I had a question about the "free" Philo TV. I don't see anything free. It's telling me to upgrade for $25. Where is the "free" content and DVR?

I've been subscribed to Philo for a few years. It is good for the price. No news, no live sports, no problem.
i will NEVER go back to comcast cable...many years of ripping me off when i had no choices or options...oh i remember...and i will always gravitate to the platforms that provide no ads at no additional cost...loyal to the best price never the company again

After fighting the AD blocker thing with YT I broke down and went Premium. Much better! It would be nice if we could pick our own streaming bundle, not what they pick.
I remember when TH-cam was free and no ads this was as like 25 years ago. Also peeps did not get complaints from You Tube for having music play on recordings.

@@phobicx5999no probably not. GE is their flagship product, made by Thomson CFE. The RCA name is now owned by the Technicolor Corporation. I really don’t think RCA makes any product on their own. RCA antennae are produced by the Audiovox brand.
QUESTION (FOR LUKE): The cost of internet goes up and up. I pay $100 for internet now. 20 years from now $100 will be consider cheap, twenty years from now I think it will cost over 200 for basic internet. What are your thoughts?
I got the email from Philo yesterday but was curious if it would apply to me. I actually started Philo when it was only $20 a month. But I see now it's only for new subscribers or those who choose to go the new route. Yah me!
I use TH-cam Premium. I get all kinds of movies tv shows and tv bumpers and clips. How to's about almost everything. and a bunch of nonsense if you enjoy that. Anything else is great if you want to stay current and keep up with the Joneses. But I love your channel. Very helpful Peace!
TH-cam and ad blockers haven't been an issue for me for a very long time. I've been a subscriber to TH-cam Premium for years. Don't intend to change that either.
The thing that local governments can do is lay fiber and let many private companies use that infrastructure to provide the services. There's no need to re-invent the wheel, especially when government handles services so poorly, and once you take out the big capital outlay, you remove a big barrier to competition and service out to the boonies. The companies just pay a flat access fee to provide for maintenance.
You may be right on how government handles service poorly however, in my town, the mayor is in bed with Comast and does not allow other companies bid for service, so when it comes to wired servers we are SOL. However, wireless we can still get.
I think TH-cam is making it harder to avoid ads. We must wait longer (30-60 seconds instead of 5-30 seconds) before we can "skip" to the end of the commercial.
As a side note, I believe TH-cam commercials are generally much lower quality and more irritating than ads on broadcast TV. 6:27
Just do a deep search on your browsers for extensions. You will be pleasantly surprised by what can be eliminated.

When I run into that 21 to 30 second first ad, I just hit the BACK button...
If the next one is also long.. hit the BACK button again...
and again..
Until I am served with a 5 second only Ad or the video starts.
Either way, a few hits of the BACK button and the video will start LONG before that first 30 second Ad would have been over.

Philo is doing it right, letting customers keep their original plan. I still only pay $20 for Philo. I hope they don't change that.

You just won’t get the AMC+ included but will remain with what you’ve had. So unless you want the AMC+ included, then it isn’t worth upgrading and paying $8 more than what you are now.
AMC+ on its own is just 5$ (with ads) so why pay $8 more when you can keep your price and get AMC+ separately for a couple dollars less than if you’ve upgraded here. Yeah, makes sense to keep what you got.
What do you think about the potential change the FCC is implementing towards net neutrality. I haven't heard you cover it yet.

The problem that I have with the Comcast's streaming bundle is with Netflix, I'm stuck with the base level plan. It doesn't (or have not seen a way) for it to offer 4k. That (in 2024) is a deal killer. Also in 2024, it's a travesty to pay extra for things that have become standard (4k, dvr, ect).

Thank you Cord Cutters News: Question. Since the Roku update, I believe 13. I am having problems with my sound bar/ speaker. When I am on the home screen of Roku, I hear muffled voices. When I go to a program it works perfect, also when I am just watching tv thru the antenna it works perfect. This only happens on the Roku home screen. No sound should be head at this time. This only happened since the Roku update. Thank you very much.
I found the problem. The latest update has as the default voice reading the screen on movement. I was able to turn it off under accessibility.

Would you address Turner Classic Movie channel. I cut cable years ago and this is the only channel I really miss. HBO/Max has some classics but the line- up really has not changed since HBO gave up the name. Some Reddit/X threads have suggested classics have some sort of copyright barrier that only allows certain ones to be streamed. The live channels do not have TCM and I don’t see it anyplace except cable. I would pay to have a live 24/7 channel or even a BritBox type channel. Any info would be appreciated.
I upgraded from the $20 plane to the $25 plan because I felt the extra DVR time was worth it. I've tried AMC+ in the past and really don't feel it's even worth the extra $3. I'll talk to my wife about it first though. You can currently record the free channels if your a Philo subscriber and skip the ads.

