The reason why Chinese parents are written like this is because most of the time they have just one child. That child is their dream and hope. All their hardworking is poured on that child. If it’s a girl, it’s double the amount of work because they believe that a lot of things can go wrong in her life. That’s why they are so hard on them but still spoil them. So it’s understandable that they are protective of their children. In this economy, will you see your child marrying a poor man and keep quiet?? She made sure that he was financially capable of taking care of her child before allowing it. Sure it could have been done a better way but the mum has a strong temperament normally that’s why she was so harsh.
That’s just my opinion on the mum though.
The only thing I didn’t like was how she talked down on the dad in the presence of the girl.
This is not a Chinese thing only. It is similar in almost all Asian culture's.
In my old world culture it was similar however in today’s world my daughter never married, has no children and doesn’t depend on a man for money. My mom taught me to never depend on anyone even if you’re married and I did the same with mine. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yep agreed. The mother is a hard nut. She sort of ruined her daughters life for 2 years just because she couldn't stand future son in law and just wanted her iron way. The writing in this drama was a bit way of on that point and could have been handled better. A bit of a disappointing plot in a very wonderful drama.
I have watched a few Chinese dramas already and still cannot understand why there almost always is written into them a parent or parents that is always very unreasonable and that also has that kind of strong influence to prevent a marriage. Really makes me wonder about what the point of this type of story telling is about? What type of indoctrination are they trying too achieve?
