    the "he's a catcher now" reminded me of football/soccer player casemiro who won many titles for real madrid. when he first tried out in sao paulo the scout asked the kids "who plays striker? who plays number 10?" and a bunch of hands were raised up, that's what everyone wanted to play. but when he asked who played defensive midfielder and no one raised their hand casemiro saw the opportunity and said "i do", despite also wanting to play an offensive position and having never played DM before. great vid

    Great video. I lived through this as Mike was my catcher and teammate in 89, 90 and first half of 92 in San Antonio. He and I had some really funny conversations in winter workouts at Dodger Stadium.. He's actually a funny guy. The reason he left the team midway through 1990 from my recollection was he was not happy with our Manager Joe Alvarez (many were not) and his playing time splitting with our other catcher Pete Gonzales. It was pretty incredible watching his meteoric rise after the 1990 season. The guy worked his butt off...period. Many late days after practice in Vero. HOF was well deserved for Mike

    Piazza played 137 of his 141 games as a catcher in 1997, while Joe Torre played only 90 of his 161 games as a catcher in 1970 when got more hits than Mike.

    Great video. Seth Lugo hasn’t had nearly the career Piazza did, of course. But he’s another pretty crazy outlier. He had an unremarkable career at the D3 college level at Centenary, and was drafted in the 34th round. Nothing would have suggested he’d become a reliable MLB starter one day, and now he’s signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Royals to secure generational wealth.
    He never gave up, and battled through a bunch of injuries to get his chance with the Mets, and he made the most of it. Happy for him.

    Grew up a huge Dodger fan and always felt that letting Piazza go was the biggest blunder in Dodgers history. Everyone knew his story about the draft, his dad, Lasorda, etc., and the fans absolutely adored him. He was the ultimate underdog and was a huge draw. I remember it being over money, of course, with the Dodgers ultimately signing veteran pitcher Kevin Brown to a then record-setting 10 year/$100M+ deal instead of agreeing to a similar contract with Piazza. Terrible optics and a huge buzz kill for Dodger fans at the time.

    • @haraldgriefbacon1373
      @haraldgriefbacon1373 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      One of the top three. The Dodgers had Roberto Clemente and lost him to the Pirates in the Rule 5 Draft. And they traded Pedro Martinez to the Expos for Delino DeShields. The Yordan Alvarez trade (for Josh Fields) isn't looking too good either.
      Piazza, Clemente, Martinez, any of them might have qualified as the greatest Dodger (by WAR) in history, if the team had had the sense to keep them

    • @Zippy994
      @Zippy994 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Those are huge on a pure baseball level, for sure. But for me letting Piazza go was just so demoralizing. Not only was he arguably the premier hitting catcher at the time, his story was just so compelling it transcended baseball. I guess I don't really know why, but I never really got over it (LOL). I just remember being so stunned when word spread he was gone. Guess it's time to just let it go. 😉

    • @haraldgriefbacon1373
      @haraldgriefbacon1373 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Zippy994 I understand. Clemente and Martinez weren't superstars when the Dodgers lost them. Piazza did have such a great story. I remember how angry I was when they were forced to trade him because the fools who ran the Dodgers at the time (Fox Entertainment) decided to go public with the negotiations, in a misguided attempt to gain public sympathy. It was pathetic.
      P.S.: A friend reminded me that the Dodgers also let Adrian Beltre go. For nothing.
      It's never been easy being a Dodger fan.

    7:15 was a ball measured at 496 but went considerably further than the ball Stanton hit that went 504. It cleared the bleachers in the deepest part of the park and cleared by a good distance. I think it was closer to 510 feet. The longest home run I've seen in a game at coors

As for throwing out base stealers ... much of that had to do with this pitchers never helping hold guys on. And he wroekd for and earned everything he got once in the majors.

    If Teddy Ballgame says you can hit, well, then you can hit. The man forgot more about hitting than most people knew. If he hadn't lost 4+ years (most during his prime) to military service imagine what his career numbers might have been. Williams missed all of the 1943-45 seasons and missed most of the 1952 and 1953 seasons as well. Add in another 145 HR's, 500 rbi, and 800 hits (less than he was averaging per season at that time) and he might have finished with 666 HR, 2339 rbi, and 3454 hits. Those numbers would have made him 6th All Time in HR's, 1st in rbi, and 7th in hits.

      A lot of people say that he wasn't a great defensive catcher. He the % of players he'd catch stealing is 8% less than average over his career. However, recent sentiment has shifted a little bit. With all these advanced metrics, people are starting to think that Piazza wasn't as much of a defensive liability as people thought. SBNation did a great article explaining how Piazza might actually be a good defensive catcher. It's worth a read.

    Given his sudden change in performance, I wonder if there was something else involved like steroids. Although I know nothing about him, but how could a person change so suddenly in just a year?

    I wonder what he changed in the return to home after being convinced to return that led to such an increase in offense. Had to be more than suspected steroids.

    Ungrateful. He went into the Hall as a Met because he didn’t get a contract he wanted before his first contract was up. He wouldn’t even be playing baseball if it hadn’t been for Lasorda and the Dodgers.

    That's why I hate pitch com. Now catchers don't have to pitch sequence and call a game for a pitcher. Taking a huge element out of the game, it hurts my heart
