Been watching Bob since I was a kid in the 80's. Couldn't believe when I found his videos a couple years ago on youtube. People mention watching him because of he's calm and helps them sleep. I enjoy watching him with the memory of my brother and me watching him as kids. My brother has been passed away 15 years now but this warms my heart watching this with my memories

Not only was Bob a tremendous artist, but he was also an excellent communicator, a storyteller who brought imagery to life, a lover of nature, and a wonderful guy who had the most soothing voice I've ever heard.

You can! Everyone I know that says that, I stick some supplies in front of them. Even acrylics can be adapted, which is what I usually use and can do all the same things. Heavy or medium body, and some craft paint for the fluid stuff like branches and when he thins the paint, plus some retarder that slows the dry time, and most modifications can be made. A spray mister bottle dampens the canvas to do wet-on wet; or even spray the back as well to help it slow the dry time a little more. And everyone finds out that they actually can paint! They are just afraid to muss up the canvas, so that’s the first thing I have them do, just mark it up. Make an easy sky, make some water ahead like Bob shows, and then add what isn’t sky or water, just like Bob. Make a crooked line that is wider at the bottom, maybe even a crooked root or two along the ground that comes up out of the ground in spots, and add crooked lines for branches. Make varied shades of wiggly lines on the trunk and branches, lighter in one side for highlights, and you have nice bark, maybe do 3/4 of a circle or oval in a different shade of brown here and there, maybe where it bumps out a bit, for a knot on the trunk. Dab a few shades of a similar color for leaves. Now it’s a tree. Add some shrubbery at the base. Some color here and there in clumps for flowers. Everyone surprised themselves and is happy to find they can paint after all. If I were a billionaire, among other things, I’d be hooking everyone up with some supplies and some encouragement. With Jerrysartarama online (it’s the best source I’ve found so far, no affiliation myself with them), it’s affordable to get a box of 20 canvases of whatever size, I get them in various sizes, and then for about $1-3 per canvas, plus the sample deals they often have for various brushes and paints and such, we can all go nuts and paint to our heart’s content. When I tell people it isn’t a $20 canvas, they are less fearful of making a boo-boo. It costs less than going to the movies or anything else, and is far more fun. And they learn that it really is just paint. And paint can be painted over, just like Bob says:) You can also practice brush strokes for trees, grass, or whatever on regular or watercolor paper before you try something new on your painting, especial when it is going well and you like it. If it’s acrylic, I sometimes let it dry for a few hours or day to be well-set up and then go back to add something I haven’t yet tried if I am not sure I want in the painting. If I don’t like it, I can wipe it off before it dries (acrylic dries fast) with a wet cloth and the rest stays put. That helps build confidence, too:) I hope you try it and find out how great you really are at painting! This site has tons of free lessons. There’s a nice guy, forgot his name, but he does 10 minute ones to show how to quickly do one you will like. He modified for acrylic. I think search 10 minute painting and you’ll find him. He’s in his 20’s, brunette with brown eyes, polite and clear speaking. StayCreativePainting. That’s his channel now. He used to show himself, looks like he doesn’t anymore. He does littler ones now to just show how quickly one can be done, maybe 4c6 or 5x7’s. For me, it’s actually easier to paint at least a 12x16 up to one that’s 3’x5’ or so than to do a little tiny one, less delicate lines to do, but that just me. Bob’s usual size of 18x24 is pretty good, there’s room to move your arm in larger movements, use bigger brushes. It flows off the brush more easily for me. But some people like to try their hand on something small. Anyway, I hope by now you’ve decided to try it out. Just remember, as Bob says, the thin paint sticks to the thicker paint. So if you use acrylics and use craft paint, let it dry before the next layer, which won’t take long, or use it over the tubes of thicker paint like Liquitex, Artist’s Loft, Soho, or Thornton, the latter two are surprisingly smoother and they go on nicely, especially for their price. White, Black, a primary Red, Cad Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Phthalo Blue, Sap Green, Van Dyke Brown or something close, and maybe an Orange, and almost anything Bob does can be made with them. Talens Amsterdam brand has the very best Van Dyke Brown and Sap Green for some reason (there’s a big difference in some brands), Jerry’s Artarama has that brand. White goes the fastest, I get bigger tubes of that and for me, the blue, green and brown get used the most. Others are fine with smaller tubes or even inexpensive craft paint for a beginner, since they are for details. Another acrylic tip is to only put out a little on your palette at a time, just what you will use in 5 or 10 minutes at a time, and you won’t waste as much, because they dry so fast. Also, if I do have blobs and want to take a break, misting the paints on the palette with water or dripping some on them, adding a wet sponge or wet blob of paper towel (I use a paper plate for a palette, then to save the paints I get the paints a liytle wet and add the wet bit of sponge, and cover it all with an upside-down paper plate to not squish the paints, and tape it enough to keep it from falling off, then cover with plastic and/or even put in a small plastic airtight bin, and that has made most of it last even overnight, but I’m learning to just not put so much out to begin with). One more tip is if you mix a color you hate, add dark colors like Bob does, and use it for black or brown, for trees, riverbanks, mountains and cabins. There will be highlights over them anyway. Less waste.

Although i already practice much of you mention, i did pick up a few new pointers. Mist of my art life (off n on) i dabbled with pencil, ink, charcoal and dry pastels. It was only 6 months ago that i started with acrylics. I would love to begin using oils but because of the modifications you mentioned with using acrylics, i’m able to hold off. Any way thank you for sharing ur valuable experience and advice.

I'm an artist (I'm more into pencil and charcoal rather than painting myself) and a couple of months ago I lost my "passion" and motivation let's say and watching Bob painting and how much joy he gets makes me miss art and motivates me to start again, he's such an inspiration.

This painting surely is a beast of a painting. Te enormous glacier is something completely different from the norm and provides us with a great perspective on how mountainous figures like this are made. You can see so much angle and size to this compared to the smaller trees. It might not have as much depth but it has clarity and color and boldness to it. This would be a perfect painting for a log cabin in my opinion. I hope you enjoyed my *_Happy Little Review~_*

It's really sad that Bob had to go out like that. He was a real hero, but instead of rescuing people from danger, he spread positive thoughts and support through his words and paintings I recently began rewatching his videos and his support has been helping so much with my self esteem, normally I wouldn't think very high of myself and I beat myself up (mentally) very easily. But his words have been working so well to bring me back up from the hole I dug for myself. I really do appreciate it, and I hope that whoever reads this agrees with me on how Bob Ross, is a true hero.

I think this is one of my favorites! He's never done such a huge mountain/glacier again, so it's quite unique.

Watching his videos and reading the comments are the most relaxing thing in your day
This painting surely is a beast of a painting. Te enormous glacier is something completely different from the norm and provides us with a great perspective on how mountainous figures like this are made. You can see so much angle and size to this compared to the smaller trees. It might not have as much depth but it has clarity and color and boldness to it. This would be a perfect painting for a log cabin in my opinion.

It's really sad that Bob had to go out like that.
He was a real hero, but instead of rescuing people from danger, he spread positive thoughts and support through his words and paintings
I recently began rewatching his videos and his support has been helping so much with my self esteem, normally I wouldn't think very high of myself and I beat myself up (mentally) very easily. But his words have been working so well to bring me back up from the hole I dug for myself. I really do appreciate it, and I hope that whoever reads this agrees with me on how Bob Ross, is a true hero.
