MrSafeguy69 ***** What the hell are you guys talking about? It's hugo boss, the guy who joined the nazi party and sponsored the Schutzstaffel when his business collapsed. HE PERSONALLY designed the uniform without question. He kept a photo of him with Hitler. He used labour camps to staff his company. What are you even denying here? It was 100% him personally, and his company.
Nazi propaganda glorified the death of "martyrs" and the skull on the uniform was supposed to symbolize the SS's willingness to look death in the face and march on anyway. Well, that's what they believed anyway.
To anybody that came here, the skull design was originally used by a number of elite German horse cavalry regiments (long before WW2), the Death Head's or "Totenkopf" regiments, and then later by some militia Friekorps units during the interwar period between WW1 and WW2. The SS appropriated the design to look cool/historical, and probably because some of their older members had been Friekorps veterans. So it isn't new, just misused.
Specifically, Hussar regiments of Prussia under Frederick the great. Given that Hitler and Himmler both were pretty massive Frederick fan-boys (though not so much of Prussia), it makes sense they'd try to ape one of its most renowned symbols.
@@Ruosteinenknight Yes, I always thought it was a dick-move on the Nazi's part, given their dislike of the Juncker officer class, though visually it is looks very cool with the grey/black Hugo Boss uniforms.
You know I once got into an argument with a Neo-Nazi and had almost this exact argument play out. It was intentional on my part, of course, but the Nazi was legitimately trying to argue that the skull doesn't make them the baddies, because it's like a Totenkopf skull that goes back to the Second Reich or something. And meanwhile I'm just line-for-line quoting this back at him to everything he says. Good times.
0:58 For those asking themselves the same question, in this context, it (Totenkopf) basically symbolized the SS's strong defiance of death, disregard for their own imminent peril, and will to die while fighting. It followed the Nazi Party's overall tendency to glamorize death and sacrifice in battle, which, in this case, resulted in high casualty rates among SS divisions throughout the war, despite their elite status.
This sculls are from the time much longer ago, as Germany was still in many little parts with different armies sometimes fighting against each other. This scull means that this soldiers do not make prisoners. They kill or die. Basically a unit which is rushing through the enemy lines and create a free path for the other units.
@@micropower8 Yes, the scope of my comment was strictly limited to the Nazi regime and its SS Divisions in WW2. Of course, I think you might be perhaps referring to the Black Brunswickers, from the Duchy of Brunswick, especially during the Napoleonic wars, or perhaps to the Prussian Hussars, but correct me if I'm wrong. Regarding that earlier interpretation of the Totenkopf you mentioned, I haven't gotten much knowledge of it apart from some instances among SS Divisions, and I'd appreciate it if you provided me with some references. Either way, thanks for adding to my comment ;)
@@arthurrubents - Yes, I had the "Black Hussars" from 1742-1892 im my mind. I can not add a link, so I add a quote here: "At first they were only called "black hussars" because of their uniform. They had their name after their strange clothing, the black Dolman with the white cords. On the hat they also wore the sign of bravery without fear of death: the skull." For me this was very strange as I saw this, but there is a historical reason. They did need this type of soldiers for special operations. If the soldiers take care of the wounded or want to give up, then the losses in the unit would be sometimes much higher or even 100%. So this soldiers are very ... they do not care about their comrades, they push through. This does not sounds nice, but this ruthless military tactic is working and it is reducing losses in this special situations. But in other situations this way of thinking would increase the losses.
@@micropower8 Oh yes, the Black Hussars. Thanks for adding the quote. That's interesting, I wasn't aware of their unique approach to their own battlefield casualties. Thanks for sharing this info, I'll make sure to look further into it.
Funfact: The British Army Royal Lancers use a skull in their batch as does the Royal Air Force No100 Squadron and the US Marine Corps Reconnaissance Battaillion. ☠😁
The Death Head on the SS caps didn't have anything to do with their enemies. It represented that they would serve until death, so it's more symbolic of their own skull.
Not in the SS (as this supposed to be a division of). You didn't get into the SS unless you were a completely fantastical and irredeemable scumbag. I can assure you this conversation would never have taken place in real life. In the German army (wehrmacht) sure, especially after they eh... "lent a hand" to the SS divisions.
Fun fact, members of the German Wehrmacht weren't allowed to be Nazi party members, which became increasingly difficult to regulate once replacements were needed.
@@andrewwalsh1417 Because that is how British comedy is done in all the TV studios, it comes from the culture of theatre!!! It aids both the actors during the performance and generates atmosphere for the viewer at home with audience feedback like in stand up comedy. You can get tickets to see any of the productions at the studios. Even filming outside of a studio an audience watches that section on monitor but it does incentivise sticking to the studio. Editing can mean different multiple takes and audience audio sections on different takes or masking inappropriate moments but it's not "canned laughter". It has become less fashionable now due to the move towards more intimate (monologue driven which requires additional editing) and immersive "mockumentary" style comedy in last couple of decades.
The strong focus on the “skull” in many comments falls short in my opinion. It worked very simple an universal as prop for the punchline. The actual object of the "comic" absurdity is the tentatively emerging doubt in the face of the well-known atrocities.
Well, Saint Jerome was believed to have kept a skull on his desk, to remind him of his own mortality. It's not the cheeriest imagery; in fact, it's almost as grotesque as you can get, but it has its uses.

