    When you impose a 450% tax rate and it actually works

    • @raider968
      @raider968 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      It makes perfect sense. 450% tax rate means you pay taxes that are 4.5 times your annual income. This means that you will owe the government money every year. This debt accumulates and you'll eventually become enslaved by the debt. When the whole elven empire is enslaved to the government through debt, its no surprise that the player (aka government) can generate so much income.

    • @exantiuse497
      @exantiuse497 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's not 450% tax rate, it's +450% tax income compared to the base. If a country's economy expands 450%, then its tax income also increases by 450%, whether the tax rate is 1% or 100%. The entrepreneur expands the realm's economy by starting and improving businesses etc, and that economic growth is reflected on the tax income. Why would an entrepreneur increase the tax rate anyways? A character that does that would be called tax collector or something

      Quite unfortunate is that the longer I hold the Empire, the faster my bank account grew. The faster it grew, the faster my interest grew.
      Soon after it gets to the point that I would consider it cost effective to throw stacks after stacks of army to autoresolve on legendary difficulty, than to actually be bothered to fight the battle. A steady stream of army stack are always on the march, all the way from London to Jerusalem, to be fed to Sassanid.
      Once got a brilliant Sassanid general destroying 5 of my army stack in a turn, I can only imagine his horror when the news that 5 more legion just reach Sassanid border arrives him.

    • @alnoso
      @alnoso 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      basically everyone who's a bit older and played videogames in their youth knows what a signed integer is tbh, alongside other realities of programming a game. since games used to be so limited, developers would bump into limits like these all the time, and they'd let people know most of the time, or video game magazines/journals would look into it and tell everyone. especially when 8 bit was a common thing.
      it used to be pretty easy to explain things like this, for example with the civilization gandhi overflow bug, oh well the game can't store negative values here so the -1 aggression rolls over into 255 aggression which gives gandhi over 100% chance to launch a nuke or whatever. nowadays, a bug in a modern game will probably need the reader to go through 5 paragraphs and have a basic understanding of computer science to understand what the fuck happened, so the devs usually just go "fixed da bug" instead of "fixed an integer overflow that would kill the player when healed above 255" or whatever. unless it's a source game, in which case the bugs usually are map related and can be fixed by adding another player clip or moving the random model of a tomato someone put in there 10 years ago a bit to the right so the game stops crashing

    for those of you that are interested in computer science. if you have a 32 bit integer, then the first bit is used to determine if a number is negative or positive. If the positive number exceeds the 31 bits that you can store it in, then it will become a 32 bit number, which then results in the first bit of the number becoming 1 and the number becoming negative.

    For Empires Great Britain, you forgot probably the most important thing (and also the big thing that differentiaties them from the spanish): Taking enemy ships.
    GBs starting fleet is more than enough to take on france and spain, and you can just take their ships and sell them for thousends of coins. This is exspecially true for spains fleet of Galleons: They have shorter range than most other ships and are worth an absolute crapton while beeing extremly weak. One british Frigate can capture 5+ galleons in a single battle without breaking a sweat.

    Ironically, I think Ma Teng actually starts with poor background, reducing his estates income at the start. By contrast, somebody like Yuan Shu or Yuan Shao actually starts off with a lot of potential money through their wealthier family background. Yuan Shu can lose all of his settlements and still be in the green. But Ma Teng's ridiculous upkeep reduction from cavalry does warrant his position here lol, albeit probably not at the start of the campaign.

      In my first succesful campaing I was playing vortex as Last Defender, and went north with six armies after conquering all of the SoutherLands. I was prepared to the ultimate fight against elves (I know Tyrion had the sword of Kahine, and thus he'll be like a killing machine in melee). So I landed, after eating Sartosa Pirate's island. They did not react. I conquered a settlement. They did nothing. I conquered all the eastern provinces of the island (except the inner ones). They did not react. Then, Naggarond sent an army to the Kahine Shrine, where I was sieging. Tyrion came screaming like a madman charging with 4 armies, completley ignoring me.
      I suppose he doesn't give a fuck about settlements, he just care of delating the Dark Elves from the world. *FUCK YOU MALEKITH*

