- I visited the Brandywell Stadium to watch Derry City FC take on Riga FC in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
The atmosphere generated by the fans was incredible!!!

Fairplay to the Derry fans, unreal atmosphere, the Drummers were superb! Another great video.
You were saying how Derry got in because they finished 4th. That's not entirely true. See, it's only the top 3 that get European football in Ireland. The only reason Derry got Europe is because a team already in the top 3 (St Pats Athletic) won the cup (incidentally against my club Bohemians), which normally would mean Europe, but st pats already Finished in a UECL spot, so the spot went to the highest placed club who didn't win the cup, in this case Derry

Pity that Derry couldn't add a third league of Ireland win in Europe this week, better luck next season if they can qualify again.
Now it would have been ideal if you were sticking around the see the second leg of say Linfield/TNS in the Champions league or even Sligo/Bala, sure we can't keep you on the island forever unfortunately ;)
Maybe one day you'll come down to see my hometown club of Waterford FC and all the other Munster clubs.
Peaky Bannsiders is the best promoter for the NI prem league. I support Cliftonville from the US but would have a soft spot for Coleraine because of him

Although not your type of sport entirely, you should visit Croke Park in Dublin, 3rd largest stadium in Europe, great tour and museum and unbelievable history. Plus you'll learn about gaelic football.

I love everything about Ireland and your doing the coverage real justice. You covered Institute in your last video and they are the protestant team whereas Derry City is the Catholic team. The division is so much that they can't even be in the same league system. This division is painful and has not gone away. Bloody Sunday in 1972 was an absolute tragedy where many innocent Catholics died for peacefully protesting. The Dubliners sang a very moving song that was politically neutral called The Town I Loved So Well which I would recommend a listen to. The Real Derry documentary and Derry Girls also helped me understand a lot about what life was like in Derry post and during the Troubles.
Phil Coulter wrote that iconic song, bud.
The Dubliners covered and released it in 1973.
@@AnnesleyPlaceDub70 I know Phil Coulter wrote it but he wasn't good at singing and was also the record producer for the Dubliners so kind of did it for them. The Dubliners didn't write any of their material just took others who couldn't sing material and made it famous like Luke did with this song. It was released on the album Plain and Simple which was released in 1973 but the song came out when it did as Bloody Sunday was particularly relevant.

Haha yeah some of the lads were telling me about that off camera. Wild that Gretna were in Europe not long ago but last season finished second bottom in the lowland league. A phoenix club of course but a wild ride nonetheless. Thanks for watching as ever!!!!

For anyone interested theres a great book called gunshots and goalposts that speaks about the history of football in the north of Ireland prior and during the troubles, would love to see the Brandywell one day.

Derry are a great club to have in the LOI given the passion of the local support, in particular, but what a hugely disappointing result for Derry. These are the games they clearly should be winning against similar quality opposition. However, as they say, it's still only half time so let's hope they can do themselves justice next week and put a bit of pride back in the jersey.
It's only half time boys and you can definitely still turn a very average Riga over next week. Go out there with a positive attitude and self belief!!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!

I believe the Riga fc Twitter account used a British flag to represent Derry rather than a republic of Ireland flag. The Derry city supporters were not happy so I guess used a Russia flag in response. Not a smart response considering current events.

Im a glentoran fan don't mean this in any bad way possible but i wish derry stayed in the irish league and not the league of ireland i know the troubles changed that but think of the atmosphere now if they joined back into the irish league with the games v Glentoran and linfield it would be cracking. And the crowds would increase also.
