  • Until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended legal segregation, the South Carolina Colored State Fair (also referred to as the Negro State Fair or State Colored Fair) was the segregated fair for Black residents that ran in the week following the South Carolina State Fair. Though the State Fair was technically desegregated in 1965, the Colored State Fair continued on as the Palmetto State Fair for several more years, until its last run in 1969. Dr. A. J. Collins ran the fair for decades as president of the Palmetto State Fair Association. He retired in 1971, and the organization was dissolved.