    Well Merchants aren't bad, because hiring merchant increases chances for you getting Merchant guild, AND they can be used to acquire other faction merchants gold (which is ussualy at least 1000 ducats, which pays back for the price of merchants). You can acquire assets reliably on enemy merchants by putting them on trade far away from your capital, so that they gain bonus ability points for being "gracefull travellers". If the difference of skill is about 5 points, you should ussualy get 95% chance of winning the competition with enemy merchants. Also let enemy merchant try to acquire your merchants early, so they get +1 point for "secure assets"
    Also few things :
    You don't want to hire merchants in lawless cities, they get "slightly crooked", aspecialy in thieves guild cities.
    Hire Merchant in big cities to get their skills high.
    Build a lot of economical buildings, and trade buildings for chances of hire skill of merchants.
    Build merchants in cities with merchant guilds.
    So yeah to get money from merchants you need to put some effort into it, but they can pay back. Main way to get money from them is acquiring assets from AI merchants (that's a lot of free cash, best send out your spies everywhere and search for any enemy merchants you can)
    As for England, there is slight advantage for England, when it comes to merchant, and that is, that if you put merchants in britain, AI won't send their own merchants to your lands, except for Scotland. And Scotland can be eliminated pretty easily. So if you put your merchants there, you don't have to worry about competition. However you ussualy want to send your merchants down into AI lands, to rob them of their goodies anyway, and high level merchants won't get competed out by AI merchants.
    So England isn't bad, you just need to use the fact that no one can compete with you, to your advantage - first use your starting area as training area for merchants (leaving them for a few turns give them up to +3 skill points or more, sometimes), then leave the island and start robbing the enemy using acquisition.
    That's what I managed to gather from my playthru using merchants ingame.
    EDIT: Merchant guild increases trade value too, so it's nice.

    Trade Income in Empire grows with the number of trade routes. And every single route is more valuable the more trade resources one has earned. Thus it is not recommendable to have just one route. One better opens as much as possible and even pays for them if the trade partner requires that. The more early one does it, the more profit it makes despite the costs.
    One can have at about 40,000 income yet in the early years as soon as the resources come in, and over 60,000 in the later years. Enough to pay for everything in the game and reduce taxes to 0 if one likes that.
    One should place as much ships one one trade spot as are possible with a resource price at about 16 - 17. This seems to be the optimum.
    The most valuable resources is ivory in the african spots, followed by spices. Sugar is the last priority.

    Getting your colony with Spain is way easyer dan with G.B. G.B. has no settlements in the americas excepted one in the north which is impossible to defend on very hard (excepted if you exploit the IA by giving unlimited military access to the Hurons) and then 2 Caribbean isles and you must organize a landing from there to the target settlements. With Spain the settlements are just some pirate islands and an almost undefended Dutch one (if you are lucky the Netherlands get defeated on turn 6/7 usually by France or yourself). Also how more trade partners you have, how more money you get from your ressources so it is actually interesting to have as many as possible.

    I think Zheng Jiang is a much richer faction than Ma Teng, certainly by the end of the game. Setting up all those tributaries gets you a LUDICROUS amount of money.
    it makes settlement management really easy too. Why bother specializing a place for Industry when you can build that building that increases your tribute and get another 5k per turn from that one building? Plus, Zheng Jiang has that building that gives her a faction wide replenishment bonus. it reduces that town's income, but that doesn't matter your income doesn't come from the town. Build food buildings after that, temples for public order, and you're completely set.

      Now; the US started to get in trouble after that; so I let them rot, and focused on building a small; but effective army on the side, with many cav units. Then; I "stealthed" through the french territory towards the spaniards. They did NOT see it coming; and I was at the gates of New Mexico when their first resistance showed up. After capturing that though...DAMN.
      The money I was making was ridixulous. My shitty native huts and tents; my low tier units; had NO cost compared to what New Mexico pumped out. After that; I conquered middle america and the north of south america without much resistance; and with Panama in my hands; I made almost 30k per turn. Absolutely ridiculous.
