Doug, I have to say; this is probably my favorite set of videos yet. I don't know about you, but there's nothing closer to my heart than something from my past that can still be a part of my life; the stories they could tell; the memories that they hold. Thanks for sharing this project with us Doug.
Just a thought…a platform on the split end. Will catch the split wood then you can direct splits into containers vs dropping to ground. Prevents bending over or awkward handling. Could even hinge so can platform can be folded down or a shoot to a container.
@12:35 I was going to comment on the dual exhaust pointing straight out. I was going to recommend using an elbow to point them downward to send the sound down instead out straight out. The original setup would be louder when you would bend over to pick up wood to split. This improvement in design should reduce the noise while using. I see Dough thought of this idea before any suggestions were needed. "Doug the chief problem solver"
25+ year old DougMade splitter. Loving it! It's great that you have someone local to crimp your hose 😏 It's always interesting when you bring your camera with you to the local businesses. Awesome job, Doug! Happy Father's Day! 🥳
Nice job on the modifications. Looking forward to Part 4. When I built my splitter 50 years ago, I used 2 smaller hydraulic cylinders. When I have wood that splits easily, which is most of the time, I can use 1 cylinder and have a faster cycle time. If I have wood that splits harder, I hook up the second cylinder (takes about 1 minute) and have double the power. The return only ever runs with 1 cylinder, so the return speed is always fast. I used quick couplers to supply the 2nd cylinder so that when I want to use both cylinders it is quick to switch. Thanks for the ideas.
Always fun to see you get involved with another project, Doug! This one will continue to evolve until a most satisfactory finish is reached. Great video, thoughtful as always. Stay well, stay safe!
When you said complete reversal, I was thinking of an adjustable mechanism that will kick out the valve lever on the return stroke. With this modification, you can stop the cylinder just beyond the length of the rounds. I'm planning on doing this with my splitter along with a cradle of some sort.
Im so disappointed Doug, one major flaw ive noticed, no one eye customs sticker!! Loving this build great work, looks fantastic so great ideas, just needs a sticker 😅
Yeah, baby,,,that's what we're talkin' about! Shaping up real nice, Douglas. Looking forward to the final touches, particularly that work platform at the wedge. I can safely predict now that when your sons retire and you're in your twilight they will pull out that splitter and use it for their firewood and think, "Gee, dad thanks". I know that because I've thanked my deceased father many, many times for the stuff I got from him that I never thought I would want or need. 🙂
Great video on the restoration of the splitter. I would love to see your thought process on building a splitter from scratch. That would make a great series. Splitters with a textured pad on the ram are always nice so they grip the log. That way the log doesn't slip out under pressure and smack you in the arm.
Great video you should make a table that you could back into that holds the firewood on there and then you don’t need to have it, supported by the splitter, kind of like the table that they have that they have at hard-working man except for just make it a slot that you could drop back this thing into you and you can make the table as big as you want so you don’t have to bend over to pick up all the rounds and pick up all the split firewood
Good! You moved the hitch to the other end. My splitter is set up like this one was. It sucks to operate the splitter without unhooking it from the tow vehicle… which is a huge pain when you’re working out in the woods! You’re pushing wood toward the tailgate and cannot easily put a trailer or wheelbarrow under the production end.
Build a table for it ASAP like you have planned, and also make your engine air diverter removeable. I LOVE standing in the path of the engine’s heated air in the winter months.
Nice job on the splitter so far Doug. One suggestion, I would not remove the plate on top of the head. It is there to contain the cooling air in the fins on the head.
Don't need a heat shield if you only run it in the winter. Having someone wait on you right now instead of in a week or two is something that doesn't happen much anymore. Or we have to order the parts.
Looks like you got a great splitter to start with, you’ve got the skills to turn that thing into something just as good or better than a wolf ridge or eastenmade.
Happy Father’s Day Doug You’ve done an ncredible job displaying all your talents & wisdom. I wondered if you could use a piece of chain link fence beneath the splitter to catch the splits? It could be unhooked and rolled up into a tube when not in use. See you in the next installment.
If you drill the pressure office out just a bit and increase the rpm it will speed it up and no cost, and I know all the experts will say get a bigger pump but try that first that’s no cost, that’s some Australian advise and the reverb is great 👍
Looks good, what would help with the speed?? A faster engine?? Different pump?? Will you loose power making it faster?? Let’s see where you take us next!! Thanks for sharing
Love it. Suggestion. The lock on the trailer hitch may come lose due to vibration. Might want to make hole bigger and put the safety chain hook in it when using it.
Hi Doug, I like the renovation of the old Spliter I have one of those home. I also have a new axis and I like the deflector for your belly that you made. Do you have a design for that that I might purchase?
Nice progress so far Doug. Looks like my first comment got removed?…I tried sharing a video from mighty Mac wood splitter. They have a unique “catch tray” that might work well on your splitter. Hopefully the in series mufflers aren’t creating too much back pressure. Fabing up a tractor muffler with rain cap would work well too. Honestly I’d invest the money in a new ohv engine…smoother, fuel efficient, quieter, no heat deflector needed. Plus low oil warning. Curious to see what you are planning for control valve? Regen or auto cycle?
you probably have already done the tray... but I personally wouldn't make it a tray and just make it a grate have a couple cross members to support some upside down angle iron in the shape of a triangle to grip falling wood... but then you wouldn't have to worry about cleaning out water or debris kind of like this ^^^^^
You really are great at making your tools work best for you!! Do you have a patent on anything? You should!! Great video! God bless you and your family! 👍
Doug, my splitter is very similar to yours and like yours mine is also very slow. Im hoping you will figure a way to speed it up so i can copy you. Please?
Looking good man! Been waiting for this video. Hey, question: why didn’t you powder coat the parts that you used automotive spray paint? Because of the size?
@@OneEyeCustoms you could add a T fitting and mount a pressure gauge. Based on the internal diameter of the piston and the travelling speed you could figure out displacement of the pump and deduce from both the power delivered by the pump. Can be valuable info for designing speed improvements
DOUG, Like the series! Got a question, how would you increase the ram speed to cycle faster? I'm sure raising the RPM's on the engine wont help much. Cause the splitter I have is also slow.
Not much can be done without throwing lots of money at it. That’s one thing I don’t want to do. You can reduce the total stroke to help time per cycle.
@@OneEyeCustoms Yeah, got what you're saying. Ya can keep em alive and working, but to make these Frankenstein's preform like Adams Axis,.... Ain't gonna happen! Thanks for the reply.
It’s hard not to be jealous of your skill, knowledge and experience
Forgot creativity
Thanks, I’m just doing what I know and learning as I go!
He, that sounds like a great new saying!!!
I’m gonna keep that one.
At least he's your always ready to be helpful Neighbor Doug 😉👍 Y'all are perfect neighbors!!

