It has been growing away from the mosspole but the stem is so thick and willfull there is no pushing it back, its a beautiful plant but honestly it belongs in a botanical gardens not my bedroom!

    Listening to the first minute of the video I would say you the plant you received was a cutting from a large/mature plant perhaps from “the wild” 🤔 it might explain the timing if it had been cut and repotted it needed time to grow more roots as you say.

    Hi, you might not see this comment as this video is some months old. But first thank you for making so much good, fun and educational content! Love your videos 🙂
    Living in Norway it is certainly exotic to watch!
    I have a rather big monstera with big leaves with secondary fenestrations in the top but the bottom of the plant is very thin. However there are som aerial roots already going down into the pot. Do you think it would be OK to cut below these since they already probably has good roots in the pot?
    I would love to have a more compact plant but keep the big beautiful leaves.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you can. It will slow down the growth of then plant. Is it climbing up a wall or pole?
      Do consider upsizing the if its root bound. And perhaps you can also propagate to keep the top cutting down to the bottom of the pot. Let it start over but starting with big leaves. Usually large leaves grow new ones every 4-6 months.

    • @gurif71
      @gurif71 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@onlyplants Thank you very much. Yes it is growing up a pole. I will check the status of the aerial roots going into te pot/soil and hopefully I can cut the top and get a plant starting with the large beautiful leaves 🙂

    Great video, I just bought a monstera yesterday, hopefully mine will look as good as yours. I have a monstera adasonii that has really taken off so keeping my fingers crossed. I noticed your shingle vine, it is amazing!!! I bought one over a year ago, at the time it was about 12" tall. The tag said they only get about 4'-5' tall. Hmm, I've already had to put a taller board 3 different times. Last one was in October and I have about 12" left on that board. I'm 5'2" and it's taller than I am. You definately have the perfect growing conditions.

    This is a very good tip! I've been into monsteras for a while now and recently managed to get my hands on a Thai Constellation, it has developed an air root so I was thinking of this video but replacing the pot of soil with sphagnum D; wish me luck!

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thai constellations are a little bit harder than this, as they take longer to root and push out new shoots. Be extra careful not to overwater them when propagating 😀

    I have a big monstera in a pot at my front door. I bought 3 tiny plants in a sale bin at the department store for $2.50 each, and potted them together. They were about 6 inches tall. It’s now growing really well in filtered morning light. Have repotted it once in the 3 or 4 years I’ve had it. I think I might try your propagation method. But like you I have no idea where I will put it!

    I love these updates so much. You don’t leave us without updates like many other channels!!
    Just one quick question, is this a Monstera deliciosa? Mine doesn’t have the holes in the centre, but only the splits, if you know what I mean. I don’t know if it’s because of the variety or my conditions. Could you please have some tips about the fenestrations? Thanks!

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine is the deliciosa. You can tell its a deliciosa when it has frills on the back of the leaves right at the top of the petiole, but only on more mature leaves. For younger leaves its hard to tell. Do dM me with pics if you are confused.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fenestrations come when the plant is mature and when it feels that its successfully climbed onto something, they need to root into a wall (or in our case a moss pole)

    • @proletariatsgarden
      @proletariatsgarden 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@onlyplants OH thanks for the reply! Mine is about one year old, the oldest leaves don't have splits at all, only the newer ones have splits, but not holes. So after your explanation, I think mine is still too young, the cane/stem doesn't have the aged stump look yet. I staked it on a moss pole though, so what I will do is just wait.... First of all,...LOOOVEEE ALL YOUR VIDEOS! Secondly, could you PLEASE answer this question for me. I have a very tall but leggy monstera that I would like to just chop and start over with. I have good fenestrations but only one leaf that exhibits the holes as shown in your video. My dream is to get mine to have such large and holy leaves like this! BUT, I am scared to death that if I cut it, it will push out all small and immature leaves again. Will this plant continue as normal or will it force the plant back to the small leaves it had when it was young? Also, should I also air layer the roots? I have seen folks doing this but was unsure if it promotes more leaves or more stalks?? HELP

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  ปีที่แล้ว

      The key is - the top most cutting of that plants. When you propagate, you can take 3-5 leaves at the top as 1 cutting. With more leaves and more aerial roots, the plant will produce large new leaves rather than shrunken leaves.
      The mid and lower sections of your cuttings will produce small leaves. Good for backup plants or to give neighbours/friends 😀

    I have this idea of having a huge, sprawling Monstera in the corner of my room, and I'm considering getting 3 of the Monsteras from the store, and then maybe using a 35 gallon hexagon aquarium with drainage holes drilled in the bottom and putting all three in there. I can't find videos of people consolidating Monsteras, but if the pot was big enough, is there any reason it's inherently inadvisable to put them all together?
    If it is possible, I'm also considering buying a cutting from a giant Monstera online and maybe putting it in the middle, so once it finally grows it'll start shooting off some giant leaves as well, would this step _also_ be possible?
    I know this is a really specific, speculative question but you seem like about as much of an expert on Monsteras as there is so I figured I'd try to get your opinion if I could.
    Thank you so much!

      Hello, theres actually 2 monsteras. (1) deliciosa (2) borsigiana. Make sure you got the right one. In your case I am assuming you are taking on the deliciosa?
      You can combine 3 in one pot… although I would have selected 1 monstera only and then “landscape” the pot a bit with other plants.

      And yes it helps to buy a mature enough monstera to start so you dont have to wait years
