Its the first time I've heard Chick Corea playing a pop ballad. It's played more in his own style, his own interpretation. He doesn't really caress the song like a ballad but it shows his versatility
I saw Chick play this in duet with Bela Fleck years ago. Chick shared a story about how he was at dinner with Stevie Wonder and Stevie said "you should play some new standards....ya know....my music".
This is a most excellent study because you can compare the MLM transcript to the Hal Leonard songbook chart Chick is reading to analyze his ingenious approach. BTW it took a musical genius to write that song IMO! This song came out around 1979-80 but it still sounds fresh over 40 years later!
@@michaellucke2654 not only are you a legendary transcriber...you also have some amazing taste. Can AI even do what you do? also thanks for putting the chords in
Hmmm, I don't hear it, and it would also be physically awkward to play in his right hand. Plus it parallels the chord on beat 1 down a half step. And, by looking at the video, it doesn't look like he's playing it in his left hand either.
@@tedlabowmusic1547 Yeah totally. I definitely hear what you mean, and I am basing some of this decision just on the mechanics of playing it on the piano.
@@abc456fhe’s literally playing the melody 70-80% of the time. Everything is else is based on the melody. If you need the melody spoon fed to you at all times, with nothing changed harmonically around it, that’s a you problem. @JJR52 It's cool. I understand jazz enthusiasts don't consider anything other than jazz to be worthwhile music. The music each of us likes is a totally subjective thing. So I was expressing my opinion. You're entitled to yours. But just because I find this performance "too much", doesn't make me someone who needs to be "spoon fed".
@@abc456f I’m a music enthusiast. I love jazz as much as I love simple 4 chord pop, musical theatre, classical music, folk, gospel, indie, rock etc. Things don’t have to be complex to be moving, neither do they have to be simple. I’m not in denial that music is subjective, but that subjectivity is, in part, down to the depth of a listeners ear. Just because YOU can’t hear the melody in the very few sections that it isn’t played, doesn’t mean that this interpretation is less valid/ relevant than a simpler arrangement.
He’s gone and yet can still bring such beauty and joy to my heart!!!! Brand new to me. Gorgeous.
.......beauty and joy and tears....
I couldn't believe my eyes, Chick Corea playing one of my favorite Stevie Wonder songs? Thank you for the transcription Michael!
What a treat. Steve Wonder Chick Corea style. Thank you Chic RIP.
We miss you maestro 😢🙏🏼💯
One layer of genius (Corea) over another (Wonder). This is liberating ... this is double artistry!
Incredible version, incredible transcription
What a masterful performance. One of the GOATs of jazz, no question
Lovely performance, beautifully flowing and uplifting, Chick lives.
That man was such a treasure.
I am truly overjoyed. Wonder and Corea❤
We miss him.
Yes agreed ❤
I’ll bet Stevie loves this.

Michael, do you recall the source for this video? It looks like it might have been filmed in his house. A workshop maybe?

Bar 20 - 4th 16th - add Bb? between the Ab and the B natural? cheers!

No worries - I hear a minor second in there, but we all have different ears!

What is he reading?
Nice job on the transcription. I never did like this version, tho
His embellishments, though 'valid', lend an uncalled for 'hipness' that detracts from the rather simple message of the song. IMHO
It's OVER joyed not joyed ;D
I agree. Over- done. Makes you keep searching for the melody line, it's exhausting listening to this.

It does not add anything relevant to the composition
Just what we need. More relevancy.
Can’t comprehend what you say…
What is "it"?
But it does.
I think “it” is a beautiful interpretation and tribute to a beautiful work of art.
