He was the kind of player where if you don’t understand rugby properly, especially the role of the forwards, then he wouldn’t seem like anything overly special. However when you do understand the fundamentals he really is something special
so i watched another player(cant remember who, but did a reaction to him), who is clearly great because he does all the basic stuff well, all the time. And thats what makes a great player!
@@RobReacts1 that was the Scottish flanker, i think' flankers, as i said, need to do everything and get involved in everything. so they need all the skills. We, in Wales, produce a lot of good flankers, but most are very good at certain facets of the game, but not everything. Justin Tipuric seems to be the nearest thing we have to a truly world class flanker. he'd make a great back, is a great line-out man and regularly has the highest tackle count, or almost. he's also a good scavenger, while McCaw was the best scavenger in the game, imo, which is a skill i neglected to mention, earlier.

When Richie McCaw was given his first cap the great All Black flanker Josh Cronfeld write an article saying how he thought the AB Jersey was being devalued because McCaw had only played 3 games as a senior (after school rugby), and many agreed. McCaw played the game as a total unknown, even the commentators couldn't get his name right, awarded man of the match, and was generally outstanding. Setting the tone for all his future matches, after that debut game everyone new who was Richie McCaw.
Part of the issue with understanding the laws of the game from some people commenting today is that they were not aware how offside law has changed since his playing days. The tackler was allowed to jackal the ball from any direction without going through any gates back then, but not now. McCaw perfected (amongst many other rules and techniques) being the tackler and then instanously getting on his feet and getting the ball so quickly that the other team just could not stop him. Either that or just making an impact having a go while being onside, and thereby the other teams has to contest and commit players and that means slower ball for them. That (those smarts and quickness of perfect technique) and having the mental fortitude and heart of a lion made him almost an unstoppable force on the field. A very clean player too in terms of no cheap shots. Most opposition players respected the hell out of him and just hated that he was so good.

Hame 2nd this year in the godzone race, one of the world's hardest multi terrain races running, kayaking and biking for 6days straight over mountains, through forests and rivers totalling 666km. Finishing off with a beer and a pie lol Absolute standard of success and mental fortitude in sport.
In terms of rugby greatness, Richie McCaw is it. There were players faster, stronger, more physically gifted. But nobody, no matter what nation, can match his body of work and consistency. The only player that comes close is Dan Carter, and those 2 played on the same team for over a decade. They are massive reasons New Zealand is the only nation to win 2 world cups back to back
Richie McCaw will always be one of the greats of modern rugby. Brilliant player, but also was probably the best captain ever in the game (except Martin Johnson, maybe) at getting the ref onside and knowing exactly how far he could go past the line and still get away with it.
Rob, as you found out during your test of rugby laws, every situation has many lines of offside. Most players don't know them all, spectators even less so, but there are players like McCaw who knows every every single one of them and has the spacial awareness to know when he is right on that line, but not beyond it. Referees enforce some areas stronger than others, McCaw was often penalised early in the game, but was a smart enough to learn the limits applied by the ref and seldom penalised during the rest of the match.
Absolutely a Legend in Modern game for sure. He is the best ever in our modern game.
As a player Mccaw represented Canterbury 34 times, the Crusaders 145 times, 148 caps for the All Blacks and 1 appearance for the Barbarians. During this time Canterbury won 5 titles the Crusaders won 4 title and the All Blacks achieved 8 Bledisloe Cups, 7 Tri-nations titles, 3 Grand Slam tours and 2 RWC titles. That's a total of 328 professional matches over 15 years. He played all his rugby in the province of his birth and for his country, with the exception of the one Barbarian game, he didn't head off shore chasing the money, which he easily could have done, and I don't expect we will see any player in the future do that.
It reminds me of Matt Le Tissier of Southampton (the team i support). He stayed at Southampton for his entire career and he is much loved and respected from the footballing community. Granted he didnt win many trophies. The best player to have never been capped by England

I was actually born in Hampshire and if my parents hadn't moved back to the Midlands when I was young I could have ended up as a Southampton fan myself. I do remember watching Southampton win the 76 FA Cup final on TV.

Messi is arguablyt he greatest footballer of all time, and has 175 caps for arguably a worse team, with 1 world cup. McCaw with two world cups, in arguablly the best sporting team of all time (so the calibre of competition for places is higher) puts him in the same league as the likes of Messi. Messi is a very flash footballer, McCaw is exactly the opposite. It's hard to find highklights for him because that wasn't his game, he rarely produced the 10/10 highlight, but he ALWAYS produced a 9/10 and I'm not sure if I can say that about any other sportsman? Not the fastest, biggest, strongest or most technically gifted, but damn smart and had an insane amount of heart. Playing trhe same position as him growing up he was one of my heros.

Yes. Richie was that good. In fact, better than that good. Always gave 110% from the first whistle till when the fat lady sang. His record is historical. His legacy in memory is incomparable and could mount a strong case as the greatest player to ever lace up a rugby boot. I'm Australian, so that means he is without challenge the GOAT. His greatest flaw - if we claimed him as Australian, NZ would declare war. With other Kiwi's like Russell Crowe, Keith Urban, Crowded House, Lorde, pavlova, lamingtons and others, it has only resulted in perpetual skirmishes thus far, thankfully. IMO, there are 2 players who stand out, in the history of the game. after the change of century, all the professional players of the world, were polled to find who they thought was the greatest player of the 20th century. they chose Gareth Edwards, the Welsh scrum half. so far, in this century, i'd pick McCall as the greatest player of all time. people keep saying that he was always offside, and the refs let him get away with it, but Nigel Owen said that they misunderstood the offside rule. what the No. 7 position requires is a player who can follow the game, all over the field, supporting their own players, in attack, tackling the opposition, in defence. they have to have the ball skills of a back, the strength to take on the biggest forwards and keep going for 80 minutes, as they are seldom replaced. the flankers job is an impossible one, as they're not as big as the other forwards, they aren't as fast as the backs, but they have to do both jobs. they have to be relentless, involved in everything, always in position where they're needed and the rugby brain to know exactly where that is going to be, and also be able to win the ball in the rucks, or, at least, slow down the other team's possession. imo, McCall is the best, ever.
Helluva player, one of the greatest of all time but my goodness do they try and play him off as a victim in the video. The guy did half of that stuff in a single game and got away with it, but when it got given back to him by god would the Kiwis act like a crime had been committed. One of the things that made him one of the greatest players of all time was his ability to pull ridiculous acts of foul play and get away with it 99% of the time. ie: his ability to almost instinctively know when the refs weren't looking and his ability to know exactly the right thing to say to a ref to just slightly influence him enough to get more decisions and softer decisions go his way.

MJ was the man and I'd loved watching him play. After his knee was destroyed he was not that dynamic again but was a tackling machine. RM maintained his level for years and years until he retired thats why hes the GOAT

Which is true, but he didn't do half as much illegal stuff as opposition supporters thought he did, and not stuff like this at all - the eye-gouging, knees to the head etc. Which is why the last part is also true - he was very good at influencing the refs, which is because they all respected him. Which they wouldn't if he was just out there beating players up like Callum implied he was
