. It's pretty irritating and also make cable scratch noise.

All the reviews I have watched about headsets today, and the one thing never covered is... Will a Track IR hat clip fit on it. Hat clip doesn't require batteries or an extra cable, and nothing to wear out or break. Mine still working strong for 13 years. Most headsets I seen, it wouldn't work (without glue it or something). These have the possibility, but I just can't quite get the right angle of view to see for sure. Thank you for the detailed review! These are sitting at number one of the list. Will update and let you know if it fits, if I get them.
I must say i ordered a pair of the open backs and you got the analysis on them spot on. Im from the UK and ordered it from japan as it was only place available. Will be going through with the return process unfortunately, i play a lot of R6 Siege and sound just seems to get lost on these even in a quiet environment. Its a shame as the comfort is sooo good. A little bit reluctant to order the closed back if im honest. Im currently looking for a clear headset that gives good positioning audio. I might try the audeze penrose again and do the earpad swap you mentioned either that or go back to HD560s which are pretty good but comfort on the jaw line is abit annoying. Great vid per usual ma man.
I like 60-70 ohm gaming headsets a lot more than any 32 ohm headset. I feel the resistance aids greatly to clarity, and if you need an amplifier just get a cheap dac to power them.
I bought the Open Back versions a week and a half ago. I have never used Open back headphones before. I also am very sensitive to clamping force. These dont have the greatest sound, its not bad but it isnt great. I am coming from the Logitech G Pro wired headset and I tried using that again the other night and I hated it haha. For most games, the ATH GDL3s sound decent - Guild Wars 2, Dyhing Light 2, Lost Ark, Ready or Not. They sound fine. I tried using them in BF4 and I didnt enjoy it at all - not sure if its me not used to an open back headset or if its them just not being good for that game. Just didnt sound right. I was going to return them but my UPS was closed so I decided to try them out. When I was at work one day, I played a 10hour video of the pink noise and they sounded a little better. Than the next day I decided to try playing a 10 hour video of dubstep and I liked them a whole lot more. The clamping force it perfect, the weight is great and the build quality to me feels really great. Especially to Razer Black Shark V2 wireless I tried a month prior. I wish I knew how to make them sound better for FPS. I am going to buy a dac soon. Ive also got a pair of the Drop HD58 Jubilees coming tomorrow for when I dont need a mic which is 90% of the time. I think for the asking price of $120 - $130, the ATH GDL3s arent a horrible offering. There is better ones sure, but I think they are a solid start. If they made a wireless version of them for $150 or so with a little more weight - not alot obviously - and kept the design like it is and include software with an equalizer, I think they would be great. Hell, if they had software at all would be great. I dont know of any third party type software that is good for that. But i do enjoy these headphones. I dont have an issue with the plastic on mine at all and I do not hear the cable a ton when it rubs against my shirt. I heard the cable more on the logitechs I have, but not by much.

I do better with the GDL3 Open Backs with CS and other games. Whenever I get new headphones, I tune them the EQ on Sonic Studio 3 so it cleans up what part of the sound I need for the game I'm playing So nothing sounds muffled here. Super clear and hear every footstep and get a good feeling of distance. Great for listening to music and watching movies and stuff. When you have a high enough bitrate and Dolby Atmos enabled (my DAC/Soundcard handle this), they shine.
I like open-backed headsets, but it sounds like it's not quite gonna replace my PC-38X. I use them for everything including FPS, but I think in general Sennheiser just has really good sound staging for directional stuff. I had a headset that put the cable on my shoulder and it drove me absolutely nuts, but seeing as that one's detachable you might be able to swap it out for an aftermarket cable. Maybe even ditch the microphone and use the Vmoda Boom Pro.
I just crushed my h6pros with my sit stand desk. They're super cheap to replace right now but I'm looking around at open back gaming headsets since I need to replace them. How do these stand up against the h6pro? Any other recommendations?

How does the comfort compare to the Logitech G335's? I really like ATH-GL3 but the shallow earcups look like a potential comfort risk for me, especially since I wear glasses and can't decide between the G335 or the ATH-GL3.

