@@LadyIarConnacht I don't think it is meant to be taken in the 100% literal definition. If I'm not mistaken the beating of Rodney King was one of the major influences for this song. There were no burning crosses at his beatdown. I feel burning crosses is more likely a metaphor for racism, or in this song, about oppression and hate of the common man by the powers that be in general. Also as you know Rodney was not killed. The "killing" in the name part is likely also a metaphor for abuse of power, violence, oppression, etc. (and sometimes killing as well). As to who is doing the "killing in the name" recently, I would argue that Trump's gassing of the protesters outside the White House for his Bible photo op a few weeks back is but one good example. George Floyd is another very obvious one.

One of my more favorite RATM stories is when they were invited onto BBC radio to preform this song. They were asked to censor the song, which they did, until Zach De La Rocha decided to actually scream “FUCK YOU I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME,” on public radio for 30 seconds straight. This song was at the top of the British charts for multiple weeks after that performance.

I first participated to the pacific manifestations but the authority you do not have the right to express your opinion. But people continued because it wasn't a good reason to stop they never thought politics would order to shoot on civilians, women, men , kids , old people everybody, the police shoot like assholes thinking : the sheeps are under control. well they were so wrong.. I’m a gen Xer too and for me Punk and alternate rock absolutely shaped my world view. That anger truly was a gift. I still question authority. I home school my kids so they can question things. Watching Mr Video feel the song so viscerally was amazing. It brought tears to my eyes because I know that feeling! I just asked my mother to watch this video as a culturally important thing. She only listens to classical music. Watching you understand the lyrics as the song plays really brings home the reality of the situation and that it is not just propaganda. I watched this video of yours about 2 years and it touched me and I remembered. My mother was born during World War II, central California, white, military, and poor. I was raised to be compassionate and with the golden rule. Intellectually, I have known that black people are oppressed my entire life. I didn't even begin to actually get it until the events that led to the riots a few years ago. I wish I had a deeper Revelation to share with you. I just want you to know that we're trying and that you help. Edit again: I was raised in Tucson which is 72% white. During the riots I lived in Vallejo which is approximately 1/4 black 1/4 Hispanic 1/4 white and 1/4 Asian. It was enlightening to say the least. I'm a grandma in my 50's. I give no fucks. When I play RATM, everybody knows I'm playing RATM. In my car, screaming "FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!" and the grandkids in the backseat asking why I'm so mad lol. It's Rage. One can't help oneself. This stuff woke me UP to the injustices being suffered by so many in our community. It woke me up to the fact that this nation is built on white supremacy. That white culture in America is white supremacy. It's built in. Even though all of us who rocked with Rage all those years ago are older, the message is still relevant and this bands music becomes a teaching moment for the next generation. I'm so glad you had the lyrics for this one.
It's shocking to me how well their message AND their music has held up since their first album dropped nearly 30 years ago. The sound is fresh and the message is maybe even more important and timely now than it was then. I remember seeing them live at Lollapalooza and having Zach de la Rocha yelling at the audience to NOT support the corporate oligarchs and their huge mark-ups on merch, ordering people to just take a marker and write "RATM" on their own shirts instead of buying from the vendors at the event, and yet they were SO GOOD that people were buying the Lollapalooza-sanctioned band shirts left and right. RATM was too woke for their audience then and may still be today, who knows?
Some of us were definitely more than angry enough. The problem was that there was no such thing as the internet and relatively few cameras. The white middle class refused to believe the cops were as violent as the poor (black, white, red, brown, pick a fucking color) had been saying they were forever. However, add a camera to every last person walking the street and a way to share that photographic evidence (the internet) and now EVERYONE knows what the cops do. Course, there will always be the Republican cowards faction that will tell you even a baby deserved to be beaten if a cop did it. For the rest of us, we've always been angry enough.
People burned down a significant amount of Los Angeles as a result. It's not enough to keep the outrage momentum going for a proper reform of the LAPD, but not "angry enough then" is a bit inaccurate, in my opinion.
Another important point, Rage ATM wasn't especially insightful. Everyone involved in counter culture movements already understood this shit very well. All Rage did was enshrine it in song. They did a good job of it but, as I said, it was hardly news to anyone that paid any amount of attention to what was happening. Even white folks - if they were involved, understood that shit was going on. It was the middle class that refused to accept it. And the ruling class that insisted on it - as a way of keeping us all divided. But, fortunately for them, the PC movement came along and turned ALL white people into the enemy of brown people with shit like "white privilege" and other nonsense that ignored class and poverty in favor of dividing us all up by race. The reality, however, is that a lot of white people - the poor in particular, understood from the word go that our fates were intertwined with brown people. We got that if any of us were to be free, we ALL had to be free. White, black, brown... whatever color you like, all of us, we had to be free of the ruling class.
I grew up in a very white midwest town. When I was 15, one of my friends introduced me to RATM (it was right when Evil Empire came out). CHANGED MY LIFE. They've been one of my very favorite bands for 24 years. They helped make me a better human. **Also wanted to say that if you haven't checked out their live performance in Minneapolis when they were here for the Republican National Convention, please do. The opening song (Bombtrack) they came out in orange prison jumpsuits and black hoods. Best show of my life.

