I watched this back to back with a 1943 performance of the same tune, only with Buddy Rich playing with Tommy Dorsey. It's amazing to watch Buddy in 1985 playing with the same speed and power that he did 42 years earlier.

Man, I wish TH-cam had a "two thumbs up" or even higher to click on. This is the best performance I ever saw Buddy play on Johnny's show. So fantastic!

So cool to watch Buddy apply his very evolved playing concept to a chart he originally played on smack in the middle of the swing era.

Doc & Snookie sound great too, as well as Buddy's drums being tuned and mixed right. This was definitely an on night.

I always get a kick out of watching Conte Candoli's reactions to Buddy's playing. He obviously loved watching Buddy and never failed to point out to his fellow trumpeters just how much he was enjoying the performance.

As brilliant as he was, this wasn’t his best performance by quite a margin ..
Still the best that ever played though ..

Drum key: use it to tighten the heads on your rack tom. That way it doesn't sound like a total piece of dung.

Today's late night hosts would do well to study Carson and not be political activists

Ain’t that the truth! Unfortunately, the current ones don’t care whether they alienate & lose half their audience. None of them are worth watching anyway.

Carson's monologues were just as political as the current late night hosts.

@@stevefowler5970 you can't be serious! The talk show hosts today essentially spew the lib talking points verbatim. Carson went out of his way to be non political.

Barry King They are not "talking points", they are just telling the news comically. You just feel attacked cause you are on the wrong side of the street, that's all. A bit of self awareness is necessary in life. Find it before it's too late. Good luck.

Buddy, you look great - no he doesn't, he's an old fart wearing Sinatra's toupee, and he was gone a year later. Did Johnny put the kiss of death on him?

He outlived Bonham by 37 years now didn't he? Bonham was 32 when he died.

@Marcus Guzman There is no such thing as the absolute greatest rock drummer or the absolute greatest jazz drummer. There are many and I'm influenced and respect both of them. My comment was in response to an idiot that was talking about Buddy's age and that idiot had a youtube handle that was something to do with Bonham that he since changed. Trying to compare a drummer like Bonham to a drummer like Rich is like trying to compare apples with oranges. If you want to see novices commenting just go onto any great drummer's video and scroll through comments.

A terrific performance by BR! I think the band was quite in to it as well, playing with enthusiasm.