I've been searching for a good open-back gaming headset. I tried the PC38x and didn't understand the hype. The GDL3s sounded horrible out of the box. I burned them in for a bit and they sound a lot better. I don't like the pads though; they get hot and the build quality doesn't feel to great. The plastic creaks. All that said, this is the best option I've tried so far when in comes to open back gaming headsets that are lightweight and comfortable. I'm still on the lookout, so if anyone knows of any others I should check out that aren't ridiculously priced let me know!
By the way did you play any rock music on it? The mids are recessed af. The uncontrolled bass took over. Don't know why alot of reviewers said mids are pushed forward. Jordan from 9to5 toys was only one that said it sounded hollow bad in mids
The mids are strongest thing in these headphones (closed) , the Bass is very controlled, but the highs gets a bit muffled by mids leakage, playing a dialogue heavy game like Tales of Arise was a delight but I don't know how these will fair with Horizon 2 in two weeks.
I had a pair of the open backs and returned them same day. Not sure if my pair were broken or what but they were extremely bright. Like painfully so, I like having highs as well but these were painful in the high end. If anyone has tried superlux hd-681 or shp 9500 you'll know that those are bright in the top end and people usually EQ that out so they sound great. These were way way worse. But as I said, my pair could have been faulty so take this with a grain of salt.
Nope.. What you heard was normal.. But just the first 1-2 days.. You should have played white/pink noise for about 24 hrs straight... Then they are "played in" and sound waaaaay different than what you heard. You should do that with EVERY headphone you buy. It's a common thing and totally normal
I have ATH-AG1X closed back for my FPS ATH-AD700 and Hifiman Sundara for my environment rich games. I've tried MANY headsets, and I don't think it gets better than this
@@Hakim21070 I own the 700x as well. Open backs are unmatched when it comes to true atmospheric quality. The 700x sounds better than the ATH-AG1X, but it also allows important audio cues like footsteps, reloads, etc to sound further away and not as prominent. That's why I say that open backs aren't particular good for competitive shooters, even though they sounds better. The ATH-AG1X are the best closed back headphones I've ever worn. Tremendous soundstage and quality. And I've tried many headphones. I currently own 7 pair...but I've ordered headphones/headsets on Amazon and sent them back just to try them and make ultimate decisions lol. My next purchase will be the EPOS H6PRO
Don't worry they are super light so even though it has a lot of plastic it doesn't take much damage I have dropped my ath-ad900x headphones many times haha. Many more than I wish I did LOL

I don’t watch much esports, but the little I have watched I have never seen a pro using open backs on stage, also streamers, I don’t watch much, but the few I have as well don’t use open back. PS: I know it’s a hot trend that “gaming headsets” are trash, but honestly gaming and audiophile are two very different categories. We aren’t listening to smooth jazz, we are listening to guns and grenades.
Recently got the hyper cloud 2 wireless but they this static noise or white noise and the sound is really low too me also I’m also on ps4 console which they advertise that they work well with. So I’m getting a new pair soon hopefully it’s not the same issue.
Man I really hoped I would share your sentiments about these headphones, you made them sound amazing and I was super drawn to them even prior to watching your review. I must say, I am so disappointed. Of course it's subjective and that's fine people seem to love them and other than sound quality I don't like anything about these headphones. They're super light for sure but at the cost of them feeling really cheap. They don't fit my head nicely at all no matter how I adjust there just feels like there is this huge gap at the back and of the cup and it feels really lose like they will just fall off. Again its purely subjective and I thought I would just share my experience because I tend to watch review after review before I buy something when it is all just going to come down to personal preference, this is not the first time I've been let down like this. There is a reason why SS arctis and razer krakens or even the HyperX headsets are so popular because they are just simply good and consistent. I have a pair of the ATH-G1WL's, absolutely hate them. Sitting in their box in my closet. They sound great, when they aren't picking up static from my router or anything else that's on the same frequency, which is a lot. Terrible design for a wireless headset by AT. I replaced them with a $80 set of Logitech G series that maybe didn't sound quite as good but at least didn't have the static. I gave the ATH-G1WL's to my kids and even they complained about the static. They normally use $20 "disposable" gaming headsets for school and games. If you search the issue its very common and AT's solution is move farther away from the router...I'm now using a set of ATH-M50x's which I love (2nd pair of those, first lasted 5yrs), Have a couple of pairs of AT Bluetooth headsets for the Livingroom TV so I still love the brand but the first stab at a wireless gaming headset was a disaster and I would never recommend them. YMMV.
Just got a pair and I cant get the mic to work. I am using them on pc, I usually use an amp but ive tried plugging them directly to my pc as well with both cables. I can hear sound through them, but cant get the mic to work! someone help!
I'm having the same issue. :( This is driving me crazy. I just bought the earth model. The audio is working fine, but I can't get the mic to work on my laptop. My previous headset was also an Audio-Technica product and that one worked just fine on my laptop.