I grew- up on this band! The 90's was full of activists trying to change our society. Being from a mixed culture myself and being Native American and Mexican indian on my fathers side along with African and french and then white on my mothers side, this band resonated with me because of all the bullying and racist actions I endured growing up by white people. Sad as it sounds that's the truth and how it was growing up in the 90's for me and a lot of other children of color. To love rage against the machine is understatement for me. Their lyrics still ring just as loud and true now as they did back then. I love seeing the new generation finding them out. I'm a mother and my boys grew up understanding and seeing the world for ALL it is. Through life, music and art. Keep the cycle going. Stay WOKE! One love and forever live on RATM!

@@LadyIarConnacht I don't think it is meant to be taken in the 100% literal definition. If I'm not mistaken the beating of Rodney King was one of the major influences for this song. There were no burning crosses at his beatdown. I feel burning crosses is more likely a metaphor for racism, or in this song, about oppression and hate of the common man by the powers that be in general. Also as you know Rodney was not killed. The "killing" in the name part is likely also a metaphor for abuse of power, violence, oppression, etc. (and sometimes killing as well).
As to who is doing the "killing in the name" recently, I would argue that Trump's gassing of the protesters outside the White House for his Bible photo op a few weeks back is but one good example. George Floyd is another very obvious one.

Being a government approved organization, does not mean God approved. You do not join a congregation to get to God, but you go to God first, then He makes you part of His congregation. The way of Salvation is easy, because Jesus accomplished all of the works, so the Spirit of God could be freely given to us, through the sincerely heartfelt and humble asking. Whoever wants mercy and forgiveness, even the Righteous Spirit of God, and the full payment of their sins will be given all, if they are willing to receive the Spirit of God through Jesus, and by calling on His name, and asking Him, God will honor the request of the genuine. To be kept by God for all eternity takes less than 5 minutes, and out of all the choices we can make or fail to make in this world, this is not the one to miss out on.
I’m a gen Xer too and for me Punk and alternate rock absolutely shaped my world view. That anger truly was a gift. I still question authority. I home school my kids so they can question things. Watching Mr Video feel the song so viscerally was amazing. It brought tears to my eyes because I know that feeling! I watched this video of yours about 2 years and it touched me and I remembered.
My mother was born during World War II, central California, white, military, and poor. I was raised to be compassionate and with the golden rule. Intellectually, I have known that black people are oppressed my entire life. I didn't even begin to actually get it until the events that led to the riots a few years ago.

