    As a Cliftonville fan, I remember back in 1990 or 1991 a grenade was thrown at us ( spion kop away end ) at the old Windsor park ground during a match against Linfield, it exploded and a wee mini-riot broke out from a section of the crowd at the top of the terrace. After the scuffles & a bit of a baton charge by the police, it had all quietened down around 15/20 minutes before the focus was then turned back to the football on the pitch. The funny thing is that the match itself never stopped and continued on as if this was a normal crazy part of life lol.

  • @adamscott1738
    @adamscott1738 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Northern Irish league is just like the Scottish league. Teams only good against their own because of the budget and no recognition. It’s great seeing you cover Linfield and other Irish teams north and south, hopefully other people start to see the history of the league.

    • @Support-your-local-team
      @Support-your-local-team 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a bit disrespectful to Scottish football. Scottish football is ranked 11th in the co-efficient, Northern Ireland 30th.

    • @adamscott1738
      @adamscott1738 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Support-your-local-team Being that I support Motherwell mate I’m not disrespecting the league at all, also Scotland thanks to what only Rangers has done in the last 3 years is 9th. Compare the budget to winning the league 1st in Scotland took home £3mill and N Ireland is probably waaaaaay less. Also getting relegated from all top 5 leagues get more than winning in Scotland.

    • @Support-your-local-team
      @Support-your-local-team 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@adamscott1738 The old firm always make up the bulk of the coefficient points but actually the other teams have had an improvement in results too which have contributed. Nothing too remarkable but still some respectable results for the 3rd/4th/5th European sides in a small country. Clubs from lower ranked countries are always disadvantaged by the amount of qualifiers and the seedings but now that Scotland has moved up and the third placed team has European football guaranteed until Christmas it's a good opportunity. I know the reasons why N.I football is at a disadvantage and I agree with you, all I meant is I don't think their football is that much like ours.

    Brilliant content on this channel! But the only reason Linfield are so successful is because their biggest competition (Belfast Celtic ☘️) were forced out of professional football due to violence from pro unionists and a player nearly being killed by linfield fans on the pitch.

      Celtic had money issues and also the board was at war with each other, stop spouting the myth...

    • @antonsharkey5258
      @antonsharkey5258 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@revsin1886 A quick Google search confirms what I and everyone already knows - it's true and that's exactly what happened. Boxing Day 1948, Celtic already champions of the Irish League visiting their great rivals. A few red cards for either side and a rough (albeit innocent) Jimmy Jones tackle on Bob Bryson added fuel to the fire. Then when Celtic equalised late on in the game, it happened.
      Uniformed RIC officers (who, as a police force are supposed to be neutral but as we all know, they weren't) threw their caps in the air at every Linfield goal, and allowed the invasion to take place. Jimmy Jones had his right leg completely smashed to pieces by Loyalist Linfield fans before one of his good mates had to throw himself 10ft down the stands on top of him to shield him. Jones had a promising career absolutely ruined by their mob.
      No suitable action was taken by the IFA or the RIC (of course it wasn't) and this appalled the Belfast Celtic board to it's core, so badly that a year later - after selling off all their key players - headed off on a farewell tour of North America and tendered their resignation to the IFA.
      Now I'm a Celtic fan so anything I would have added to that myself would be construed as bias, so I've left everything I've written almost word-for-word (again, a quick Google verifies everything I said - an article by the BBC is where this info has come from - the irony in that alone)
      So stop trying to defend the actions of this abhorrent club and it's fans - the memory of Belfast Celtic deserves better than to have people like you lie about what caused their downfall. It had nothing to do with financial woes - they were entirely let down by the unequivocally biased pro-Unionist authorities that were supposed to protect them.

      @@robertanderson2552 I agree with this 100%, the Irish League definitely doesn't have enough clubs that have their own identity separate from the political leanings that dominate both Northern Irish and Scottish football, which is why they all turn out to be "mini-Celtic" or "mini-Rangers". Definitely something we need in the league.

    One important caveat re Linfield's success is that the next most successful club, Belfast Celtic, were driven out of the league after their players were attacked(and one almost killed) in 1948 during a match with Linfield. At the time Linfield were 18-14 ahead in league titles but Celtic were the reigning champions. Celtic are still 3rd in the roll of honour. The same thing happened to Derry City in the 1960s. England manager Ron Greenwood had played for Belfast Celtic.

    • @bloodboughtbigphilr8266
      @bloodboughtbigphilr8266 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Derry had their sporadic shots at success as an Irish League club but were never the serious challengers to Linfield that Celtic proved in their relatively short span. If Celtic had lived on, the Blues subsequent trophy haul would have been reduced significantly. Indeed, like the Glasgow Old Firm, these 2 would have dominated the game in the North with honours shared pretty evenly.

      Windsor is only a 18,500, they could have made in 30,000 but it would have been more cramped and it only ever sells out for Northern Ireland games which are impossible to get tickets for now.

    Having our ex-manager Robbo and now Lasley St Mirren will do better this season. Robbo and Lasley are still highly regarded at Motherwell and if we were not up against Celtic in the two cup finals we should have won at least one

    Lindfield? Ah Poundland Rangers. Smashed them 6-0 in 2 legs and they where so scared they didn't have any strikers up.
    Most Successful pub league team maybe. NI football is nothing special and I'm from the North.

    none of these teams are telling the whole story, Rangers no longer exist as Liquidation means they are dissolved completely, as for Linfield, well they play in a Mickey Mouse league and never played in the European tournaments proper, they are a junior side at best.
