This is my favorite channel/show, I live in a very tumultuous marriage, this show makes my life better and gives me the escape I desperately seek...thank you so much for everything Tony❤
Also, you skipped the part where the children get freed. That shot of Indy standing there waiting for the Thugee as the light from the mine cart shines on him….incredible image. And then the sound of Indy beating the shit out of the guy and the kid looking up and smiling….awesome bit! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
The most badass moment of the Indiana Jones franchise is when the slave children were pushing a mine car towards Indy and the light from it slowly reveals his determined face as John Williams' score heroically blasts in the background (the scene after the line "Right, all of us"). Then we hear punches off-screen and see a knocked out Thugee guard landing & sliding on the floor.
My dad took my sister and I to see Raiders at the theater. But, this one is the one I remembered liking the most as a kid because the arcade game was at the mall I went to, and I was a little older when I saw it at the movies. Also, it was the first one on VHS we had between the two movies at the time. So, I saw it more often. I l love the premise. I love the setting. I love the beginning. And I love the fact that it's a "darker" film thematically. The part with the heart being taken out was ALWAYS awesome! The monkey brains was awesome! I DO remember reading stories about people protesting the movie because of it depicting certain people as monkey brain eating, snake handling, violent folks in India. Of course, I never knew anyone who actually believed there were real life people that did these things in civilized parts of the world, but the country of India prevented the movie from being shot there because of said protests. Nonetheless, Temple of Doom was such a fun, fantastical movie that allowed us to take a break from the Nazis and gave it a more fantasy like flair. And of course, who can forget "Short Round!"
I remember the Read-a-long Book Record of this and Return of the Jedi. The bug scene, the cart sequence, and the crocodile scene were great. Shorty was my favorite.
The best i concede to raiders, but temple of doom is still my personal favorite. Something about all the crazy action and unsettling scenes, a great villain, etc. Feels like the crazy side mission of the franchise Indy just gets dropped into. Certainly never boring
"🥺I was happy in Shanghai! I had a little house and a garden! My friends were rich; we went to parties all the time in limosines! 😭😫I HATE BEING OUTSIDE!!" 🤦♂️😤SHHHHAAAAADUUUUPPP!!
Since I was a kid, and even till now, I've found this to be the most interesting Indiana Jones film, it always felt like a cool chapter out of his life of adventuring. I also never found Willie to be annoying, she made all of her lines pretty damned funny, it wasn't till many MANY years later I kept hearing about her screaming being such a huge problem, I don't get it. Not to mention all the soft weirdos this movie "offends" with it's fake satanic cult (worshiping an albeit real Hindu Goddess), or Short Round using his very REAL accent. If people don't like it then whatever, but I can't stand when someone is offended on another person's behalf.
Such a fun movie. As a prequel it continues with some religious imagery and plot lines. It's the most horror-themed Indiana Jones film, too, and I love it for that. Kali-ma! ❤️🔥 The mine cart scene is my favorite. Temple of Doom and Gremlins led to the creation of the PG-13 rating.
I owned the VHS as a kid, so it was Indiana Jones movie. I watched the most so I have the most nostalgia and found memories of it. It’s definitely an underrated and fun movie.
I’ve watched Raiders of the Lost Ark several times, and I’ve watched The Last Crusade many, many times. I love Indiana Jones! But Temple of Doom? Not so much, there’s just something too off about it to win my heart. All in all, though, I think the Indy trilogy…yah, im disregarding everything after 1989, I believe the Indy trilogy to be a great film adventure.
Willy Scott is the exception to the "annoying, screaming, useless female tagalong" trope, because she's obviously been thrust into an awful position: She's a gangster's concubine who gets dumped/sacrificed callously (to her face!) after giving this huge performance that was likely the entirety of her narrow focus. She gets shot at, thrown from a window, car-chased with a child driver by her ex and his armed minions, forced aboard an airplane she's later ejected from, dropped into India, and recruited against her will into a magic fetch-quest...and that's all before we even see the Macguffin... ...and then she rises to the occasion by getting tough, keeps up with the group, endures the bug room, AND starts killing dudes for the team by the time they reach the bridge. She has an arc and it's as natural as an Indy movie will allow. Plus, Capshaw's a dime.
