Fun Fact: A superpowered Earth Bending Technique was born thanks to a little Math mistake when they wrote this episode. 400 years ago - 111 years ago for Aang - ~70-80 years for Roku = 200+ years old... It was supposed to be 300 years ago not 400 so Kyoshi ended up living twice as long as normal super old people instead of a slightly above average life span like Earth Benders tend to do.

Here is a basic run down.

All the bending arts are based on different styles of martial arts. I don't remember which martial art is which element off hand, but it's an easy Google search.
You are either born a bender or you aren’t. The element you can bend, if u are born with the ability, is dependent on which country you were born in. There are rare exceptions, but, for the most part, all earth benders are from the earth kingdom, fire benders from the fire nation, water benders from the tribes in the north and south poles, and air benders from the air nomads that have 4 temples one for each cardinal direction.
The big reason the fire nation is winning is because they are far more technologically advanced than the other civilizations. Not necessarily because fire is innately superior. The reason aang seems to win fights easily, especially early in the series, is because airbenders have been extinct for 100 years, so most, if not every person who knew how to fight airbenders has died by now.
I will reveal more as the show goes on. I don't want to spoil anything the show hasn't told you yet.

Bending always gives an advantage in a fight the same way any other weapon or defensive tool does. Does it automatically mean youll win if you have a knife and the other person is unarmed? Not necessarily, sometimes the other person can still get the upperhand, especially if they are very skilled.
