  • At night, these parasites crawl onto your bed, bite you and suck your blood. Then they find a nearby hideout where they leave disgusting telltale signs. But these pests have an Achilles’ heel that stops them cold.

DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
Adult bed bugs are about the size and color of an apple seed. After biting, they hide in a nearby cranny, like the seam of the mattress.
At the University of California, Irvine, biologist and engineer Catherine Loudon is working to create synthetic surfaces that could trap bed bugs. She was inspired by the tiny hooked hairs that grow from the leaves of some varieties of beans, such as kidney and green beans. In nature, these hairs, called trichomes, pierce through the feet of the aphids and leafhoppers that like to feed on the plants.
Researchers have found that these pointy hairs are just as effective against bed bugs, even though the bloodsucking parasites don’t feed on leaves. Loudon’s goal is to mimic a bean leaf’s mechanism to create an inexpensive, portable bed bug trap.
“You could imagine a strip that would act as a barrier that could be placed virtually anywhere: across the portal to a room, behind the headboard, on subway seats, an airplane,” Loudon said. “They have six legs, so that’s six opportunities to get trapped.”
--- Where do bed bugs come from?
Bed bugs don’t fly or jump or come in from the garden. They crawl very quickly and hide in travelers’ luggage. They also move around on secondhand furniture, or from apartment to apartment.
--- How can I avoid bringing bed bugs home?
“It would probably be a prudent thing to do a quick bed check if you’re sleeping in a strange bed,” said Potter. His recommendation goes for hotel rooms, as well as dorms and summer camp bunk beds. He suggests pulling back the sheet at the head of the bed and checking the seams on the top and bottom of the mattress and the box spring.

I'll be 70 soon. I grew up with these. She say's you won't even feel them. Once the infestation reaches a certain level there's just too many of them and it will wake you. Imagine being a kid and waking up to the bites and the itch. Imagine seeing them on you and the mattress. It really freaks you out and exhausts you trying not to sleep for fear of them. It effects your whole life. You're so tired you can't think straight, your school work suffers, you get depressed. It's like being in a horror movie.

My cleaning lady brought bedbugs into my house because she insisted on using her own vacuum when she cleaned. It was actually pretty easy to get rid of them but it takes time and diligence. You need to encapsulate your mattress and boxspring in sealed covers. At the same time spray down the entire bed frame with insecticide and coat the legs with petroleum jelly. Then wash and dry your bedding before putting it back on your bed. Make sure your bedding does not hang down and touch the floor. Also make sure you take off all your clothes and wipe off your feet anytime you get into bed. You need to cut off their food supply (you) and they will all die in about 6 months. It is extremely important that you do not reintroduce the bedbugs back into the bed so make certain they are not on you when you get into your bed. Their eggs can last up to two years so I would keep the covers on the mattress and box spring for two years. If you have no bites during that two year period you won the battle. Reward yourself with a new mattress and box spring.

They didn't become resistent to DTT. It was found out how bad DTT was for the environment and they stopped. It killed them very well. Since then there is nothing as strong as that now they have become a problem. There are still ways to get rid of them though but it takes longer.

Sprinkle lavender flowers all over the place. They make a concentrated distilled version of it you can spray on your sheets and blankets. Bed bugs DO NOT like the scent. It won’t get rid of them 100% but it will drastically reduce their numbers. About the only way to extinguish them 100% is by heat. Heat a room to 140° for 8 hours. It’ll kill all adults, pupae and larvae. Stick with the lavender to keep them from getting out of hand again though.