Agree 100% that this is the best Indiana Jones film. I’ve always loved it! In fact, it may be the first one I saw when it premiered on HBO or Cinemax. As a kid, every time I’d see a suspension bridge, I’d wanna play Indiana Jones. 😅. Anyway, this movie is the perfect example of a spookhouse/funhouse/roller coast ride. Also, I want the Temple of Doom (with the giant Kali statue and its grass skirt of severed human arms) to be my living room.
My theory about why Mola Ram doesn't take Willy's heart: The first guy they sacrificed was a devout Hindu with a "pure" heart that had to be removed for the sacrifice to work, Willy is the ex girlfriend of a crime lord who's probably been complicit in some bad stuff. That's why Mola Ram gives her a "oh you bad girl" smirk when he looks her over, like he can sense that she's done some bad shit.
"When you clicked on the Temple of Doom review did you think we would be talking about riding the Red Sea?" Well...no...but I honestly wasn't surprised by it.
The idea of the Palace people eating meat meaning they're not on the level was actually spoken as dialog by Indy in a scene from the script that was cut. So it was intentional, and the movie would have told us that.
It’s hands down my favorite. I’ve always been baffled by the criticism. It’s the closest to the pulp serials that influenced it, but also much darker. Spielberg and Lucas were going through relationship troubles and that frustration naturally comes through in the film in a positive way. It’s mean and dirty, but also colorful and fun. The people calling it racist are totally off base. It’s an exaggerated alien perspective through the eyes of outsiders. It being a prequel is actually relevant as Indy learns to respect other cultures by the end and by Raiders he has a different outlook on how to approach his profession.
Couldn't agree more, this one is the best Indy movie ever made. Every time I watch it, I can't stop and it's like reading a good book, you just can't put it down. Love it!
Didn't like it when i was younger. It has grown on me. Would've wanted more Shanghai stuff that was a awesome opening action scene. But I love all of them (including 4). lol kinda excited and not for the new one we will see, hopefully it doesn't suck. hahaha
I don't have a favorite at all. Both Raiders and Doom were tied in my book because both genuinely struck fear in me at the age I was. Crusade, however, was PURE adventure when it came out after I grew up more. The first two had more of an impact because I was young and the fear I felt was genuine. Crusade didn't scare me like the first two did, but it enthralled me on a different level that fed what I was at that time. But correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't Doom's timeline BEFORE Indy's Raiders adventure chronologically???
Honestly, my biggest complaint about this movie is that the title card saying “Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom” is behind Willie for some reason.. You can’t even see the word “of” because it’s behind her on screen 🙄
I think crusades and raiders are the best indy movies. Change my mind. Temple of doom is pretty good though. Cautiously optimistic about Indy 5 cause I love James Mangold.
While Raiders is my favorite overall, Temple of Doom is a very close second place. We had this on the same tape as the Wizard of Oz, so this was the only Indy film I saw as a kid. I think my main issue with the movie is that it's a prequel to Raiders, which doesn't make sense as Indy was a skeptic in that film. Temple of Doom is a haunted house roller coaster; what's not to love?
I think it’s maybe because people seen this movie more I definitely think the Temple of doom is my favorite but I’ve watched it so many times compared to the others again because it was readily available on TV and any kin anyone can watch it
I worship Spielberg. But one of things I knock him for is his backtracking from Temple and making Crusade a bit too safe and sanitized. Crusade may even eclipse Raiders as the overall fan favorite, but to me it's always felt too tame and samey. I think Spielberg took the criticism of Temple to heart and let it get to his ego so he made Crusade to appease people. Now, I really like Crusade, but the first 40mins dip into feeling a little tired and been there done that. Once Connery enters the picture it picks up magnificently.
30 years ago I thought the "lava/magma" isn't that, but it's more like Kali in protoplasmatic form, slowly taking physical form, needing lots of sacrifices for that!? Though that's just me rationalising a volcano or something under a temple in India where people use Voodoo... 😬
What always bothered me... how did Mola Ram get to the other side of the bridge? Indy and the gang are in a high speed mine cart chase, while he breaks the dam. Yet somehow he manages to get to the other side of the ravine before they do.
