Ninjas used guns: fact, probably the second set ever made.
Also a fact: medieval knights also used guns, the first set of guns in fact (blew up a lot)
It's not hard to believe any warrior in history at some point integrated guns into their warfare whenever they were introduced.

I mean, if troops go into melee, death is just so much more likely. This then wastes human life, as well as every bit of resources that went into those now dead troops. Alternatively, you have them stand back and pull a trigger because guns. Like, why would any sane person ever not just use firearms in warfare? The point is to win, anything else is an unnecessary and wasteful risk. Have fun with all that "honor" when you're lying in a ditch somewhere.

If there's any sect that should _not_ have "honor", it's the shinobi. Any other Snake Eyes would've picked up a mac from inside the tuna and make the Yakuza here look stupid.
In GoT, at least honor had a definition to Jin, and while he pushed past his uncles lines and abandoned the concept of honer, he never stopped protecting those who could not fight for themselves, as he says as a kid that's what honor means to him when Shimura says it's just a word.

Tangentially related, I like how in Batman Begins the very first time we see the League of Shadows, which is established explicitly as a ninja clan, they all have rifles slung over their shoulders. We do see katanas and black uniforms later, but that seemed mostly to be a "teach our students _every_ kind of combat" deal or during their League-specific rituals.
When they invade Bruce Wayne's home, they're all wearing expensive suits and modern hairstyles, no black uniforms or face coverings. We then learn their main forms of attack on Gotham were economic and poison, and to disrupt/kill Batman, they do what ninja do and simply commit arson on his "castle."
It's never noted, there are no lines like "you think ninja are only this way but we also use _guns_ and _social stealth_ too!" Chris Nolan just knew they were more than a fighting skill and a black uniform and that in the modern day a league of world-shaping assassins would look like other modern killers with modern weapons, there are no "tradition" or "honor" hang ups, just crime, loyalty and betrayal. And that movie was released 16 years before Snake Eyes. SE was truly behind its time.

So many of these reboots/adaptations just feel like they missed the mark from what they intended to do, or just aren't interesting. In more recent years having to be more reliable on popular media to get any sort of understanding about foreign countries, and we all know how horrible an example THAT is when portraying ANYTHING. However, having seen evidence in their popular media, I think Japan is making far greater strides to be more world conscious. I'm sorry Gaijin, but I have to disagree with you about the He-man revival on Netflix. Kevin Smith lied nonstop about the show being "all about He-man". It was never about the beefy women for me. It was the constant lies and crap. Evilin gets a lot of development but then throws all that away when her bone daddy comes back from the grave. Orko gets some amazing development but then they kill him off.
and whats even dumber is they kill off Adam, the He-man not once...but potentially twice. He-man, the guy who's NAME IS ON THE TITLE, only ever appears in the first episode and doesn't show up for the rest of the first 5 episodes. Its only Prince Adam in the final episode. (granted I did tear up when Cringer sees Adam after the boy returned from the afterlife, so good job on that).
If you think about it too deeply, it starts to get offensive considering the fact that Revelations is mostly about Teela and they slapped He-man's name on it, probably believing that a show titled "Teela and the Sword of Power" wouldn't be watched so they needed to use He-man's name to prop up Teela. Just... think about that.

To me the sad thing is it's one thing to do something wrong and do it genuinely wrong, it's another for a studio to claim they're going to be culturally appropriate or claim to be better than the rest and then when they're wrong they yell at us the consumer saying we either aren't woke enough or find some other excuse when the problematic factor is that the Asianism in the film is actually highlighted even more by companies claiming that this is "Cultural appropriation and if you don't watch it you're against progress" (I've seen 3 articles that more or less say that trying to defend this movie)
It reminds me of when Sia made a movie about Autism but was surprised when she got called out because she and her crew fired the autistic actress they were working with because they couldn't compensate for her needs or accomodate her in any way. This was talked about for maybe 2 weeks and then forgotten about but, then when the film came out and people asked why I didn't like it they told me I wasn't woke enough to appreciate it even though I being an autistic person did not at all feel represented by the film.

