We used to have a splitter like that. Cut a special chunk of fire wood for the front and backed the wheels up on car ramps until we redid the whole splitter .
Can't wait to see the end result . My dad built a splitter 45 years ago. Motor blew up, hydraulic tank leaked, he gave it to me. Friend gave me an engine,got a hydraulic tank off a 1960s combine. I figure I have 130$ into it. Splits wood like it should. Way better than store bought.
Really looking forward to this one Doug, the whole way through i was hoping for at least a fresh coat of paint and a one eye customs sticker. The main downside i see is any log you split is essentially sitting in grease on the beam before being split. Some way of turning the hydraulics vertically would be awesome. Please also fix the wheel bearing, it would annoy me knowing it was faulty😅 i would also have a rain cover like you put on Adams, think of his mods which made it more user friendly

Years ago, I built a splitter that had a table attached to the ram that went out past the knife! Really worked well when doing big rounds as nothing fell on the ground & the pieces came back on the return stroke!
Love projects like this, Doug! Taking old relics (particularly ones that have been in the family forever) and totally refurbishing them. The splitter is perfect for your needs. I am not offering any advice because, to this point, you did everything exactly the way I would have done them. You don't need a smartass giving their 2 cents. I'm hoping you make that thing look like new when you're done with fresh paint all around and everything. That's what you usually do. Looking forward to Part 2!

Nice project Doug. Couple suggestions.. 1) unbolt engine, open garage door, toss engine into woods. Replace with a clone engine. 2) if you’re not going to up size engine or pump, replace splitter valve with a regenerative valve. Or auto cycle valve. As slow as that is an auto cycle would let you take bathroom breaks. I’d say up size engine, pump and auto cycle valve and be done with it. 3) probably already planning this but if not raise it up. 4) build catch pan.
In the next video, can you talk about what, if anything, could be done to improve the splitter ram speed? I’m interested to hear what you would say about that.
After you get done with modifications on this one, I would build a new one from scratch. Would be a great series showcasing a lot of your talents. Very ambitious project, but give it some thought.
Time to hits the parts catalogs for a higher flow hydraulic pump and bigger engine. You've got some work ahead of you to get the cycle time closer to that of the Axis.

Those little engines have been around for a long time. Maybe a touch better than B&S brand. A table off the sides of the wedge to catch split pieces. So you don't have to pick up off the ground. A staging table opposite operator You can load smaller rounds by hand. Use Your skid steer for a log lift like John Clark does @ Fricknjeep.
I've seen videos of people putty box blades on to make squares. Also, a 4 way splitter blade to drop on. Even have seen one where as the cylinder retracts, a table comes up to lift splits back up to the splitting area.
I would ditch the motor, flip it upside down. And modify it to be used on the skidsteer for slitting big rounds 🙂👍. But if it has memories from the past attached to it. Then maybe not 🙂.
My uncle gave me a 2 inch water pump with briggs 5 horsepower on it and for the life of me I cannot get spark out of it ! My son and I have tried everything but I am to the point now that I am just going to get a hobo freight predator engine we have one on a log splitter and it runs awesome with probably 50 cords of wood through it over 5 year . The funny part is I don't need a 2 inch pump I am just determined to make that thing pump water lol
Converting this to a Vertical Splitter would be the best thing you could do with this, other than re-powering this with anything other than a TECUMSEH!

My grandfather had a splitter that he started, but died before it was finished. My dad got it in the estate sale. 20 or so years ago I finished it, and I don't regret setting it to a good working height. There are things I would do differently now that I did back then simply because I had very little to spend on it. A couple of years ago I added a lift to the side of it. I was always planning on it, but never really needed it until a couple of years ago. As we often say "I should have done that years ago". I don't see any reason why you couldn't add a lift to yours as well. Let me know if you'd like help with a design!
Hi Doug, I am not sure if you were able to identify the engine? I assume all the engine tags are missing? If they were there your Tecumseh contact should be able to help you figure out the HP. I would think there should be a s/n stamped into the block. If that can’t be found maybe they can tell you the HP by the carburetor part number you purchased. I send to be in parts for Cummins/Onan engines, gensets etc. Just my 2¢ worth. See you in the next installment.
Splitter mods, repairs, and builds seem to be in the air around our region. Save some time on the 24th for my event if you're so inclined. Also, I just replaced the Tecumseh (snowblower version with no air filter) on my push-through splitter that I bought off a guy whonwas towing it to Andover at a gas station, with a Predator 212. I'm not a fan of the country of origin, but the $99.00 sale price caused me to sin. That splitter had/has a ton of issues, but the push-through design w/table has been worth the frustration. I'm looking forward to your mods. I might have a request on a "One Eye Custom" mod for one of my projects if you're game.

There's a mod I keep meaning to make to my 25T rail splitter that I've seen others do. It'll split anything up to 26" long, but everything I split is 16". The mod basically causes the ram to stop at a selected point on the return stroke by kicking the control lever to neutral so you you're not wasting time by having the ram return to the full retracted position. Set it for 18" so you can still drop a log in without any trouble, but not have that extra 16" of travel time. This makes the cycle time about 30% shorter.

Doug looks like a 3.5 HP Tecumseh engine. Add a slip over 4way splitter. Replace hydraulic filter.

I pull the splitter I use onto car ramps and jack up the front it’s at waist height for me and it works better for me less bending over

Change filters on both oil. Raise it up. Paint it. Bigger tires. For off road.

They make replacement kill switches that connect to the bolt closest to spark plug.
Somewhere on the engine there should be the model number stamped in a metal piece.

I am wondering, what PM mill do you have and how do you feel about it? I am looking to get one for a room that has 87" clearance to the ceiling.

I would not buy it again for one reason only… no lock on the motor for tool changes. It sucks the way it has to be done.