I've always liked Last Crusade the best out of the Indy series but I think of Temple of Doom as the most "iconic" of the series. If I think of Indy, my mind first goes to bits from this movie like the encounter with Lao Che, the minecarts, Mola Ram, the spiked room, the bridge. Not my favorite of the series but dammit Tony, your infectious enthusiasm has made me feel like watching this movie again!
It's weird that certain movies are enjoying a 2nd life. I have absolutely always loved Temple of Doom and its darker themes. ToD was the 1st Indy movie I saw in the theater, and one of the earliest movies I remember seeing in the theater. And yes, growing up it got way more play time than the other 2 movies. When Crystal Skull released basically everyone with an online presence said it wasn't great, but it's the 3rd best Indy movie ahead of ToD. I actually don't dislike Crystal Skull, but it ain't no ToD.
Fun film; was my favorite as a kid without a doubt! (it’s not anymore but it is great) and it’s fun to think of this film as the “first/prequel” of the trilogy even though that theory doesn’t really hold up.
The only reason I had any dislike of Shortround is just how loud he was half the time. I'm more a fan of his actor as Data in The Goonies, I always wanted the spring loaded wind up teeth he had.
The shortround series should be him spending a life helping heroes. Indiana jones, rambo, james bond, chuck norris, a dozen schwarzenegger characters. Every week a new adventure he sidekicks but isnt directly involved, he can be a cause of all the random conveniences in action movies,. Always working in the background.
Had no idea this wasn't looked at fondly until the internet. It's is clearly the best one. Raiders is a better motion picture, this is just a badass movie. Exotic locales, hidden passageways, spike walls, plucky sidekicks, secret death cults, voodoo dolls in India somehow, rope bridges, magic rocks! It's all the best grimy adventure stuff.
Yeah, Bull fighting is Latin culture based blood sport. With Spain being the prime example with a fighting bull breed. Bull fighting is practiced to some extent in Mexico, central and South America. Ideally, the matador kills the bull, which is butchered, barbecued followed by fiesta.
Bull fighting’s earliest record is in the court of Gilgamesh historically and in mythology. Bull leaping as opposed to blood sport is most notable in Crete but also across Ancient Greece. Like, I’m familiar with javelin spears used in bull fighting, barbecued beef and baked corn. Killing wild domestic animals too unruly is a theme on the western hemisphere.
In Shanghai they speak Shanghainese or Mandarin. In the 30s, most would speak the language spoken in their local province but the more educated people, the business owners and any soldiers or politicians would've also spoken Mandarin. During the cultural revolution Mao declared that everyone should learn Mandarin so all the people of China could communicate. Keep your local dialect but learn Mandarin. The other major dialect you're thinking of is Cantonese.
I’m glad you said temple of doom was the best, gonna sub just because of that lol. I hate all the boring reviewer snobs on TH-cam that try and call it the worst one. Temple was the most fun, and the most like the adventure serials the series was inspired by.
So many diamonds in my teef, YOU CAN'T SEE NO GOLD! TonyTrilla.. REMAIN ON YO' GRIND and keep your pimp-hand STRONG.. Keep chopping on BUSTAS and don't forget to review 'Under Wraps' for all the homies serving time in the clink due to your hijinks.. BANG 'DEM BARS BRUDDA!! Praise to King Selassie and and the almighty messiah Greg Beeman - Bring us back to Zion, Piluso!!
Riders of the Lost ark was the best, than The Last crusade. Nobody never talks about the Crystal skull was... what happened to Indiana Jones he was...😢
Dial of Destiny feels like it's gonna be another Rise of Skywalker, with the new character stealing the title of Dr. Jones like Rey with the Skywalker name. I'm sorry, no offense to Daisy Ridley, but Rey did not earn that!
Haven't watched the video yet, curious to see your points, but I do want to say that Temple of Doom IS my favorite Indiana Jones movie, has been since the first time I've watched it
Ah, don't worry, Tony, about people hearing you call them stupid for not liking Temple of Doom. It's like me worrying about people hearing me call them stupid for liking Dial of Density- I mean, Destiny.
Intelligent people don't actually care what others think of things they either like or dislike....Luckily everyone is entitled to their own opinions. It would be a sad existence if I ever actually worried what people think about what I like or don't like.