Edit again: I was raised in Tucson which is 72% white. During the riots I lived in Vallejo which is approximately 1/4 black 1/4 Hispanic 1/4 white and 1/4 Asian. It was enlightening to say the least.

I'm a grandma in my 50's. I give no fucks. When I play RATM, everybody knows I'm playing RATM. In my car, screaming "FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!" and the grandkids in the backseat asking why I'm so mad lol. It's Rage. One can't help oneself. This stuff woke me UP to the injustices being suffered by so many in our community. It woke me up to the fact that this nation is built on white supremacy. That white culture in America is white supremacy. It's built in. Even though all of us who rocked with Rage all those years ago are older, the message is still relevant and this bands music becomes a teaching moment for the next generation. I'm so glad you had the lyrics for this one.
Yeah, 11 years ago nothing. RATM was trying to warn us almost 30 years ago and we just weren't angry enough then.
It's shocking to me how well their message AND their music has held up since their first album dropped nearly 30 years ago. The sound is fresh and the message is maybe even more important and timely now than it was then. I remember seeing them live at Lollapalooza and having Zach de la Rocha yelling at the audience to NOT support the corporate oligarchs and their huge mark-ups on merch, ordering people to just take a marker and write "RATM" on their own shirts instead of buying from the vendors at the event, and yet they were SO GOOD that people were buying the Lollapalooza-sanctioned band shirts left and right. RATM was too woke for their audience then and may still be today, who knows?
Some of us were definitely more than angry enough. The problem was that there was no such thing as the internet and relatively few cameras. The white middle class refused to believe the cops were as violent as the poor (black, white, red, brown, pick a fucking color) had been saying they were forever. However, add a camera to every last person walking the street and a way to share that photographic evidence (the internet) and now EVERYONE knows what the cops do.
Course, there will always be the Republican cowards faction that will tell you even a baby deserved to be beaten if a cop did it.
For the rest of us, we've always been angry enough.
People burned down a significant amount of Los Angeles as a result. It's not enough to keep the outrage momentum going for a proper reform of the LAPD, but not "angry enough then" is a bit inaccurate, in my opinion.

Another important point, Rage ATM wasn't especially insightful. Everyone involved in counter culture movements already understood this shit very well. All Rage did was enshrine it in song. They did a good job of it but, as I said, it was hardly news to anyone that paid any amount of attention to what was happening. Even white folks - if they were involved, understood that shit was going on. It was the middle class that refused to accept it. And the ruling class that insisted on it - as a way of keeping us all divided. But, fortunately for them, the PC movement came along and turned ALL white people into the enemy of brown people with shit like "white privilege" and other nonsense that ignored class and poverty in favor of dividing us all up by race.
The reality, however, is that a lot of white people - the poor in particular, understood from the word go that our fates were intertwined with brown people. We got that if any of us were to be free, we ALL had to be free. White, black, brown... whatever color you like, all of us, we had to be free of the ruling class.
I grew up in a very white midwest town. When I was 15, one of my friends introduced me to RATM (it was right when Evil Empire came out). CHANGED MY LIFE. They've been one of my very favorite bands for 24 years. They helped make me a better human.
**Also wanted to say that if you haven't checked out their live performance in Minneapolis when they were here for the Republican National Convention, please do. The opening song (Bombtrack) they came out in orange prison jumpsuits and black hoods. Best show of my life.

I grew- up on this band! The 90's was full of activists trying to change our society. Being from a mixed culture myself and being Native American and Mexican indian on my fathers side along with African and french and then white on my mothers side, this band resonated with me because of all the bullying and racist actions I endured growing up by white people. Sad as it sounds that's the truth and how it was growing up in the 90's for me and a lot of other children of color. To love rage against the machine is understatement for me. Their lyrics still ring just as loud and true now as they did back then. I love seeing the new generation finding them out. I'm a mother and my boys grew up understanding and seeing the world for ALL it is. Through life, music and art. Keep the cycle going. Stay WOKE! One love and forever live on RATM!