i think it's more of show don't tell, whereas this movie was clearly a case of espousing the word to make it seem like it's embodying it, but not really showing it.
Even in the Japanese media that espouse the word, it's in the context of showing why something is honorable or dishonorable
You know a good example of a Western show that did the whole Japanese honor concept better than this, aside from Avatar: The Last Airbender?
      BEAST WARS
FUCKING TRANSFORMERS, GI Joe's more successful little brother.
Namely, with the character of Dinobot. He's spoused the word several times to being the plot point, but at least it's a case of showing along with telling. His final episode is full of the concept of honor, namely that he's dishonored himself to the point of pretty much almost committing seppuku.
ON A KID'S SHOW. THAT TREATED IT SERIOUSLY BUT WELL
I mean, it's not clearly stated to be suicide, let alone seppuku, but how else can you interpret how he's kneeling and holding his sword toward himself?

Disagree on he-man but I agree with you on Snake eyes. In the old sires Snake eyes was a Vietnam vet who went to study after he fell in love with japanes culture. They wanted to make Snake eyes something he wasn't and wanted to make him vary japanes with this version despite the river ninja hated Snake eyes because he was a outsider who got accepted and over shadowed him.

17:20 In one of the other two Joe movies, Storm Shadow is able to tell an Arashikage-made sword as a fake by breaking it with his bare hands because, in his words, "[real] Arashikage steel does not break."

To be fair, I myself live in Minnesota and for plenty of my childhood many of my fellow citizens wouldn't be able to find Mexico on a map by themselves and I'm only 20 years old. So I can't really say I'm surprised that they got so much of Japan wrong. Besides America isn't really known to be one the most culturally aware countries in the modern world. As sad as it is we still have a long way to catch to other nations with our educational systems. I my self just find it incredibly stupid that so many Americans refuse to allow non whites into our communities and our nation was built in immigration, and not peaceful immigration by any means. I went in with little to no expectations, since I only saw a little of the original show growing up, and I really enjoyed it *because* of the different direction the story took.

My writing philosophy is "be interesting, be humorous, be respectful" I am researching the origin of the classic Green Ranger Dragon Shield, as I want to make a tribute to Jason David Frank you know Tommy Oliver. But I can't find much information on the origin and I know it is Asian inspired because Azula has the same style armour in Avatar the last air bender.
Honor is not being used by any characters in my work, unless it means Honor as in did the right thing at the right time, or keeping your word.Ohana is a concept I wish to incorporate too, not Disney Ohana the Polynesian true meaning. Honor is not something that has lost meaning, it needs to be fixed.

    • @Plokman040
      @Plokman040 ปีที่แล้ว

Found the information, the Dragon Shield is known as a Mantel Armor, a mix of a set of Pauldrons and a Georget chest piece. Seen in so much Asian media and Asian inspired (Azula is a great example) media and now I can indeed properly tell my friend who I commission for design concepts (I am a sprite and Pixel art guy I need a reference to refine my designs) the reference.
Also Honor in my creations will reference Chivalry style Honor, like a certain knight in a certain FPS.

I actually like it for Zuko because it was a non-word. It was a fabrication word that to him meant acceptance, but to Iroh, Ang and others, they knew what Zuko's "honor" really meant. A goal forced on him. Honor to Zuko changed from what his father wanted to what HE wanted.

Though I have been watching shows like Adam Ruins Everything, where he debunks common misconceptions and gives people a hard time about it. One example he reveled is that many "health" foods has the opposite effect. Like diet food has replaced fat (good and bad) with sugar which actually makes you fat.

I hate to defend the movie, because I also didn't care much for it. But the whole mention of "I saw honor in your eyes," that Snake Eyes said to Tomi was something that the Yakuza Kenji wanted Snake to say to his cousin because he knew he'd fall for that stereotype. That's why Tomi responded in kind and that's why everything about Tomi's character fit the stereotypical Asianism. So while I appreciated the film's attempt to make Storm Shadow a more interesting and nuanced villain, the use of "honor" really only came up because of him and the Arashikage.

C'mon hollywood, you have the internet, look up stuff and be factual, go to a museum, cross reference, something o-o i know G.I Joe is from the 80's, but we are not and are not closed off in knowledge as we were. Even from just the trailer when it was gang stuff happening i was thinking "why all the swords i thought yakuza used whatever they could like brass knuckles or knives?".