I was able to catch Raiders in the theater in summer 2019, the Goonies also. Was the best. Lot of dudes who looked like Tony, wearing Members Only jackets, by themselves there lol.
As a member of the PBS (Pee in the Bathtub Squad) this is my second favorite indie film, still last crusade i think is better. But mine cart n bridge scene are the best action scenes on any indie film hands down, especially mine cart scene (miniature) looks incredible in 4k still.
Not only are Vampire Bats tiny, they don't even live in India. They're from Central and South America. Not that the Indiana Jones series keeps their animals geographical origins correct. The tarantulas in Raiders that are crawling on Indy and Alfred Molina in South America are a Mexican species.
I honestly think temple is my favorite, just got all the campy fun I love and I just dig the over the top setting of crazy mines and jungles amd lava pits
I'm surprised you didn't talk about how during mine car chase there are several shots where you can clearly see they're using puppets in the mine carts, lol
Not better than Raiders of lost Ark but still a good movie. I dont get the hate this movie gets. I have the same issues with it other people do but I don't think it's a bad movie.
Before I watch the video, I just wanna say. Tony is such a nice guy, he's generous, and respectful. I don't think he'd be mean for even a second.
Whata guy!
Tony danza?
he did rip jessica's heart out, only because he was possessed!
To me Temple of Doom really captures that pulp adventure feeling more than any of the others.
Oh dude, that scene still chokes me up to this day and I’m 42 lol
Yeah, this scene alone is what makes Indy an actual super hero! Agreed!!!
The most badass moment of the Indiana Jones franchise is when the slave children were pushing a mine car towards Indy and the light from it slowly reveals his determined face as John Williams' score heroically blasts in the background (the scene after the line "Right, all of us"). I'm Indian and I find it crazy that people don't realize the villains are meant to be a cult.
Especially when they're specifically discussed during the dinner scene 🙂
The best i concede to raiders, but temple of doom is still my personal favorite. Something about all the crazy action and unsettling scenes, a great villain, etc. Feels like the crazy side mission of the franchise Indy just gets dropped into. Certainly never boring
Yes, it is, I agree. Love everything about this one. Yes, even Willie. She is fun.
Willie is so annoying though, short round isn't bad though, I just don't like how he constantly screams in the accent.
"🥺I was happy in Shanghai! I had a little house and a garden! My friends were rich; we went to parties all the time in limosines! 😭😫I HATE BEING OUTSIDE!!"
🤦♂️😤SHHHHAAAAADUUUUPPP!!

Kali-ma! ❤️🔥
The mine cart scene is my favorite.
Temple of Doom and Gremlins led to the creation of the PG-13 rating.
I heard about that! Didn't realize Gremlins contributed to it tho. My family and I try to watch Gremlins every Christmas season.
kali ma!!! Another great episode Tony! It was great meeting you in person on Saturday.
I owned the VHS as a kid, so it was Indiana Jones movie. I watched the most so I have the most nostalgia and found memories of it. It’s definitely an underrated and fun movie.
I got to say: Willie is less annoying than Tony when he complains to the others.😂
I have always loved temple of doom and had no idea it was disliked. I have probably seen it the most
I’ve watched Raiders of the Lost Ark several times, and I’ve watched The Last Crusade many, many times. I love Indiana Jones! But Temple of Doom? Not so much, there’s just something too off about it to win my heart. All in all, though, I think the Indy trilogy…yah, im disregarding everything after 1989, I believe the Indy trilogy to be a great film adventure.
Temple of Doom was actually my introduction to the series, it was the very first one I watched. It is still my absolute favorite Indiana Jones film
Temple of Doom really is the best Indy movie. That's the movie I think of whenever I think of Indy.
Willy Scott is the exception to the "annoying, screaming, useless female tagalong" trope, because she's obviously been thrust into an awful position:
She's a gangster's concubine who gets dumped/sacrificed callously (to her face!) after giving this huge performance that was likely the entirety of her narrow focus. Lots of Redlettermedia vibes going on in this episode.
More of it, please.
"When you clicked on the Temple of Doom review did you think we would be talking about riding the Red Sea?"