Happy Fathers Day to all. Splitter is looking good and I am sure it will get even better!

I could only wish… lol

Stacking the cuts in that tote nicely looks better not thrown in!! Great job!!! NEATLEY TOTES ARE 100% BETTER!
I totally agree!
Hey Easton Made / Axis, you need to get Doug one of those splitters...
The splitter looks great. When I have hoses made they clean the inside of the hose after cutting it to length. There are metal filings in there.
I did wonder about the speed and table/cradle. I didn’t doubt you solve those with excellence!
God’s Blessing’s,
Curly
I am liking the modifications Doug as I have almost the same splitter I actually put a log lift on mine.
Great renovation of the splitter, Doug. You'll have it so nice that you won't want to use it. Great job!
You put the oil in the tank on my birthday last year.❤
That’s awesome!
Looks great Doug, your attention to detail is always impressive.
Thanks, wait till you see the final episode. 😁
Weld on a hook on the top of the ram . To get rounds unstuck with a chain wrap around the wood.
Happy Father's Day have an awesome day you are doing an awesome job building the wood splitter
Great project Doug. Happy Father's Day!!!
Needs a two speed pump or a regeneration valve. Better yet, BOTH! "Rapid Extend Log Splitter Model LSR3060"

Thanks Neighbor Doug, as usual master craftsmanship at work. Now I’ll tinker with mine👍
Check out Outback Wrap for hose protection.
hi well doug you have done another good job that wood cutter will last a long timeits good enough for what you need it for
Don’t remove the cover it needs to flow over the entire surface. I have the same issue and I’m going to try to deflect the air on the outlet side.

That is awesome Doug. Great looking splitter. Did you consider making a slider over 4 way, just a thought.
Eventually
The splitter is really looking good have you thought about adding a log lift
I have one. Bobcat E60…. Lol
Fenders may just save the rear glass on your truck!! Ask me how I know!!
Never thought of it throwing rocks forward… good idea

Yes, I do not have an oven big enough to powder coat them.
And what kind of rubber did you put down under the oil tank
Nice mods.
Great job, looks great! Curious what power that engine can produce and what pressure the pump can still deliver
I’m still not sure what HP that engine is or what the pump pressure would be.
@@OneEyeCustoms you could add a T fitting and mount a pressure gauge. Based on the internal diameter of the piston and the travelling speed you could figure out displacement of the pump and deduce from both the power delivered by the pump. Can be valuable info for designing speed improvements

Stay tuned for the next video!!!😁
Does your valve have an adjustment to speed up the cylinder!
Love ya work👌

What brand of paint are you using? Looks great!
It is the rustoleum professional brand. The tall can
Just wondered why you left the piece of flat stock on the end of the unit, and how many times have you walked into it
Wasn’t sure if I would use it for something yet.
DOUG, Like the series!
Got a question, how would you increase the ram speed to cycle faster? I'm sure raising the RPM's on the engine wont help much.

Are you going to make the spliiting wedge 4 way so you only have to do one pass?
At some point I will do something like that.
Doug, can you tell me the name of the rust oleum type you put on the splitter. I thought I wrote POR15 but I can’t find it. Please advise. Thanks.
I used POR15 on the round rails and rustoleum professional on the rest of it.
Thanks Doug.
10:01 Is the fuel filter in backwards?
Nope, there is a big arrow on it.
I would make it at least a 4 way
You need to figure out a graphic... At the end of the video, have a final picture. And then a graphic of a rubber stamp that says, "Dougified".
Doug what do you do for a living ?
Retired tool maker, fabricator and engineer.
More solutions coming?? 😅😅✔️✔️
