2 things i like to bring up in this episode before seeing your reaction. 1: because of spirit monster from the last episode, the writers had to come up with a way for aang to not just go to the fire nation and just turn into some giant monster. the general is basically the voice of the fans saying the show could end now if aang just goes for it. so the avatar state has great power but one really bad weakness. 2: when zuko and iroh go to azula's ship, iroh is wearing his armor to be prepared for a fight. its little things like that i really like and not many people bring that up.
Fire is plasma and Lightning is higher form of it. I think I wrote there are a lot of other forms of bending in ATLA and LOK. In this season, they deep more the concept. Anyone in the Fire Nation(who are good enough) can access to Ligthningbending but the royal family keep it from themselves.
I think you missed Zuko straight up stealing the 'horse' from the girl who helped them. Makes sense why you were confused about the disappointed look she gave at the end.
I think the idea is that firebending is less literal fire and more energy source which would include eletricity but energysourcebending doesn't roll off the tongue as well as firebending
Rich Rival Only the most skilled firebenders can use lightning. I think the reason the creators of the show made firebenders be able to lightingbend, is because in real life, in rare instants, erupting volcanos have been known to produce their own lightning.
I think it's because they're both plasmas. "fire" and "the four elements" are real world old school terms from like hundreds of years ago before science had really come far enough to know what they actually were. Today we understand that fire is in a state of matter called plasma, electricity being another type of plasma I assume lightning bending was probably invented just before the show started and the terminology hasn't evolved yet cause typically terminology lasts a long time to change. Fire benders are really more so "plasma benders"
To every bending form there are sub-bending techniques. Usually a small number of benders is able to learn them, because of skills, talent, the right mindset or something like that. You've already seen healing as a sub-bending technique of waterbending. Now lightning is a technique of firebending. (It will explained in a later episode how it exactly works. It's actually real life physics adjacent. 🙂) There are several other sub-bending techniques that will be introduced in The Last Airbender (and its spinoff show Legend of Korra).
In regards to Iroh's intervention of Azula's lightning attack, many seem to think Iroh redirects it. But to me, it feels more like a physical push of her arms to another direction before the decharge so it misses the target.
No he redirected it. It literally shows him grabbing her fingers with one hand going through the usual motion and form of lightning redirection and then the lightning coming out of his fingers.