Well...no...but I honestly wasn't surprised by it.
Anyone know what TH-cam channel Tony’s taking about at 1:01:00?
I'VE ALWAYS SAID THIS. AND IT'S A PREQUEL! NOT A SEQUEL!
I go to Netflix or Prime or Shudder but always end up watching Hack the Movies and Red Letter. Sometimes in my sleep. This is what the people want
Temple of doom is ridiculously underrated.
My favorite Indiana Jones movie is the last crusade
Temple of Doom has Always been my favorite!!
Does anyone know a link to the funny documentary he's talking about?
it's not necessarily a Tom Cruise movie, but Johanna likes interview with the vampire also right?
In the marvel Further Adventures of Indiana Jones, they actually point out that Indy sent Shortround to a boarding school and bankrolls his education
Between this and Fallout, I have never more in my life wanted to learn how to sing "Anything Goes" in Cantonese 😅
It’s the 2nd best one, not better than Raiders but it was always my favorite to watch too
Couldn't agree more, this one is the best Indy movie ever made. Every time I watch it, I can't stop and it's like reading a good book, you just can't put it down. Love it!
Jonathan Quan lived in my city as a kid. My grandma was his T.A. when he was going to school at Monterey Highlands Elementary.
Didn't like it when i was younger. It has grown on me. Would've wanted more Shanghai stuff that was a awesome opening action scene. But I love all of them (including 4). lol kinda excited and not for the new one we will see, hopefully it doesn't suck. hahaha
Johanna, you can trim out a plane to fly straight without control input.
I don't have a favorite at all. Both Raiders and Doom were tied in my book because both genuinely struck fear in me at the age I was. Good to see Tony not only pronounces Mario correctly, but N'arlins as well.
Honestly, my biggest complaint about this movie is that the title card saying “Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom” is behind Willie for some reason.. You can’t even see the word “of” because it’s behind her on screen 🙄
Are you all going to do an episode on Godzilla 1998? Also I recently discovered your channel and have been binge watching your videos! Love it!
I am in the process of reviving my Godzilla podcast. it would most likely be there if we do.

Dude I can't believe I missed this one I never miss these but I will make up for it now
What a great episode. Johanna is lovely! I agree TOD is the best Indy movie!
I never thought it was the best, but I never got why it was the original black sheep of the series.
The only reason I had any dislike of Shortround is just how loud he was half the time. I'm more a fan of his actor as Data in The Goonies, I always wanted the spring loaded wind up teeth he had.

It's my favorite Spielberg film! I'm sure he'd love that.
I haven't seen the movie or a pic of the spider you were talking about....but going off up our description....sounds like a whip spider
I agree with Tony. Temple of Doom IS the best. I watched this one the most as a kid
*Indy is interested in Willy, and tries to hook up with his Willy.*
"😂Stop it, Tony! Stop with the phrasing! 😂You're killing me!"
As a professional electrician, Johanna, your ceiling fan SHOULD be fine......should be

The bugs! Omg! “We.. are going… to DIE!”
If you haven't seen it look up auf and pet with pat roach as one of the stars, hugely connected to my home town Newcastle In the UK
This is one of my favourite movies of all time. Period.
Haven't watched the video yet, curious to see your points, but I do want to say that Temple of Doom IS my favorite Indiana Jones movie, has been since the first time I've watched it
Hack the movies with Tony! YESS!!
I agree temple is clearly the best
Absolutely Loved Temple of Doom! Raiders was always my favorite. But this was the one we saw the most times growing up
Ah, don't worry, Tony, about people hearing you call them stupid for not liking Temple of Doom.
Kali mah!
I mentioned it was a blend of miniatures
They all have their moments but Raiders is the best
2 words “Melting Nazis” 👍👍
16:23 yesssss take over the channel
Definitely my favorite Indiana Jones movie, also 2016 ghost busters is my favorite ghost busters movie
Not better than Raiders of lost Ark but still a good movie. I dont get the hate this movie gets. I have the same issues with it other people do but I don't think it's a bad movie.
I love this movie so much.
I can't say it's the "best" but I'd say it's a 3 way tie between the original 3. I'd give 4 stars to each! (1-3)👍