It usually happens much worse with a braided cable so it was strange to hear it happens with this rubber one.

Trying playing a song like my curse Killswitch engage. The mids are recessed af. The bass muddied everything up.

I had a pair of the open backs and returned them same day. Not sure if my pair were broken or what but they were extremely bright. Like painfully so, I like having highs as well but these were painful in the high end. If anyone has tried superlux hd-681 or shp 9500 you'll know that those are bright in the top end and people usually EQ that out so they sound great. These were way way worse. But as I said, my pair could have been faulty so take this with a grain of salt.
Nope.. What you heard was normal.. But just the first 1-2 days.. You should have played white/pink noise for about 24 hrs straight... Then they are "played in" and sound waaaaay different than what you heard.
You should do that with EVERY headphone you buy. It's a common thing and totally normal

I have ATH-AG1X closed back for my FPS ATH-AD700 and Hifiman Sundara for my environment rich games.
I've tried MANY headsets, and I don't think it gets better than this

@@Hakim21070 I own the 700x as well. Open backs are unmatched when it comes to true atmospheric quality. The 700x sounds better than the ATH-AG1X, but it also allows important audio cues like footsteps, reloads, etc to sound further away and not as prominent. That's why I say that open backs aren't particular good for competitive shooters, even though they sounds better.
The ATH-AG1X are the best closed back headphones I've ever worn.
Tremendous soundstage and quality. And I've tried many headphones.
I currently own 7 pair...but I've ordered headphones/headsets on Amazon and sent them back just to try them and make ultimate decisions lol.

Don't worry they are super light so even though it has a lot of plastic it doesn't take much damage I have dropped my ath-ad900x headphones many times haha. Many more than I wish I did LOL

Do the ears Touch the Driver in this Headset? I bought and sent Back multiple Headsets lately Last one the Phillips 9500 because ears sit on the Driver.. Sennheiser hd599 headband umcomfortable.. please Tell me
they do touch inside, but as seen in video there is a little flex in the cloth, so they don't touch the drivers but yes they do touch the cloth

I don’t watch much esports, but the little I have watched I have never seen a pro using open backs on stage, also streamers, I don’t watch much, but the few I have as well don’t use open back.
PS: I know it’s a hot trend that “gaming headsets” are trash, but honestly gaming and audiophile are two very different categories. We aren’t listening to smooth jazz, we are listening to guns and grenades.

Recently got the hyper cloud 2 wireless but they this static noise or white noise and the sound is really low too me also I’m also on ps4 console which they advertise that they work well with. So I’m getting a new pair soon hopefully it’s not the same issue.

Man I really hoped I would share your sentiments about these headphones, you made them sound amazing and I was super drawn to them even prior to watching your review. I must say, I am so disappointed. Of course it's subjective and that's fine people seem to love them and other than sound quality I don't like anything about these headphones.
They're super light for sure but at the cost of them feeling really cheap. They don't fit my head nicely at all no matter how I adjust there just feels like there is this huge gap at the back and of the cup and it feels really lose like they will just fall off.
Again its purely subjective and I thought I would just share my experience because I tend to watch review after review before I buy something when it is all just going to come down to personal preference, this is not the first time I've been let down like this.
There is a reason why SS arctis and razer krakens or even the HyperX headsets are so popular because they are just simply good and consistent. I'd go with one of those before choosing audio technica again, sorry.

I have a pair of the ATH-G1WL's, absolutely hate them. Sitting in their box in my closet. They sound great, when they aren't picking up static from my router or anything else that's on the same frequency, which is a lot. Terrible design for a wireless headset by AT. I replaced them with a $80 set of Logitech G series that maybe didn't sound quite as good but at least didn't have the static. I gave the ATH-G1WL's to my kids and even they complained about the static. They normally use $20 "disposable" gaming headsets for school and games. If you search the issue its very common and AT's solution is move farther away from the router...I'm now using a set of ATH-M50x's which I love (2nd pair of those, first lasted 5yrs), Have a couple of pairs of AT Bluetooth headsets for the Livingroom TV so I still love the brand but the first stab at a wireless gaming headset was a disaster and I would never recommend them. YMMV.

Just got a pair and I cant get the mic to work. I am using them on pc, I usually use an amp but ive tried plugging them directly to my pc as well with both cables. I can hear sound through them, but cant get the mic to work! someone help!
I'm having the same issue. :( This is driving me crazy. I just bought the earth model. The audio is working fine, but I can't get the mic to work on my laptop. My previous headset was also an Audio-Technica product and that one worked just fine on my laptop.