Twice I have lived in buildings with bed bugs, and while so many others were continuing to be infested, I was able to rid my living space of the critters all together. I used three tactics that have worked every time. 1. Wrapping mattress and boxspring in the thick Moving Plastic that comes on on brand new mattresses and taping up any breathing holes in the plastic with duct tape. The Bug resistant pillow covers work well, but the ones they make for mattresses have too much stitching and folds that bedbugs still can nest in. So just straight plastic. 2. Using a microfiber blanket with no seams or stitched ribbing. 3. Spray everything down with straight rubbing alcohol until damp. It not only will dissolve the critters and their eggs, but it also drys them out internally. If the alcohol doesn't work immediately spray a little more. 1-2 saturating sprays will kill them dead. NOTE: a fourth trick that can be used is to fill four tuna cans just little bit with rubbing alcohol and place those under your bed post leg. This prevents the bugs from even being able to get to your bed. But do this along with the plastic, microfiber blanket. There are sites and articles that claim that the alcohol doesn't work, But I'm telling you, it does, and you'll always notice that those sites are trying to sell you some other product or service.

I also took duct tape and taped the bed frame (wooden) where they could hide, and wrapped tape with the sticky side out all around. And I HOSED the room down with 90% alcohol, and got heaters and heated up the room to over 100 degrees. They can’t take heat.

@@tartarlinks3162 We tied most of the content of the room in black plastic bags and left them on the balcony for a few months.
Inside the room, we called people to do the steam treatment, followed by application of a powder to the baseboard and between furniture pieces. The powder sticks to the bug and dehydrates them, as I understand.
We also got a smaller, cheaper steam-cleaner (it's like a small vacuum) to do our own periodical sweeps of the bed and its surroundings, and so far it's worked: the treatment was in September 2020, and I haven't seen a live bed bug since, only a few carcasses at most.

All my life I thought bed bugs were imaginary monsters, until this year. Now I personally know they exist. What REALLY pisses me off? I JUST bought a new bedding set when I discovered these little “suckers” and I don’t DARE tell the landlord because the last person who told her they got these monsters she evicted them. So now I am trying to treat these things by myself, unsuccessfully at that. Low income housing is always so much fun

Try taking a bowl and pouring in a large bottle of medicinal grade alcohol. Add about 3/4 cup of oregano and a handful of rosemary if you have it. Cover and let sit for 24 hours or more. Stir once in a while. Strain resulting tincture into a spray bottle and thoroughly spray your mattress, bedding, clothing. Do not spray finished wood. When you remake your bed, sprinkle oregano in it and in your pillow slips. Cover wooden furniture legs with double sided tape or cut in strips and use rodent glue traps glue side out and completely encircling legs from floor to frame. If furniture legs are not wood, you can fill large tin cans with with water and set your furniture legs in those. Apparently the little suckers cant swim. Be sure to leave the room after you spray and air it out before you go back in.

One time my aunt was staying over at my house and brought her boyfriend to us & he brought bed bugs over to our house. The feeling of knowing you’re going to wake up the next morning covered in red bumps will make you not want to sleep at all. It was so hard to get rid of them even when we fumigated it, what worked for me is I bought a cover over my mattress so nothing can stick onto it and they went away

I lived in a place that got bed bugs. I was the first to notice and told my house mates of them. They told me "No, those are just beetles" so I showed them pictures and videos of bedbugs along with a captured bug from off my pillow. They had to call in a second opinion because the only female in the house could not be right. By the time they admitted it was bed bugs, it was too late to stop the infestation. By the way, they also took credit for realizing it was bedbugs. Glad I left, the parasites were making me lose blood and brain cells there...

Try waking up with your head on the pillow looking across your pillow and seeing 5 of them crawling towards you. I tried to completely clean every item in my bedroom but the only thing that will kill them is having extreme heat applied to them for hours-you have to remove all glass, ammo, anything delicate in your room, take out the electrical outlet ports, remove everything 1-2 feet from the walls, and calling up a bug company and have them use a special chemical for several hs with heat 117-135 degrees that will kill them.

This is why biodiversity is so important. There are things that nature has done that we could never understands. So packing in as many different varieties of plants into an areas really does encourages vitality and protections of each other. This is called a Cover Crop usually needing 15 to 30 different species.