I'll never experience marketing videos on this platform due to their extreme censorship of many different creators. I supports creators directly. If this platform ever decides to be fair and pro free speech, I would watch those marketing tools or pay for YT premium.

YT and Adblockers - Yes, ads are annoying but they pay the bills. But why does YT stick ads in at the most inappropriate times in a video? That makes it really annoying. Some creators include spots for ads and sometimes YT's software uses those, sometimes it doesn't.
Municipalities Providing Internet - Not needed in my are (suburban Los Angeles) as we have tons of competition in cable/fiber, 5G wireless, and satellite services. It might not be appropriate for rural areas once you factor in update costs as technology changes. It might be better to work with a provider (or two) to provide wireless via repeaters on towers or utility poles; not the best for getting the highest speeds, but it'll work for solid internet connections.
Question for Luke: I wonder if cable companies all switched over to an all streaming service like what TH-cam, Hulu, Sling and Fubo provide, rather than the old fashioned service with a cable box and a physical wire attached. Would that stop the hemorrhaging of subscribers or slow it down?

Holy crap!! YT premium for me is only like $7. I do have a student discount but that’s still a lot for the service. My discount is looking better and better!! I wouldn’t even subscribe to it if I had to pay over $20 for it.

It is frustrating when I pay for the no add TH-cam plan and then the creator places an add within their video to make additional income. I feel like the creators are negating the extra money I’m spending for the no ad plan so I usually down vote those videos.
I wonder if the CCs get a cut of the Premium payments?
I suspect too many of them uneffically downplay the amount received, when it comes time to pay TH-cam a _fair share_ of the money from those ads.

Yes, they do. As a result, I wish TH-cam would start cracking down on that nonsense for Premium subscribers by automatically cutting that nonsense from the videos that they watch. It would be a nice benefit that a plain Jane third party ad-blockers coudn’t easily nor reliably match.
Here is a funny ad story. I have the standalone MAX plan which was like half-price for a year. This plan has ads, but I only get one ad OVER and OVER. Its an ad for some type of advanced Prostate cancer drug, that shows an older guy on a motorcycle. Its only about once per show but its ALWAYS the same ad. Always. I do use a advanced deep packet ad blocker (mainly for Web) and don't think that blocks streaming ads. If you block streaming ads, it just freezes and won't play, in most cases, so its not worth the pain. (They do timeout after like 5 minutes). Anyone else get these Prostate cancer drug ads on MAX?

Why are you calling it free when it's $25???
The free channels are extra specialty streams that aren't mainstream cable networks (the 24/7 "Ice Road Truckers" channel for instance). You'll still need to pay the subscription for more popular channels like TBS, TNT, HGTV and the like. There are some decent free channels although it's mostly secondary content.
I have all the ad supported streaming services, and they don't really bother me at all. I do deep Internet ad blocking which may or may not help with these, don't know, but the few ads I see are not bothersome to me. TH-cam is another story, and if I am forced to watch those ads, its Goodbye TH-cam. Sorry. These ads are extremely annoying, and I will not pay $13 to remove ads which is like double the price I pay for most streaming services. There is just SO MUCH out there, TH-cam is interesting, but not must-have for me.
I have nothing else to compare to other than TH-cam TV, because that’s all I’ve used for many years. I’ve noticed their User face has gotten less and less and less and is totally horrible. I want to look at the items to watch in an organized manner like a TV guide. I don’t want to just look at some little icons and no random order. I don’t know what the other Companies are doing now, but this is likely to my house

Free non live tv streaming services don’t need a DVR there is nothing on any of the channels that can’t also be viewed on demand a dvr is just redundant

@@JCourts2k23 the free streaming service like Tubi, freevee, Pluto etc all have channels but everything on them is also available on demand you can pause and pickup and restart anything you may be watching by watching the on it demand a DVR function really isn’t necessary when there is already a streamable version already there.That’s the main reason most don’t offer it. It sounds like this service may be offering actual live OTA stations and content so a DVR makes sense

I have TH-cam Premium because I think it's fair. I still use ad blockers, though. I could care less about the extra features. In fact, I find some of them annoying like the popup player to continue videos. You currently can't turn that off.

AMC plus is not free. You are paying three dollars for it.
True. With the increased subscription price you would be. AMC+ (with ads) is $5 on its own. So I guess this option ultimately saves people $2 in the end if they’re wanting AMC+.
If it’s meaningless to you then it isn’t worth upgrading. Or for those not currently subscribed at all and want to then y’all better subscribe by June 12 to get the $25 a month before the base plan increases by $3. Since the AMC channel itself is already included in the Base plan… I don’t feel it’s worth paying $3 more for AMC+. They don’t really have a whole lot of original content that can’t be found on the AMC channel.

I hate to deal with the screen saver. Also when first starting You Tube the full screen is just a small picture playing in the top left corner. No way to disable screen saver.