The skull insignia was in fact supposed to represent the soldier's willingness to readily sacrifice his life for his country/cause/leader. It has actually been used by several elite guard units throughout history, for example in the Ottoman Empire. So it wasn't meant to be intimidating, as much as to show the SS's special devotion and esprit de corps/self-image, in the spirit of other historical guard units. I find that pretty interesting, because it puts into perspective the willingness of the SS and the individual soldiers, to execute sometimes near-suicidal missions and to readily accept their often huge losses, all while still maintaining high morale (when a regular army unit's morale would likely break).
My Kuperjanov's Infantry Battalion also had skull and crossbones as their symbol, made us feel quite special as the symbol was used already in 1918, even my great grandfather fought with that emblem in the Estonian War of Independence. One of the officers said that when he went to the US, he had to remove it after the first day, because he got too many questions and bad remarks though ;)

Seriously, just on the face of it, applauding someone who fought the Russians in WWII is outrageous. Maybe they could be excused if they applauded a war hero who they didn't know which war he was veteran of, and which side he was on. But they literally announced it to the parliament before the applause. It's like they really have no idea they are the baddies.

Hugo Boss didn't design the uniforms ffs, they like many other WW2 German companies were forced into mass production of whatever they were told to
MrSafeguy69 ***** What the hell are you guys talking about? It's hugo boss, the guy who joined the nazi party and sponsored the Schutzstaffel when his business collapsed. HE PERSONALLY designed the uniform without question. He kept a photo of him with Hitler. He used labour camps to staff his company. What are you even denying here? It was 100% him personally, and his company.
You just know this conversation must have come up at some point...
Nazi propaganda glorified the death of "martyrs" and the skull on the uniform was supposed to symbolize the SS's willingness to look death in the face and march on anyway. Well, that's what they believed anyway.
Pure piece of art.
Just an absolutely perfect sketch, in concept and execution.

Brilliant. Never gets old.
Sounds like something the baddies would say
On the hat they also wore the sign of bravery without fear of death: the skull."
For me this was very strange as I saw this, but there is a historical reason.
At times, ruthless conditions call for ruthless measures, I suppose, albeit always accompanied by considerable risks, as you rightly pointed out.

And considering the fact that most of these want humanity dead or enslaved for simply existing, see humans as food, or see humans as something to kill for fun, I wouldn't consider the Imperium that bad for being ultra religious space N@zis when they kind of need to in order to survive.
As for fighting other humans? You do realize that many countries have put down rebellions or attempts to join other nations or succeed and gain independence, right? And have done bad things to the people rebelling, right? And let's not forget about the threat from Chaos.
